10 Things You Need To Know Before Buying A Costco Cake
As a result of Costco’s free samples and dirt-cheap wine stealing the show, the big-box store’s sheet cakes get lost in the mix. But if you look a little closer, you’ll see a group of buyers who are completely smitten with the cakes available for purchase in the bakery aisle. Here’s what you need to know before you decide to become one of the groupies.
1. They’re insanely cheap.
Ordering a half-sheet cake from Costco will cost you less than 20 dollars—$18.99, to be exact. You’d be hard pressed to find a better deal even if you built it yourself. It also outperforms the competition: BJ’s Wholesale Club, another big-box retailer, sells a similar-sized cake for $24, while Walmart’s cake costs almost $25.
- Costco removed them from their shelves in 2020, therefore you may have to ask for them or place an order ahead of time if you want them.
2. Costco cakes feed so many people.
You can feed 48 people with only one of Costco’s half-sheet cakes. That implies that once the cuts are done and the pieces are distributed, you will have spent just 39 cents per person.
3. One Costco cake weighs more than a newborn.
If you were to put your half-sheet cake on a scale, it would weigh around nine and a half pounds, according to the manufacturer. According to the order sheet from Costco, two of those pounds are the mousse filling for the cake.
4. There are only two flavors offered.
You have the option of ordering either a white cake (often known as vanilla cake) or a chocolate cake from Costco. The first is a vanilla sheet cake filled with vanilla cheesecake mousse and frosted with white buttercream. The second is a chocolate sheet cake filled with chocolate cheesecake mousse and decorated with chocolate buttercream.
- The latter is a chocolate rendition of the former, consisting of a chocolate sheet cake, chocolate mousse filling, and chocolate buttercream frosting.
5. Customers used to have more options.
When I was younger, you could get a carrot cake sheet cake from Costco that was filled with apricot mousse and iced with cream cheese frosting that had slivered almonds on top. If you travel outside of the United States, you can find even more options. For example, Costco Australia offers you to combine a raspberry filling with either chocolate or vanilla sponge cake.
6. You can take a Costco cake home on the spot.
Costco’s bakery department is always stocked with ready-made sheet cakes, some of which are plain, some of which are decorated with birthday greetings, and others which are decorated with festive patterns during the holidays.
7. But custom orders require advance planning.
Give bakers a day or two notice if you want them to create anything unique for you, such as an elaborate pattern or a personalized message.
8. Bakers can decorate in more than two dozen ways.
There are over 30 different designs to pick from on the sheet cake order form. While there are the traditional methods to frost sheets cakes—with balloons or flowers—there are also some more unusual options like a pirate ship, skateboard, or a party owl…whatever that means in this context.
9. The dinosaur design was part of a scandal.
According to The Inquisitr, a lady complained that the dinosaur on her child’s birthday cake had only three legs, each of which looked like the number ″6.″ The article was published in 2015.She said that the bakers had placed the satanic ″666″ message in the cake on purpose to deceive people.Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the article in question had been authored by the mother in issue’s boyfriend, and the Costco store at the core of the story acknowledged that no complaints had ever been received.
10. They’re the perfect blank slate.
Costco’s sheet cakes might appear to be quite plain no matter how you cut them, which has led to a slew of at-home bakers creating their own variations. You may get a cake that has simply been frosted with a base layer and then decorate it at home to your liking.Sarah Weinberg is a writer and editor based in New York City.

One imaginative couple chose to forego a more expensive alternative in favor of creating their own tiered treat out of sheet cakes from Costco and fresh flowers from Trader Joe’s, which turned out beautifully. Two simple sheet cakes were divided into smaller pieces and layered on top of each other to obtain the classic wedding cake form, for a total cost of $50 — a genuinely sweet deal — and were used to create the masterpiece. The couple was fortunate in that they had a pastry chef in their family who aided them in icing the cake with rich layers of handmade buttercream and placing the pale pink flowers in a cascade down the side of the cake. Her sister posted a photo of the finished result on Instagram, complimenting her brother’s ingenuity and skill and admitting that she had designed and constructed the stunning but inexpensive rustic cake stand.
One Costco sheet cake’s design stirred up a scandal
In 2015, a Costco issue erupted after a woman complained that her son’s dinosaur-themed birthday cake had Satanic connotations, prompting the company to investigate. As reported by the Inquisitr (via Snopes), the woman who ordered the cake was likely lured to it because of the friendly-looking blue and green dinosaur frolicking across grass that had been created in icing on the surface of the cake. Her son’s birthday was approaching, and she was singing ″Happy Birthday″ to him when she saw that the dinosaur’s three visible legs appeared to be in the pattern of ″666,″ a number sequence usually linked with the devil.A satanic sign was written clearly as day on the birthday cake of the mother’s kid, who is six years old.
- ″I was quite astonished and horrified,″ the woman adds.
- ″What was originally intended to be a humorous dinosaur turned into something really revolting.
- For Costco to allow such an insensitive joke to be sold to an unknowing customer took my breath away.″ Despite the fact that the accusations have now been discredited and that the woman and her boyfriend (a reporter) are believed to have engineered the controversy, there were precisely 666 Costco shops dispersed around the world at the time of the crisis.
- Oooh, that’s creepy!

Despite the fact that Costco offers an almost limitless number of customization options, the retailer’s cakes are only available in two flavors: white cake filled with vanilla cheesecake mousse and topped with vanilla buttercream frosting, or chocolate cake filled with chocolate mousse and topped with chocolate buttercream frosting.Costco has dramatically reduced the number of cake varieties that are offered in recent years.Previously, in the United States, Costco’s carrot cake sheet cake, which was filled with apricot mousse and topped with cream cheese frosting and almonds, was a popular item among its customers. If you go outside of the United States, Costco provides an even more remarkable range, with warehouses in Australia allowing consumers the chance to mix and combine different varieties of cake to create their own unique flavors.
- Customers continue to laud the quality, freshness, and taste of Costco cakes, making them a popular choice for celebrations such as birthdays, graduation parties, and even weddings, despite the restricted flavor selection.
How Much Is a Costco Cake?
When it comes to bespoke cakes, Costco has some of the most reasonably priced alternatives available on the market right now.If you get a half sheet from Costco, you’ll pay just $18.99 for enough food to feed 48 people, which works out to around 39 cents per person per meal.Costco’s cakes are substantially less expensive than those sold at other grocery shops, such as Walmart, Whole Foods, and Kroger, among others. The same basic half sheet cake at Walmart will cost you $30, but the same basic half sheet cake at Kroger costs $35.
- Whole Foods’ famed berry Chantilly cake, on the other hand, would set you back $90 for a half sheet, which is on the higher end of the price spectrum.
- Despite the fact that you’ll almost certainly wind up spending a few extra dollars for customisation, Costco’s pricing remain unbeatable.
- A personalized cake from a high-end bakery may easily cost twice or three times as much as a Costco cake, and even a tiny four-inch cake from your local bakeshop would likely wind up costing you a few dollars more than a Costco cake in most cases.
- My kid just celebrated his fifth birthday!?
- Additionally, we purchased a birthday sheet cake from Costco…
- the one that serves ″48 people.″ Despite the fact that we did not throw a birthday party, we did purchase a ″48 people cake″ for FOUR people….

What Size Is a Costco Cake?
However, despite the fact that Costco promotes a sheet cake, their cakes are actually half sheet cakes, measuring 12 inches by 16 inches.Half sheet cakes can feed around 48 people, which means you’ll be able to cut your cake into 48 squares of two inches in height and width.Even if you’re looking for something smaller, buying at your local Costco bakery can help you save money on your grocery bill overall. The bakery area of Costco also sells readymade cakes, brownies, cookies, and a variety of other bakery items, in addition to half sheet cakes and other baked goods.

- Many people enjoy Costco cakes because of their high quality and freshness, and many at-home bakers have experimented with modifying the cakes they buy at Costco.
- If you’re interested in creating your own personalized cake, Costco’s bakery offers ready-made sheet cakes that have just been frosted with a base layer of buttercream, making them the ideal canvas for creating your own design.

Can You Freeze a Costco Cake?
In the days leading up to your big event, you may freeze a Costco cake to keep it fresh.Cakes from Costco are conventional layer cakes that may be frozen and re-defrosted for usage at a later date. However, if you freeze buttercream frosting for a lengthy amount of time, the consistency of the frosting may be affected. You should not have any problems freezing your Costco cake because the company keeps their cakes frozen before putting them on display.
- Transfer your cake to the freezer as soon as you get it home in order to maintain the stiffness of the icing for the finest results.
- If you have enough space in your freezer, you may put your cake in a box to prevent it from being crushed.
- If you’re looking for a certain design and are unable to locate it on the cake display in your bakery, you may ask a member of the Costco bakery crew to check the freezer at the rear of the store.
- For those who are purchasing a cake on the same day that they intend to consume it, bear in mind that you will need to set aside a few hours for the cake to thaw if it was purchased frozen in advance.
When it comes to quality, freshness, and price, Costco’s cakes outperform the offerings of most grocery shops and even small neighborhood bakeries.Whether you’re interested in sampling Costco’s famous sheet cake or making plans for your next special event, contact your local Costco bakery to learn more about the cake varieties, customization possibilities, and how to place an order at your store. If you’re interested in learning more about buying at Costco, have a look at the linked articles listed beneath this section.Articles that are related: Learn all you need to know about Costco membership here.

Baked goods for less
With multiple unique departments (and even a beloved food court), Costco might appear to be several different stores in one, which is understandable given its size and scope. Its apparel department has one vibe, its book table another, and its whirling circles of discount rotisserie chickens yet another. Its book table has a different atmosphere than its clothing section. One place that Costco customers can’t get enough of is the bakery, which is stocked with delectable treats.

Save dough…buy dough!

Buying frozen goods will save you money
You may purchase frozen baked products in the same way that you can purchase pre-cooked baked goods.Tasia Duske, CEO of Museum Hack, explains that ″for many of Costco’s bakery goods, the retailer sells both fresh and frozen versions of the item.″ ″Frozen versions are less expensive and have a longer shelf life than fresh counterparts.″ As a rough example, you might be able to purchase a box of freshly baked cookies for around $0.35 per cookie.″The identical cookies, frozen, may be purchased for as low as $0.19 per cookie.″ According to Duske, the reason for the pricing difference is that frozen foods are more stable and can be purchased in larger quantities.Learn about several items that you should avoid purchasing in large quantities.

Moreover, even if you purchase fresh foods, do not be scared to freeze them.As TeamBuilding CEO Michael Alexis points out, ″a lot of baked goods don’t freeze well,″ but ″Costco’s baked goods do.″ ″Do you want to make a couple of dozen huge muffins and freeze them?″ Go ahead and do it.What happened to that box of croissants?Check.
- Costco understands that you are purchasing in bulk, and as a result, they manufacture items that may be frozen to extend their shelf life.
- And, perhaps most crucially, even after being thawed, these items keep their shape, form, and flavor.″ 5 out of 8 Photograph by Patrick Strattner/Getty Images
You can return unfinished goods
Do you have any leftover cake?According to Wanana, Costco will accept it back.Reader’s Digest quoted her as saying, ″Costco has a very generous return policy, and they typically take back anything their customers bring in for return.″ In no way should you be that person who returns the leftover cakes since you weren’t able to consume all of them during a party. You should not feel horrible about returning them to Costco and getting your money back if you have a good cause.″ (Please keep in mind that Costco has changed their return policy for COVID-19.
- Their website, on the other hand, does not expressly address returning baked products.) Returning a cake that has been partially consumed would most likely fall under the category of unpleasant behaviors that Costco customers should avoid.

The sheet cakes might be coming back
Costco stated at the end of June 2020 that they will be discontinuing its famous half-sheet cakes. The explanations they provided were ambiguous at best; they stated that COVID-19 had caused them to ″decrease service in several departments.″ Instead, they advertised their ten-inch round cakes, but customers were dissatisfied with the company’s decision to discontinue production of the iconic rectangular cakes. However, it wasn’t until the end of July that consumers began to discover that sheet cake order terminals were once again available in stores.Stores in Santa Clara and San Jose, California, specifically, sell them; one was even noticed by an NBC reporter while on assignment.
- Costco issued a statement on July 22 indicating that the cakes had not been restocked, presumably in reaction to this report.
- (It was essentially the same statement they gave when they first announced the cakes’ withdrawal; it did not expressly mention to the cakes’ apparent resurrection.) It remains to be seen if the cakes will be able to reopen their doors.

11 Types of Cakes to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
A sponge cake known as genoise is popular in Italy and France; in genoise, whole eggs are beaten with sugar until they’re thick and ribbony, and then flour (and sometimes butter) is added and the batter is baked; the result is delicious baked in a round cake pan and simply frosted, but genoise is also pliable enough to be baked in a jelly-roll pan and rolled up into a roulade. The flavor of genoise is not very forceful, but it is frequently employed in the construction of layered or rolled cakes when a lighter texture than that of a butter cake is needed.Genoise cake layers are always wet with a flavored syrup to enhance taste and moisture, and they are frequently cut into thin horizontal slices and layered with rich fillings such as buttercream to add structure and texture.European-style layer cakes, which are popular in coffeehouses throughout Europe, are distinguished from American-style butter layer cakes, which have fewer and thicker layers and are more commonly seen in bakeries in the United States.
5. Biscuit Cake
Baking biscuit cakes (also known as bees-kwee) is similar to making genoise in that both egg whites and egg yolks are used, but instead of whipping them together as in the case of genoise, they are beaten separately and then folded back together. This results in a light batter that is drier than a genoise, but which keeps its shape better once it has been thoroughly mixed. In order to do this, it’s frequently utilized to create piped forms such as ladyfingers. When cooked in a tube pan, similar to that of an angel food cake, it produces a highly chewy sponge cake that was fashionable in the early twentieth century but has since fallen out of fashion.
- However, it is still referred to be the original Passover sponge cake in a slightly modified version, in which the flour is substituted with matzoh cake meal and potato starch.
Costco Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake Review
Costco’s Christmas fruit cake is almost as nice as the one that Grandma used to bake every year for Christmas!Today I’m going to be reviewing the Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake from Costco! At my parent’s house during the Christmas season, this is a must-have dish on the menu.My father is the only person I know who enjoys fruit cake as much as he does.
- The Kirkland Signature Pumpkin Pie, the Kirkland Signature Red Velvet Cheesecake, the Kirkland Signature Nanaimo Bars, and the Kirkland Signature Ginger Cookies are some of the other Christmas goodies available at Costco this season.
Location in Store
The Costco Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake may be found in the bakery department of your local Costco store. It is not kept in a refrigerator. There is a part number for this item: 13585.
I’m not a big fan of fruit cake, but the Costco Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake isn’t too bad for what it is.It’s quite moist, and it’s crammed with glazed fruit and almonds to make it even more delicious. There isn’t much of the cake itself to be found in each piece because every bite is packed with either fruit, almonds, or both.My father thinks that this is the finest store-bought fruit cake he’s ever eaten, and he’s had a lot of them over the years.
- It has a moderately spicy flavor and is classified as a ″medium″ fruit cake, which means it does not include a significant amount of molasses.
- Because of the glazed fruits, currants, and raisins, it has a sweet flavor, but it is not sickeningly sweet.
- The flavor of this cake is similar to that of a fruit cake, which I believe you would appreciate.
In all, I spent $15.99 for the 1.6-kilogram Kirkland Signature Christmas Fruit Cake from Costco. The fruit cake is really substantial and densely packed! A little goes a long way in this world.
Purchasing a Christmas fruit cake rather than creating one from scratch is a more convenient option.Alternatively, you may marinate your fruit cake by pouring your favorite liquor over the top, wrapping it in cheesecloth, and placing it in the refrigerator for several days.In addition to being delicious frozen, the
