    In the meanwhile, it’s still difficult when people balk at my rates or decide not to purchase from me because they believe I’m too pricey (especially local people in my tiny town).But, to be really honest, I’m still turning down 3-5 orders every week since I’m completely booked!(PS: The vast majority of my customers, perhaps 90 percent or more, travel more than 30 miles to purchase my cakes.

    I, like everyone else, require compensation for the time I devote to my job.People who wish to pay $.50 (or less) per serving must travel to a grocery store and get a low-cost cake in which the icing is scooped out of a 5 gallon bucket and the sheet cake is baked hundreds of miles away and delivered frozen.Although I have purchased and consumed my fair share of Walmart cakes, I do not hold it in contempt – it is nothing to be sneezed at – this is not what I do!

    A bespoke cake that needs me to take away hours and hours of my time from my family is not going to be affordable, especially if they want it delivered.Period.Your reputation of being cheap is something you don’t want, and you have to make it worthwhile for YOU to do it or you’ll burn out and stop.I do, of course, make allowances for family and friends in special circumstances.I frequently offer them a discount, but I seldom do them for free, unless they are members of my direct family, in which case they may still be responsible for the cost of the materials.

    How did I come to my ″per serving″ price?

    • On the basis of three considerations, I developed my price list: Consider how much other area bakers/bakeries are charging for similar services. Call them and see if you can work anything out. We have to charge less at home from time to time, but not by much. Bakeries incur additional expenses such as paying for their facility, additional utility bills, commercial equipment, and maybe compensating other employees, among other things. You, on the other hand, want to be competitive. In this case, you should charge $3-3.50 per serving if they charge $4, rather than you charging $1 per serving if they charge $4
    • this will cover the cost of your materials and other expenditures. You’ll need to put in some effort and do some arithmetic, but you’ll need to know how much your cakes are costing you. Costs for ingredients (break them down per serving), cake boards, tape, boxes (for deliveries), business cards (and even energy) should all be added up (if possible, check your previous bills and see if there was an increase after you started caking). All of these considerations are important
    • your time. This is critically crucial! As a homeschooling mother of six children, I must place a high value on my time.
