How To Start A Successful Cake Business
Are you interested in starting your own cake business? Founder and owner of Strawberry Lane Cake Company, Ella Harvey, offers her advice on how to manage a successful baking business in this blog posting. Here are some of the most important things she suggests for anyone who is beginning a cake business:
1. Register with your local council
Participate in a food safety training session. These courses can be completed online, and in certain cases, they are provided free of charge by local governments.
2. Practice, practice, practice
Continue to push yourself to learn new abilities and to ensure that you have the appropriate skill set. Friends and family members are the finest individuals to test your cakes on, and they are also excellent at spreading the news about your new cake company enterprise.
3. Develop a niche
- Make a decision on the types of cakes you want to specialize in, whether it’s cupcakes, celebration cakes, wedding cakes, or something else entirely.
- Identifying a niche will assist you in refining the identity of your firm’s brand and selecting the most appropriate name to distinguish your company from competitors.
- Consider what distinguishes your company from other businesses in your industry.
4. Research the industry and your market
This is necessary for determining things such as how much to charge for your cakes and what cake flavors to provide, among other things. The fact that you can visit a plethora of cake shops and consume copious amounts of cake without feeling guilty because it’s all in the interest of’market research’ adds to the enjoyment of the experience.
5. Get some good recipes behind you

DECIDE ON THE TYPES OF CAKE YOU WANT TO SELL AS A HOME BAKER
- How to establish a bakery company from the comfort of your own home in India?
- You must begin with a piece of cake!
- When beginning your home baking company, you may want to consider starting with a simple variety of vanilla and chocolate cupcakes and gradually extending the range as your business grows in popularity.
- A home baker is capable of creating any form of cake, even those that are beyond our imagination.
- But you don’t have to be an expert at everything – some bakers specialize in specific areas such as selling cupcakes from home or baking gluten-free cupcakes, while others are known for their stunning wedding cakes.
- The concept is straightforward.
- Determine your own personal strengths and seek to improve them.
- Being distinctive is the key to success, therefore provide something that makes you stand out from the crowd and helps you achieve your goals.
GO TO A PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOP OR CLASS
- A large number of home bakers begin by watching YouTube videos and learning by trial and error.
- However, if you want to start a business as a home-based baker and serve actual clients, it is advised that you take professional workshops or seminars from recognized academies or established top bakers or cake artists.

GET THE REQUIRED FSSAI REGISTRATION FOR A HOME BAKER
- The Food and Safety Standards Authority of India demands that each tiny business person working with food, regardless of whether or not they generate more than Rs.
- 12 lakh per annum from the business, register their firm with the agency.
- This registration is therefore required for everyone who begins a home baking business, regardless of whether the firm is operated from home.
- You may believe that the FSSAI registration is not essential unless you are running a large food business with many people under you, and that it is thus not anything to be concerned about when you are just starting out in the food sector.
- However, make sure to register your business so that you do not run into any difficulties in the future.
- The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) can impose substantial fines if you operate a business without registering.
- Please see our post on ″FSSAI Registration & Licensing for a Home Baker – Everything You Need To Know″ for additional information on the FSSAI registration and license process.
- For those of you who are interested in applying for one, we may submit an application on your behalf.
- To register, please visit this page.
OTHER BUSINESS REGISTRATIONS
- Consider registering your brand name and logo with the U.S.
- Patent and Trademark Office.
- It is not required, but it becomes important as your company grows in size and complexity.
- When it comes to protecting your brand, it is always beneficial to do so so that no one else may use your name to scam clients.
- While it may not be particularly beneficial in the beginning of your job, it is something to keep in mind as your career advances.
- Obtaining a trademark registration is not a simple process; it is recommended that you visit an IPR or Trademark attorney to complete the process.
- GST Registration – We are all aware that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is levied on a variety of goods and services that we purchase.
- However, have you ever questioned if you are required to pay GST to the government as a person who sells items – such as cakes – to the general public?
- If your company has a large turnover of employees year after year, you may be accountable.
- Most states have a GST exemption threshold of Rs.
- 40 lakh, which is applicable in most cases.
- As a result, if your annual income does not exceed Rs.
- 40 lakh, you are exempt from paying GST.
- If you are in a special state – which includes all seven north-eastern states as well as Uttrakhand, as well as Union Territories such as Ladakh – you will not be charged.
- If your yearly revenue exceeds Rs.
- 20 lakh, you will be required to pay Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Because there aren’t many bakers who attain this amount of turnover right away, you won’t have to be concerned about it right away.
REGISTERING YOUR BUSINESS
- Because most home bakers start their businesses on their own, they don’t normally consider about incorporating their firm.
- There are a few instances in which you should seriously consider registering your company with the government.
- If you are doing your business with another person as a partner – whether it is a friend or a family – you should register as an LLP to protect your legal rights.
- This is not required, but it will help to guarantee that you are not duped by your companion (s).
- It will also ensure that your business is carried on by your children or other heirs in the event that you decide to retire or become unable to work any longer.
- It is quite beneficial to protect your hard work by obtaining this registration.
- Registration is not required if you are a sole proprietor or otherwise operate independently.
- You might want to explore incorporating as a one-person business.
- However, if you are working on a lesser scale, the compliance requirements that must be met every quarter are not worth it.
- Registration as a private limited liability company is also superfluous because you are the only person participating in the firm and so it is not required.
GET YOUR RECIPES RIGHT
- As the center of attention, cakes are often ordered from home bakers so that they may be customized to the customer’s specifications….
- As a result, selecting the most appropriate cake recipe is critical to the success of your home baking enterprise.
- Try out your recipes on your family and friends to see how they turn out.
- Solicit their candid opinion so that you may make any required adjustments before launching your campaign.
- It is necessary to repeat this process until your cakes are the finest they can be and become the most delectable cakes you have ever eaten.
- This will be the most important factor in building a profitable and long-lasting home baking enterprise.
- When selecting a basic cake recipe, look for one that is straightforward and has been tried and tested.
- To get you started, here are a few cake ideas to get you started:
- The following are examples of baked goods: plain cupcakes with various frosting variants, flavored cakes, wedding and celebration cakes, themed birthday cakes, tray-bakes, and bars
SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS
- It is critical to verify that you are purchasing high-quality ingredients at the lowest feasible price.
- In India, internet businesses provide extremely competitive costs for basic supplies like as flour, sugar, and even flavorings such as vanilla and almond.
- However, some baking-specific products such as cocoa powder, sprinkles, and butter paper are frequently more affordable at local baking supply stores.
- If you are a healthy baker, organic shops are the greatest place to get your supplies because they offer pure products and frequently work directly with farmers.
- For special bargains on Baking Raw Materials, keep an eye out on this page.
THE WEAPONS- KITCHEN EQUIPMENT
To begin selling baked products, you’ll need to invest in the proper equipment. The likelihood is that you already have the majority of the equipment you’ll need to start a part-time baking company if you enjoy baking enough to do it as a hobby. Nonetheless, there are a few items that you may need to acquire. Here are our top ten must-haves for every cake decorator or baker:
- A high-quality electric food mixer
- nonstick cake pans (enough to bake at least two batches of cakes)
- digital scales for precise measuring
- cooling racks
- measuring spoons
- mixing bowls
- wooden spoons
- rubber spatula for easy handling of cake batter and frosting
- cake cases
- and a decent oven.
- Stock control for a home-based cake company does not have to be a time-consuming procedure requiring several hours of effort.
- Essentially, you only need to make sure that your supplies aren’t out of date and that you keep precise records of all of your purchases and purchases.
- Most bakers who work from home will be able to get by with a basic spreadsheet, but if your business starts to develop, you may want to consider investing in a simple stock management system to keep track of everything.
COSTING AND PRICING – AN ISSUE FOR MANY A HOME BAKER
- In order to gain experience and clientele, many people price their cakes significantly lower when they first begin selling their goods.
- The problem is that you will become recognized for offering lower-priced cakes, and as a result, your clientele will be unwilling to spend more when the time comes to order more expensive desserts.
- No matter how much experience you have in baking, you should always respect your time and work.
- One of the most difficult challenges that both new and seasoned bakers confront is determining the appropriate price for a cake.
- The cost of a simple recipe that people use is three times the cost of the ingredients that are utilized.
- Despite the fact that this is a general guideline that is utilized, it is not the greatest.
- You must account for these expenses, but you must also consider the worth of your time and expertise.
- You must make certain that your firm generates a profit before moving further.
- HomeBakers.co.in has developed a comprehensive Baker’s Pricing Calculator, which has been evaluated and certified by Ms Ashwini Sarabhai, who is considered to be one of India’s Top Cake Artists by Cake Masters.
- It is offered in two formats: Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets versions.
- Both versions are available for purchase from us for the low price of 500.
- If you’re interested, simply click on the ″Buy Now″ button.
- The issue of delivery is one that most home bakers have to deal with.
- The majority of bakers deliver their cakes personally or arrange for their customers to pick them up at their place of business.
- Some people have resorted to using cabs to deliver their packages.
- Some of them have also experimented with different delivery services.
- Delivery, on the other hand, appears to be a persistent issue for many.
- One piece of advice is to always do what is most comfortable for you.
- Many bakeries only provide pickup or even delivery as an option, and they are not flexible.
- It all depends on what is most convenient for you at the time.
- If you don’t have the time or resources to personally deliver the cakes, pick-up is an excellent alternative.
- It’s best to employ delivery if you don’t want clients to show up at your house during the day and disrupt your routine, or if you are concerned that a client will not know how to properly handle a complicated cake and will cause harm to the confection.
SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
- It is really important to make a good first impression.
- The Cake’s look and flavor will aid you in making a good first impression on your guests.
- If you are fortunate enough to get one pleased customer, you will likely gain many more.
- A delighted consumer is key in this field, which lives on word-of-mouth marketing, which, aside from the internet, is the most important form of promotion for most businesses.
- Facebook is the most popular social media platform among home bakers, followed closely by Instagram and Twitter.
- Many home bakers engage in some additional marketing activities.
- Some bakers sell their products by sending out mailers to a customer list that has been created over time, while others set up stalls in schools, apartments, flea markets, and other public places to promote their products.
- Overall, the marketing may look to be quite shabby, yet it is really effective.
- We collaborate with a number of home bakers around India to ensure that our customers receive the precise cake they desire!

WEBSITE AND PHOTOGRAPHY
- Some well-established home bakers are taking their businesses to the next level by establishing websites for their businesses to sell their products online.
- Once you have received a sufficient number of orders and people are searching for your page on social media, you should consider blocking your domain name.
- Create a website as soon as possible and concentrate on posting high-quality photographs.
- When it comes to selling baked goods, photographs are the most effective method.
- The cakes created by home bakers are typically shared on prominent social media platforms, such as Facebook, or they are uploaded on their own Facebook accounts.
- Many home bakers take their own photos of their creations, which is rather common.
- Some have honed their skills in photography over time, while others have had family members and friends assist them in their endeavors.
- Another significant part of this is the branding of the organization.
- Always make sure that your orders are sent out with your business card attached.
- Make sure to personalize your boxes and other packaging so that your logo and brand name are easily distinguishable.
- This produces a lasting impact on individuals, increasing the likelihood that they will remember your brand and refer you to others.
- To be effective, digital marketing necessitates the acquisition of knowledge and expertise.
- Even if you create it over time, it will consume a significant amount of your time and energy that may be better spent creating additional cakes.
- HomeBakers.co.in provides digital marketing services specifically for home bakers for as little as 5000 per month, depending on the package.
- If you’re interested, please send an email to [email protected] expressing your interest.
UPDATE YOUR SKILLS CONSTANTLY – NEVER STOP LEARNING
- For any home baker, keeping up with the latest trends is essential, as is continuing to learn.
- Observing films on YouTube or participating in workshops and classes are two ways to do this.
- However, be sure that you are regularly updating your knowledge and abilities.
- Clients are up to date on the latest fashions, and fashion is the focus of the firm.
- If you don’t know how to manufacture an item that customers desire, it will impede the growth of your company.
- You should reach out to an event planner or a wedding planner who is familiar with your social network for assistance.
- You will always receive their orders for every event they plan, whether it is a 100-person birthday party or a 1000-person wedding.
- Reaching out to local businesses such as supermarkets and other grocery stores, or even bakeries that do not produce their own goods, and offering to sell them a specific dish on a daily or weekly basis depending on their requirements, is another effective way to get your business off the ground and growing.
- This will ensure that you have a consistent source of revenue and will assist you in carving out a niche.
- The ideal method to start taking custom orders is to inform your friends and relatives that you are accepting orders and to post about it on social media sites.
- Involve your own network in spreading the news, and use this to your advantage to retain customers.
- Always make sure that you have a social media profile dedicated to your baked goods, whether it’s on Facebook or Instagram, to showcase your work.
- Potential clients will be able to examine examples of your prior work in this manner.
- On the 27th of July, Anjana Lath and Akhileshwari Anand Raj published an update on their work.

- Best of all, we’ve provided a 10-step basic decorating lesson complete with images to guide you through each stage of the process.
- Much work goes into decorating a dessert, and this is done long before the icing even gets close to your dessert.
- Let’s start with a list of the primary materials you’ll require.
- I realize it appears to be self-evident.
- However, you may find yourself forgetting one or two things!
Round Up Those Ingredients
First and foremost, you must determine which delectable dessert elements you will use into your edible tower design. When planning a birthday cake, there are four major components to consider: the cake, the icing, the filling, and the decorations.
Cake: The Star of the Show
- ‘This is the centerpiece of your meal,’ says the prima donna.
- There are a plethora of alternatives available for you to pick from, many of which are based on personal preferences such as taste, dietary restrictions, and color combinations.
- To start with classic tastes, consider one of our basic recipes, such as chocolate cake or vanilla butter cake, which are both delicious options.
- These tastes really work nicely together, and you can even put one of them on top of another.
- Get the recipe for Gluten-Free, Lactose-Free Mandarin Orange Sponge Cake right away.
- Are you looking for a delectable gluten-free dessert to serve?
- We are likely to have something suitable for you!
- Make a tasty basis for your dessert with this 2-ingredient cake.
- Alternatively, try our orange-flavored basic sponge, which is also lactose-free.
Frosting: Ice, Ice, Baby!
- The icing, of course, is my favorite part. When I was a youngster, I used to lick the frosting straight off a cupcake and toss the remainder in the trash. Despite the fact that my finicky palette has now developed, I still believe that icing is quite important. And you should do the same! Non-stop enjoyment of any dessert is ensured by the use of this ingredient, which is also responsible for preserving the freshness of sweets. This is due to the fact that it fully surrounds the cake, creating a barrier that prevents air exposure, maintaining moisture and prolonging the keeping quality of your cake. The phrases ″icing″ and ″frosting″ are interchangeable and can be used to refer to the same thing. Whatever you choose to name it, there are a plethora of possibilities from which to pick. Buttercreams, glazes, whipped cream, and other sweet coatings are all options for customizing your sweet coating. If you’re anything like me and a sucker for frosting, we’ve compiled a list of homemade recipes that you should certainly try: Cakes with American-Style Buttercream, Swiss Meringue Buttercream, Chocolate Ganache Glaze, Cocoa Fudge Frosting, Paleo Coconut Whipped Cream, and Super Easy Spiced Glaze
- Cakes with American-Style Buttercream, Swiss Meringue Buttercream, Chocolate Ganache Glaze, Cocoa Fudge Frosting, Paleo Coconut Whipped Cream, and Super Easy Spiced Glaze
- You may use either of the original buttercream recipes, which are both flavored with vanilla extract, to make the buttercreams for the cupcakes.
- If you wish to add any food coloring to your dessert to make it more personalized, it is preferable to start with one of the vanilla buttercreams as a neutral foundation in order to achieve the brightest colors.
- If you want a different taste than vanilla, you may use one of the recommended variants to create a range of flavors like as chocolate, citrus, and many more.
- Everything is up to you, chef.
Filling: Fill ‘Er Up!
- While you may keep things simple by using your frosting as a filler between the layers, try experimenting with different tastes and textures for an interesting blend of flavors.
- Lemon curd works well as a filler between layers of cake, adding a hint of tasty brightness, bitterness, and tang to the cake.
- Consider putting jams and jellies in the center for a sweet, fruity filling as an alternative.
- Chocolate ganache is a luscious and rich dessert.
- Use cooled ganache as a filling and adorn the rest of the cake with buttercream icing for a subtle touch of decadence.
- If you are using more liquidy fillings, such as jams and curds, I recommend piping a small border of frosting around the edge of the cake first – this creates a barrier to prevent the filling from oozing out and keeps the outer appearance of the dessert looking clean and neat.
- If you are using more solid fillings, such as pudding, I recommend piping a small border of frosting around the edge of the cake first – this creates a barrier to prevent the filling
Decorations: The Finishing Touches
- What you want for the final touches, so to speak, is the cherry on top of the cake.
- Do you want to keep things contemporary and minimal?
- Displaying your dessert with simply the icing on top and no additional decorations or borders may make a clean and modern design statement.
- The use of top and bottom borders helps to make the display more comprehensive.
- Consider Restaurant Eve’s Birthday Cake as a source of inspiration!
- Detailed instructions on how to make piping borders may be found in the tutorial below.
- Sprinkles such as rainbow sprinkles or chocolate jimmies are timeless favorites that will never go out of style.
- Making your own handmade sprinkles with royal icing is possible using a decorating technique known as the transfer method.
- Using the transfer method, you pipe little dots or lines of royal icing onto parchment paper and let them to dry until set.
- Play around with this transfer method by piping different designs with royal icing.
- For example, piping rosettes if you want embellishments that are feminine and delicate is a good way to experiment.
- However, if you want to add a little additional zing to your dessert, utilize garnishes that match or enhance the tastes of the completed product.
- For example, sprinkling fresh fruit on top of a cake adds a splash of color while also counteracting the richness of the frosting.
- Chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and ganache may be enhanced with chopped chocolate to bring out the chocolatey deliciousness of the cake.
- Alternatively, handmade maraschino cherries might be used to decorate a vanilla confection, a Black Forest cake, or a Chocolate Mole Cake.
- In the spring and summer, candied flowers may be used as a delicate and exquisite garnish on a variety of dishes.
Get Ahead with the Proper Tools
- The quality of a cake is only as excellent as the instruments that were used to create it! Please have a look at our list of essential tools that you will need to have on hand. In a separate assessment, we go into further depth on some of these points and issues. These are some examples: The following items are required: Turntable, cake board, offset spatula or metal bench scraper, spoons, serrated bread knife or cake leveler, extra bowls, washcloths or paper towels. The following items are optional:
Now that you have all of the necessary materials, let’s talk about how your cakes should be prepared before they are decorated!
Prepping Your Cake
As soon as you’ve gathered all of your equipment and supplies, it’s time to go to work on prepping your baked bases for decorating. Continue reading below to learn about all of the important information that you should keep in mind.
- It is really tempting to begin decorating as soon as your baked goods have been removed from the oven.
- Here’s my recommendation: don’t do it.
- Before you begin decorating, you must allow the cakes to cool fully before proceeding.
- This is due to the fact that the final texture and crumb are still forming while the cookies cool down.
- And perhaps most crucially, all of the heat from your baked goods must be released before you apply any toppings.
- After all, icing is a combination of butter and sugar, two components that are extremely flammable when heated.
- When applied to a hot dessert, the icing that you spent so much time and effort creating will become melted and runny.
- Waiting for your cakes to cool completely will help you avoid a hot, gloopy, melting sloppy disaster.
Cut the Top for a Flat Surface
- To ensure that your finished dessert has exactly equal and angled edges, there is one step that must be completed long before you frost your dessert: leveling the surface of your dessert.
- Take a look at the cake rounds you’ve made.
- If the tops are curved and have a small hump or mound, it is extremely required to chop the tops off the bottoms.
- Despite the fact that I failed shop class in middle school, I understand that it is far easier to construct a building from a flat surface than it is from a rounded one.
- With all of those beautiful perfect angles, your end product will appear cleaner, neater, and more professionally created from a visual sense.
- To create this flawless pastry plateau, gently cut off the rounded section of the top with a serrated knife or cake leveler, ensuring that the surface is as flat as possible.
- Slowly cut around the entire circle – especially if you are using a serrated knife – to ensure that you are cutting an equal line throughout.
- Following a gentle brushing away of any crumbs, your layers are ready for embellishment!
10-Step Decorating Tutorial Time!
- There is one crucial step that must be completed well before you frost your dessert in order to have a final dish that has flawlessly uniform and angled edges: Consider the cake circles that you’ve made.
- Whenever the tops are curved and have a small hump or mound, it is very required to chop the tops off.
- My shop class in middle school may have been a complete failure, but I have learned that it is far easier to build off of a flat structure than it is to construct off of a curved structure.
- Because of all of those beautiful straight angles, your end product will appear cleaner, neater, and more professionally created from a visual sense.
- To create this flawless pastry plateau, gently cut off the rounded section of the top with a serrated knife or cake leveler, ensuring that the surface is flat.
- Slowly cut around the entire circle – especially if you are using a serrated knife – to ensure that you are cutting an equal line all the way around.
- Following a gentle brushing away of any crumbs, your layers are ready for embellishment.
Step 1 – Prep the Turntable
- Check to see that the turntable is spinning smoothly.
- It is possible that you may need to make adjustments.
- Read on to learn how to fix common problems with both metal and plastic turntables.
- Spraying WD-40 or lubricating with oil the area where the top wheel joins to the bottom stationary base of a metal turntable tends to loosen the wheel and allow it to move more smoothly.
- When it comes to plastic turntables, they frequently come with a lock switch that many people (including me) fail to unlock before decorating.
- Place a tiny, moist washcloth or paper towel on top of the turntable to protect the surface against scratches.
- The washcloth prevents the board from shifting while you are decorating it by rotating the turntable while holding it.
- Place a cake board of proper size on top of the cake.
Step 2 – Apply The First Cake Layer
- On top of the cake board, place a cake round that has been prepared.
- Check to see that it is centered on the board.
- Using this method, apply a little quantity of frosting in the center of the board and then arrange the bottom cake layer on top.
- While you are decorating the board, the icing serves as a cement to keep the decorations from sliding about.
- Cake that is securely fastened makes it much easier to decorate later on.
Step 3 – Apply The Filling
Place a generous dollop of the filling or frosting of your choice in the center of the first layer of the cake. Increase the amount of filling if you like a thicker coating. Spread the mixture evenly with an offset spatula until it extends a few millimeters beyond the edges of the pie shell.
Step 4 – Apply The Second Cake Layer
Place the other cake round that has been made on top of the filling. Align it with the bottom layer, ensuring sure that the sides of the two layers are parallel. Gently push down on the top layer to ensure that it is uniformly imprinted onto the filling.
Step 5 – Apply The Crumb Coating
- The crumb coating is a thin layer of frosting that is put before the top layer of icing is spread to the cake.
- It works as a barrier, sealing and enclosing any crumbs that may have gotten through.
- Using this method, the top layer of frosting is protected from mingling with the crumbs (those pesky rascals!).
- The result is a flawless top coating of frosting.
- This is exactly how we want it!
- Place a dollop of frosting on the top of the cake and spread it around evenly.
- Spread the frosting evenly in a thin layer with an offset spatula, rotating the spatula as you press the icing towards the edges of the cake.
- If extra frosting is required, start with a little quantity on one side of the cake and carefully spread it all the way around, adding more icing as needed.
- First, scrape your spatula over the surface of your primary frosting container, removing any excess frosting that may have crumbs on to it.
- Next, scrape your spatula across the surface of a smaller bowl that is separate from your main frosting receptacle.
- Continue to distribute it along the sides of the cake until it is completely covered in a thin coating, rotating the cake as you go.
- Do not exert too much pressure.
- The cake below may still be visible, but a thin layer of frosting will have been applied to conceal the cake beneath it.
- Allow about 20 minutes of refrigeration time to allow the crumb coating to set.
Step 6 – Apply The Top Layer of Icing
- Place a bigger dollop of frosting over the top layer of the chilled cake, using the same technique that you used to apply the crumb coating.
- Spread the mixture evenly and thickly across the top of the cake with an offset spatula until it is fully coated.
- As you push the extra icing towards the borders, use the turntable to rotate it around.
- Make an indentation on the sides of the cake and carefully spread the frosting all the way around the cake, adding extra icing if necessary.
- Continue to apply it over the edges of the turntable until it is entirely covered in a thick, uniform coating, rotating the turntable as you go.
Step 7 – Fix the Edges and Smooth the Sides
- The edge of the cake, where the top meets the side, will have some extra, uneven icing around it to give it a more finished appearance.
- However, there is a solution to this problem.
- Lightly press down and push the frosting towards the center of the cake with the edge of an offset spatula or a metal bench scraper, mixing the extra icing into the remainder of the icing mixture.
- Dip your offset spatula in hot water and wipe it around the top and sides of the cake to obtain a cleaner top layer.
- To finish, gently run the spatula over the edges and top of the cake.
- When the metal is heated, it will gently melt the icing on top of the cake, giving it a smoother surface look.
- With a moist cloth, wipe away any extra ice that has accumulated on the board.
Step 8 – Pipe the Borders
- Fill a pastry bag halfway with frosting and seal the bag with a pastry tip of your choice.
- Placing the end of the tip at a 45° angle where the bottom of the cake meets the board will create a decorative border at the bottom of the cake.
- Pipe out the proper form by gently pressing down on the bag for a brief period of time and releasing the pressure as you take the bag away.
- This technique should be repeated in order to form a bottom border, with the turntable spinning while you continue to pipe.
- To embellish the top border, position the end of the tip close to the edge of the top border, at a little angle less than 90° from the edge of the border.
- Once again, apply gentle pressure to the bag in small bursts and pipe out the appropriate form, releasing pressure as you take the bag away.
- Repeat the technique for the top of the turntable in the same manner as you did for the bottom.
Step 9 – Add Garnishes
- In the event that you desire to garnish your dish as a last finishing touch, I recommend putting your garnishes into a separate bowl and decorating with your fingers or a spoon after they’ve been cooled.
- Instead of accidently spilling the entire jar of sprinkles on top of the cake, this method provides you greater control over the outcome.
- Before putting the final dessert in the refrigerator, decorate it with the toppings of your choice.
- If the icing is allowed to cool completely before garnishing, it will become too stiff for the ornaments to adhere.
Step 10 – Serve and Store
- If you intend to serve your cake on the same day that you decorate it, you may keep it out at room temperature in a covered container.
- A decorated cake is ideally served at room temperature so that the frosting and cake have a chance to soften to the most pleasant temperature and consistency for the recipient.
- If you want to serve it within a week, store it in the refrigerator in a covered container.
- Allow 30 minutes for the dish to come to room temperature before serving.
- Of course, I wouldn’t hold it against you if you ate it right away…
