Introduction: MInecraft Sword – From Fondant
This is my first effort at this, and sure, I made a mistake – which I corrected – but I’ll show you both the nice portions and the not so good sections so you can design your own version of it.Eventually, this will be used as the decoration on the top of a Minecraft birthday cake for my grandson.I’ve also included a short slideshow tutorial video at the conclusion of the post.I’m still in the process of creating these movies for my job, so if you have any recommendations for a complete beginner, I would much appreciate it.However, please be courteous (″,)
Step 1: I Used
- Renshaw Flower and Modelling Paste (see note below) in the following colors: Black

After a few minutes, I realized that, while the sizes of the geometric cutters were ideal for the cake decorating, they were considerably too large for the fondant sword. To get them to the size I wanted (about 8mm square), I did the following: cut them using the largest square cutter
- cut that square into quarters with the smallest cutter
- Cut this square into quarters, using the smallest cutter you have available
Thus, I was able to obtain the size I need. Allow for a few minutes of drying time.
Step 4: Cut Sufficient Squares
- Here’s what I used on one of the sides: Black was cut 58 times
- Pale Blue was cut 20 times
- Dark Blue was cut 16 times
- Brown was cut four times.
- Don’t forget to make a few extra pieces just in case
Step 5: Do a ‘dummy Run’
I laid down each little square according to the ‘plan’ that I had been given and then conducted a ‘dummy run’ with all of the small squares to make sure everything was in place. I measured the length of the sword from pommel to tip and it was less than 10 inches, which was perfect because that is how big the cake will be when I bake it.
Step 6: Prepare the ‘canvas’ and Start Gluing
Having determined the length and breadth of the guard, I rolled out the black fondant paste using the thicker guide on my rolling pin in order to fit the size I had determined before. It was around 10 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 2mm thick. After that, I glued them on using clear piping gel in the same sequence that I had placed them during my dummy run.
Step 7: Cut the Outline
I used a craft knife to carve off the contour of the form after it had been put down. To finish off the sword, I used a small paintbrush to apply piping gel between each of the squares and then all over the rest of it.
Step 8: Allow to Dry
Allow for overnight drying. Turn the piece over and continue the process on the other side until it is entirely dry. This is entirely optional. Ensure that it has dried fully before placing it on top of the cake.

- Step 6: Trim the tops of the cake layers to make them as flat as possible. Place 1 layer on a serving plate and set aside. Spread jam on top of the first layer, then cover with the second. Spread the chocolate buttercream frosting over the top and sides of the cake, saving about 2 tablespoons of the frosting for the top and sides.
- Step 7Cut a piece of marzipan the size of a golf ball and set it aside. Add the red food coloring and knead the dough until the color is uniformly dispersed throughout.
- Fill a level work surface with confectioners’ sugar and roll out the remaining marzipan that has not been colored. To decorate the top of the cake, cut out a 9-inch square and gently place it on top of the cake.
- Step 9Roll the marzipan trimmings into a log and cut them into four 9×1-1/2-inch strips. Each strip should have three rectangular notches cut at one edge. Strips should be pressed onto the edges of the cake with the notches facing down
- gently press the top of the cake and the strips of marzipan together to glue them.

- Red marzipan should be rolled out and cut into squares of varied sizes. Using a small amount of the remaining frosting on the back of each square, use it to adhere the squares together on top of the cake in a random Minecraft design.
