Stop Calling This Dessert Monstrosity A ‘Piecaken’

Piecaken. You’ve probably heard something about it.You’ve seen the photos, right? It’s something you’re afraid of.You’re looking for it.

One – or multiple – pie crusts are cooked together to form a cake, and the Internet can’t seem to get enough of it this year. However, there is one major flaw in the design of the piecaken: its name. The title is a homage to the ″turducken,″ a Thanksgiving feast that is notoriously upsetting since it consists of a chicken stuffed inside a duck stuffed inside a turkey, among other things.A syllable from each of the birds who have given their life for the feast is used in the creation of the term ″turducken.″ Tur is short for turkey, duck is short for duck, and en is short for chicken. This is very simple information, yet it appears to have escaped the notice of whoever developed the name ″piecaken.″ The only two ingredients in this recipe are pie and cake. What does the ″n″ in the word piecaken stand for?

  • Except if this cake and pie mixture is going to be baked inside a bird, the name doesn’t make any sense at all.
  • That’s presumably why comedian Charles Phoenix, who created a cherry, pumpkin, and apple pie version of his creation last year and named it the ″cherpumple,″ came up with the name.
  • UPDATE: November 26, 2015: Recently, it has been brought to our notice that this type of dessert has traditionally been known by the name of ″pake,″ which makes much more sense.

Forget Turducken. It’s Piecaken Time. (Published 2015)

Food|Forget about the Turducken. It’s Piecaken Time once again. What exactly is piecaken, you might wonder? It seems like something out of a bizarre Thanksgiving fever dream, but it’s actually a real thing: three different varieties of pie crammed inside a cake.As a result, social media has unintentionally anointed it as the next big thing on Thanksgiving dessert tables, a location that is normally designated for the just-the-basics trio of pumpkin, apple, and pecan pie.

In underground dessert-eating circles, piecaken has been around for years, but a Thanksgiving-inspired recipe developed by the pastries chefs of the David Burke Fabrick in New York has been making the rounds on the daytime talk show circuit this week.In this spiced poundcake, pecan pie and pumpkin pie layers are sandwiched together and topped with an upside-down apple pie.The cake is smothered in cinnamon buttercream and bordered with an oat struessel.Take a look at this monstrosity.Zac Young, the executive pastry chef at the David Burke Group, said on Wednesday that he and Fabrick’s pastry chef, Gian Martinez, came up with the recipe four months ago and tested it out. They wished to take the concept of ″dessert turducken″ to a new level.

  • The company has been producing around 100 piecakens each day at a cost of $49 per piecaken.
  • ″It all sticks together because of the miracle of butter,″ he explained of his eight-pound masterpiece, which took him approximately seven hours to put together.
  • Mr.
  • Young isn’t going to talk about how many calories are in a slice, although some approximate estimates using internet calorie counters put it at over 1,200 calories per slice.
  • Rather than dwell on it, Mr.

Young suggested that it be ″put away in the Thanksgiving calorie box and not thought about again.″ The piecaken is a dish that is not restricted by any culinary restrictions. It can manifest itself in a variety of ways.On social media, people have been praising piecaken in all of its magnificent forms, including: A chocolate-covered cake overflowing with apple pie filling, topped with Oreos, and coated with buttercream. It should be noted that Piecaken is not actually a pioneer; rather, it is a meal that continues the long American tradition of stuffing food items inside other edible items for the pure gluttonous pleasure of it.You might be familiar with turkducken, who was piecaken’s paternal grandpa. That is a meal with a shady background, whose creator (whoever he or she may have been) is widely considered to have been the first person to master the technique of food stacking.

Over the years, writers for The New York Times have characterized it in a variety of ways — ″place them one within the other like Russian dolls,″ was one particularly effective illustration supplied in 2002.″A boneless chicken is placed in a boneless duck, and the duck is placed in a boneless turkey, and then you stuff the entire thing, which is insane.″ ″It’s also excellent,″ Sam Sifton, the current food editor of The New York Times, told an inquisitive reader in 2009.Nothing else has come close to reaching the cultural reputation that the turkducken has achieved.

Perhaps up until this point.Mr.Sifton appeared to be dubious.

How to Make a PieCaken

Photograph courtesy of Goldbelly.com Do you want to take on a new challenge? You may try your hand at making a handmade PieCaken. Begin by selecting your favorite pie recipes, such as pecan pie, pumpkin pie, and homemade spice cake. Aside from that, you’ll need three 8-inch springform pans, which will make it easier to remove the pies and cake from the pans in neat layers.

Step 1: Make the pies

Press pie dough into the bottom and up the sides of two springform pans, covering the bottom and approximately two inches up the edges of the pans.Using an inch of pecan pie filling in one, and an inch of pumpkin pie filling in the other, make a sandwich.Bake the pies until the contents are set and the crust is golden brown, about 30 minutes more.Once the pies have cooled, cut the edges of the crusts down to be even with the tops of the pies.Place both pies in the refrigerator to chill.

Step 2: Make the cake

Bake the spice cake in the third springform pan after pouring the batter into it. Once the final cake has been allowed to cool completely, cut a horizontal slice across it to create a layer approximately 1-12 inches high. Allow the cake to cool.

Step 3: Make the frosting

Make a buttercream frosting similar to this one and add 1-2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon to the top of the cake. To make a three-layer cake, make enough cinnamon buttercream to cover the entire cake.

Step 4: Assemble the cake

Place the cooled pecan pie on a cake board and cover with a half-inch layer of cinnamon buttercream to finish off the top.Refrigerate it for 30 minutes.(Chilling the layers helps to make them more solid for stacking.) After that, set the pumpkin pie on top of the cake and cover it with a half-inch of cinnamon buttercream to finish it off.Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes before serving. After that, arrange the spice cake layer on top of the other layers and cover it with a half-inch layer of cinnamon buttercream.

Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes before serving.

Step 5: Decorate

The leftover cinnamon buttercream should be used to carefully frost the top and sides of the entire cake.Decorate the top edge of the cake with a few ornamental flourishes of icing.Add a dollop of prepared apple pie filling (or chopped apples mixed with a little sugar and cinnamon) to the top of the cake for the finishing touch.Refrigerate your homemade PieCaken for at least an hour before serving.Allow for about an hour for your homemade PieCaken to get to room temperature before slicing and serving.

I tried the PieCaken, a 6-pound cake stuffed with 3 pies, and it was worth the $99 I paid for it

  • The PieCaken is a delicacy that combines pecan pie, pumpkin pie, spice cake, and apple pie filling into a single serving.
  • When I had it for the first time, I couldn’t believe how exquisite each layer was
  • it was like eating a cake.
  • The PieCaken was a hit at my Friendsgiving
  • everyone raved about it.

Pumpkin pie was never big with my family, so I’ve always been open to trying new desserts on Thanksgiving.

My Thanksgiving dinners are always concluded with a slice of my father’s legendary baklava or an apple pie from his bakery. And, while I enjoy pumpkin pie just as much as the next person, I’ve never understood why it’s always the most popular Christmas dessert on the table. In the end, when I heard about the PieCaken – a 6-pound cake filled with four different desserts — I knew I had to give it a shot.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first saw a photo of the PieCaken.

After the birth of her children, Kelly Ripa described the Thanksgiving dessert — which can still be ordered for $99 on Goldbelly and shipped across the United States — as the ″best thing that happened to me.″ There’s a layer of pecan pie in the bottom, followed by a layer of pumpkin pie, and then a layer of spice cake on top. There’s also apple pie filling in the center, and everything is kept together with cinnamon buttercream, if that’s not enough.

But before I tell you how the PieCaken tastes, let me give you a quick history lesson.

Founder and chief pastry chef Zac Young came up with the concept for PieCaken while working as the executive pastry chef at David Burke Fabrick in New York City in 2015.While the restaurant’s senior chef was preparing the Turducken (chicken stuffed into a duck stuffed into a turkey), Young had the idea to create a sweet version of the dish.According to the PieCaken website, Young was only hoping to develop a dessert that he could sell by the slice at his restaurant. However, as soon as he shared a snapshot of the PieCaken on Instagram, the PieCaken took off.Six years later, the PieCaken is still a big favorite with customers.

Is the buzz, however, justified?I made the decision to find out.

My PieCaken was delivered frozen two days after I placed my order.

Shipment of the PieCaken included dry ice to keep the product fresh. In accordance with the directions, I placed it in the refrigerator the night before I wanted to serve it and allowed it to rest out on the counter for two hours before digging in.If you keep the PieCaken firmly wrapped in its original packaging, unlike many other desserts, it may be stored in the freezer for up to three months without losing its freshness. It will also keep for up to seven days in the refrigerator.

At first glance, the PieCaken looked very impressive.

The 5-inch cake is topped with an oat crumble, and the colors of the crumble complement the pale-pink cinnamon buttercream on top. I brought the PieCaken to a Friendsgiving meal, and everyone at the table was amazed by how beautiful it looked.

The apple-pie filling on top also looked surprisingly bright and inviting.

I was pleasantly impressed by how fresh and luscious the apple-pie filling appeared for a cake that had just been resting in a box with dry ice for a day. From the time I opened the package, I could smell the warm and soothing blend of cinnamon, apples, and nutmeg filling the air.

The PieCaken looked even prettier when I sliced into it.

As you can see, the four layers of the cake are neatly divided and immediately discernible throughout the entirety of the confection. The pecan pie glistened on the bottom, the pumpkin pie in the middle had a lovely orange tone, and the spice cake on top appeared to be fluffy and light in texture. As a result of incorporating so many distinct pies into one dessert, I was concerned that the PieCaken might develop into a sloppy sloppy disaster. However, with its crisp lines and autumnal colors, each piece was a sight to see.

It was finally time to try a slice, and I couldn’t believe how well each layer paid tribute to its original pie.

The pecan pie layer was, without a doubt, my favorite of the entire cake.Everything about this pie was fantastic: the classic pie crust on the bottom (you can’t have pie without a crust, it’s a legal requirement), the delicious filling, and crunchy candied nuts throughout. The pumpkin pie layer was rich and creamy, with just a hint of spice to it.It was delicious. It had a beautifully flaky crust, just like the pecan layer, and all of the tastes worked nicely together, especially with the cinnamon buttercream icing.

The spice cake was the one that took me by surprise the most.By looking at it, I anticipated the cake to be substantial — almost like a pound cake — but the texture and flavor turned out to be airy and light as air.I couldn’t believe how light and airy it tasted, and the layer served as an excellent vessel for the hefty apple-pie filling that was layered on top.

Each layer of the PieCaken was delicious on its own, but all the flavors also worked great together.

Every layer of the pie was sampled individually before I took a huge mouthful of everything combined.I was amazed that none of the flavors of the separate pies clashed with one another. It’s a veritable feast of seasonal tastes that all come together in one dish.It is important to notice that this dish is quite sweet. The combination of the multiple pies and the cinnamon buttercream was a little too much for some of my friends who tried it, however they all praised the individual layers of flavor and texture.

The PieCaken, on the other hand, is the ultimate Christmas treat if you’re seeking for something truly special.

Overall, the PieCaken is a really fun and unique dessert that will impress your friends and family — and shake up your Thanksgiving.

The PieCaken serves 12 to 16 people, which makes it great for either a Friendsgiving or a big Thanksgiving dinner. I brought my leftovers to another party the next day, and it was so fun watching everyone get excited about all the different pies in the cake. And as someone who doesn’t abide by Thanksgiving dessert traditions, I thought the PieCaken was a really great way to sample a bunch of different holiday flavors at the dinner table. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a skeptic when it comes to crazy desserts that sometimes seem like they were made more for Instagram grids than our stomachs. But the PieCaken is the real deal, and I’m not surprised that its brought holiday cheer to so many people — Kelly Ripa included — for so many years. DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Prepare an 8-inch cake pan by spraying it with nonstick cooking spray and lining it with a ring of parchment paper
  • Make the Apple Topping:
  • It should be peeled, cored, and sliced into quarters. Each quarter should be cut into extremely thin (1/16″) pieces. Microwave the butter until it has melted. Toss the butter, brown sugar, and apples together in a large mixing basin. Spread the apple mixture into a thin layer in the bottom of the prepared cake pan and bake in the oven for 10 minutes, or until the sugar and butter are melted and the apples are beginning to soften, depending on your preference. It is OK for a small amount of liquid to have leaked out of the apples
  • however, excessive liquid should be avoided.
  • Allowing the pan to cool while you prepare the cake is recommended.
  • Make the Spice Cake as follows:
  • In a medium-sized mixing basin, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices until thoroughly combined. In a large mixing basin, whisk together the oil and sugar until well combined
  • this is much simpler to accomplish by hand than with an electric mixer. If you truly enjoy the mixer, put it to good use. Add both of the eggs and whisk until smooth
  • you don’t have to spend a lot of time on this, just whisk it all together until it comes together. Whisk in the buttermilk and vanilla until everything is well-combined. Add the dry ingredients in two installments, stirring until blended
  • \sCarefully pour the batter over the apple layer. The danger of dumping it on top is that it will displace the apples and spoil the attractive apple arrangement! (It will still have a pleasant flavor)
  • Reheat the cake pan at 350 degrees for another 20 to 30 minutes, or until the middle of the cake is completely cooked. After the cake has been allowed to cool for 20 minutes, carefully remove it out of the pan and onto a cooling rack. Remove the parchment paper from the oven. Allow it cool completely while you prepare the frosting.
  • Prepare the Cinnamon Buttercream Frosting as follows:
  • Make sure you have a saucepan that will fit inside of the bowl of your KitchenAid, and fill it with three inches of water before bringing it to a simmer. Place the egg whites and sugar in a mixing dish and set it over a kettle of hot water to whisk constantly until stiff peaks form. Stir the mixture for for 4 minutes, or until the sugar has completely dissolved and the fluid is heated.
  • Using the whisk attachment on your mixer, whip the bowl on medium high until it is completely cool (about 8 to 10 minutes). To begin, cut the butter into 1 inch cubes and slowly add them to the mixer. Make sure that all of the butter has been mixed and that the frosting is light and airy (about 5 minutes). Whisk in the salt, vanilla, and cinnamon until everything is well-combined.
  • Build the PieCaken:
  • Chilling the pies will make it simpler to assemble the PieCaken
  • Using a tiny knife, cut away the outer crust of the pies, leaving only the filling and the bottom crust
  • Refrigerate the PieCaken until ready to serve. Remove the top of the cake, which is now at the bottom of the cake, using a serrated knife to cut it off. Make a straight horizontal incision through the cake approximately a half inch up the edge of the cake to accomplish this. Place the pecan pie on an 8-inch cake board or serving dish and set aside the crumbs for munching. Spread a 12 inch layer of icing over the top of the pie to cover it completely. Place the pumpkin pie on top of the crust and apply a 12 inch layer of icing over it. Place the cake on top of the icing, with the apple side facing up. Trim the sides of the cake so that they are flush with the pies, using a serrated knife.
  • Consume the leftovers
  • Using an offset spatula, apply a 12 inch layer of frosting around the cake, being sure to cover the edges completely. Pipe a lovely border around the top of the cake with a piping bag fitted with the tip of your choice. Because the apples are visible on top of the cake, I like to leave the top of the cake unfrosted.
  • Refrigerate the PieCaken for at least an hour, or carefully wrap it up for up to five days.
  • Allow the cake to rest at room temperature for an hour before serving to allow the buttercream to soften.
  • Using a sharp knife that has been soaked in hot water, cut the PieCaken into 8 to 12 slices.
  • With whipped cream or ice cream on the side, if desired

The real origins of piecaken, the Internet’s latest dessert craze

  • IRL Published on November 24th, 2015.
  • Updated at 2:39 p.m.
  • on May 27, 2021.
  • CDT It’s official: piecaken is the most popular dessert during Thanksgiving.

A recent episode of LIVE with Kelly and Michael suggested that the piecaken is a new dessert discovery, which the cheerful morning team took to heart.Although it appears to be a new invention, this unusual Thanksgiving dessert has been around since 2010.Indeed, if you search for the hashtagpiecaken on social media, you’ll discover photographs of cakes that have been cut in half to expose jammy red strawberry or golden apple pie filling. What exactly is a pikecaken? Is it a piece of cake?

  • Is that a slice of pie?
  • Is it one or the other?
  • A more accurate description of piecaken is that it is dessert’s answer to the turducken.
  • Moreover, similar to its main course counterpart, piecaken continues to gain popularity year after year as a result of a variety of circumstances.

The piecaken is similar to the turducken in that it requires putting one thing (a pie) inside another thing (a cake) (cake).Similar to the turducken, the piecaken has an intriguing sense of excess; you can have your cake—and your pie—and have it all at the same time. Finally, both meals appear to have been created just for Instagram’s throngs of foodporn, which only seem to increase in number over the holidays.Chef Shaquay Peacock, a former Chopped contestant, describes the piecaken on her blog in the following way: ″Every once in a while, I surf the Internet in quest of new and interesting recipes to try.I was in the mood to bake pies, and that was all I could think about.

Whilst looking for new pie ideas, I came across something that I had never heard of, let alone seen before.Piecaken is a brilliant concept, and thanks to whoever came up with it.Piecaken is the term used to describe when a pie is cooked within a cake.

  • ″On the exterior, it appears to be a standard cake, but when you slice into it, you discover that it is actually a pie.″ Although Piecaken seems to be a cake on the exterior, slicing into one will reveal a pie that has been cooked on the interior.
  • When it comes to the varieties of pie or cake that are most suited for a piecaken, the possibilities are virtually unlimited.
  • Chef Shaquay, for example, created a pumpkin pie that was cooked into a spice cake and topped with a maple butter cream icing to finish the dish.
  • This week on LIVE with Kelly and Michael, Kelly Ripa feigned joy when she saw a flier for a $49 piecaken concoction that consisted of pecan pie and pumpkin pie in an apple upside-down cake that was put together with a cinnamon buttercream and topped with whipped cream.
  1. When Ripa said, ″It’s worth every cent,″ she was deadpanning and chomping on the flyer.
  2. Mr.
  3. Zac Young, chief pastry chef at David Burke fabrick in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood, is the brains behind the Kelly and Michael piecakes.
  4. The Daily Dot obtained an e-mail interview with Young, who revealed how he introduced the dessert to the David Burke fabrick with the initial concept to offer piecaken by the slice as a Thanksgiving special.
  5. Following a snapshot of his piecaken creation on David Burke fabrick’s Instagram account last week, the rest, as they say, is history in the world of viral desserts.
  6. In fact, as many dessert connoisseurs have pointed out on social media sites like as Twitter and Instagram in the wake of the broadcast of LIVE with Kelly and Michael, the piecaken is nothing new.

The ″cherpumple″ could perhaps be a more appropriate term for this [email protected] The originalpiecaken was created by @ charlesphoenix, and it’s known as aCherpumple in his honor!Thayer Abaigael (@SisterofWOE) posted on November 24, 2015, about women of color. Many people deserve credit.Originally created by Charles Phoenix, a coffee table book author and guest judge on Cake Wars: Christmas, the Franken-dessert has been traced back to him.

  • This recipe for the cherpumple (also known as ″the monster cake″), a three layer cake filled with cherry, apple, and pumpkin pie, was developed by Phoenix, who claims to have invented the recipe.
  • In an interview with the Daily Dot, Phoenix revealed the unusual backstory behind his Franken-dessert.
  • He came up with the cherpumple in 2007, he claims, in order to reduce the amount of paper plates his family wastes over Thanksgiving.
  • Every year, Phoenix’s family prepared three pies—cherry, pumpkin, and apple—as well as a spice cake made from an ancient recipe, which was passed down from generation to generation.
  • What was the ultimate result?
  • Paper dishes were stacked high in heaps upon mounds.
  • One morning, he walked into the kitchen and saw a stack of disposable plates piled high in the trash bin.
  • He recalled this incident.
  • I told you we needed to save money on paper plates.
  • The statement ″We’re not a green family,’″ Phoenix recalled saying to her family members.
  • What is his solution?
  • Bake all of the pies at the same time and top with an additional layer of white cake.
  • In a way, it was like marrying our family heirloom cake with the pies,″ Phoenix explained.
  • A video of the so-called ″King of Retro″ baking the monster-pie cake was released on his website, which also includes other seasonally appropriate cherpumple recipes, and his masterpiece was featured on the top page of The Wall Street Journal in 2010.
  • David Burke’s piecaken, or any of the other piecaken recipes that have appeared on the Internet, including a site devoted just to piecaken recipes, have never been attempted by Phoenix.

Despite this, he is delighted to spread the delicious, gooey love: The baker’s advise to piecaken and cherpumple enthusiasts is to start by producing the Franken-creations at home, and not to be discouraged if your creations don’t come out Instagram-worthy right away. One piece of advice: start by baking the pies.″Your cherpumple may fall, fail, or bleed,″ he cautioned the patient. In contrast to your grandmother’s pie, cherpumple pieces don’t have to be perfectly round.Even though Phoenix claims that he is not the first person to bake a pie in a cake, he is likely the first person to have been Internet famous for doing so in 2007, according to the author of the article.

Describe your thoughts on social media’s propensity to ″go viral″ in the case of desserts.″As we all know, there is no way to adequately convey how the Internet has revolutionized the world,″ Phoenix stated.″All you have to do is start your own network, and everything takes off.″ The cherpumple was transformed into something. That event became, shall we say, legendary.″ Image courtesy of David Burke fabrick on Instagram.* Published on November 24, 2015, at 4:09 p.m.

Move Over Turducken. The Christmas PieCaken Is Here

  • What’s the point of stuffing two different kinds of pie inside a cake and covering it with buttercream?
  • In no way, shape, or form.
  • However, doing so provides us delight, and what greater reason could there be than sugar-induced bliss to justify our actions?
  • The PieCaken is, of course, the subject of our discussion.

PieCaken is, in Katina Talley’s words, ″basically the poster child for excess for the sake of excess.″ Talley owns and operates Sweet Magnolia’s Bake Shop in Omaha, Nebraska, which specializes in custom cakes and pastries.″Aside from the fact that it takes half a day to prepare, PieCaken is also extremely efficient. This is the easiest method to consume all of your favorite desserts and put yourself into a food coma.″ And if that isn’t a compelling enough incentive to consume it, nothing is.How did this odd delicacy that is suited for holiday celebrations come to be, and where can you get your hands on one, are the big questions. When it comes to learning about the PieCaken — from its history to its ingredients to how to get your hands on one just in time for the holidays — there’s no better time than the present.

History of the PieCaken

  • The PieCaken was created in 2015 by famed New York pastry chef Zac Young and his crew in order to develop a dessert that could compete with the turducken.
  • Soon after, he began posting pictures of his creations on Instagram, and people began pleading with him for copies of his work.
  • Young’s PieCaken became a viral success shortly after, and copycat variations of the recipe have sprung up in bakeries and kitchens all across the country since then.
  • So, what exactly is contained within one of these contraptions?

A PieCaken embodies the best of the best when it comes to traditional holiday flavors and textures: it contains the following flavors and textures: This year’s Christmas PieCaken, which is now available if you act quickly, is made up of layers of pecan pie, eggnog cheesecake, and red velvet cake, all topped with amaretto buttercream and cherry pie filling.Approximately 6 pounds (2.7 kilograms) is the weight of the 8-inch (20-centimeter) round cake, which feeds between 12 and 16 people.
