Visiting Cake Boss – a trip to Carlo’s Bake Shop in Hoboken, NJ
Evening TV sessions with my mother were some of my favorite recollections from my childhood when I lived with my parents.Cake Boss was one of the shows that my friends and I used to binge watch together. In it, we followed Buddy Valastro, who owns and operates Carlo’s Bake Shop, a family-owned bakery where he creates wedding and specialty cakes that are out of this world and state-of-the-art for nearly any event.
His ingenuity and artistry have shown to be limitless throughout the course of the seasons, and he has completely transformed the way we think about cake and pastry manufacturing. You want to make a dessert that looks like your cow and that you can actually milk? You’ve arrived to the correct location.Alternatively, perhaps you’ve had your heart set on a 5-tier wedding cake with special effects lighting…There’s nothing else to say.
Despite the fact that the program ended its run on TLC in 2017, Buddy Valastro has gained something of a cult following that extends well beyond the United States.Buddy recently made headlines again when, in conjunction with the news of her pregnancy, Gigi Hadid revealed that Buddy was the brains behind her 25th birthday cake, fulfilling a long-held ambition of hers.Since I’m a major fan of Buddy’s incredible ability, I’ve always wanted to combine my very first New York City vacation with a visit to the bakery in Hoboken, New Jersey…
- Because that holiday coincided with my mother’s birthday, what better way to surprise her than with a package of delicacies from Carlo’s Bakery?

How to get to Carlo’s Bakery from New York City
Yes, Carlo’s Bake Shop is located in another state, but don’t let that deter you from visiting — traveling to Hoboken from New York City is no more difficult or time-consuming than navigating the streets of Manhattan. In about 10 minutes, you can be at the World Trade Center site, and 15 minutes, you can be in the Midtown region.Hoboken is only a short PATH train trip away from the center of New York City.
At the time of this writing, a SingleRide ticket costs $2.75 and may be purchased at ticket machines located in any PATH station, including Penn Station. You may also choose for a more convenient method, which is accessible in selected stations and costs $5.50 for a 2-Trip MetroCard.Unfortunately, limitless MetroCards are not permitted on PATH trains; but, if you have a MetroCard that allows you to pay per ride, you are set to go!
Do you have to queue outside Carlo’s Bake Shop?
Because of the unwavering popularity of Cake Boss, I wanted to do some research to find out how long we can expect to wait in line so that I could schedule our visit to Hoboken properly.Despite the fact that I was unable to uncover much information, I did come across one source that displayed a sign in front of the bakery directing people to a big queue that stretched around the block.Having planned for additional traffic by factoring in some extra time on Sunday afternoon, we were prepared for it when we arrived…
Therefore, imagine our astonishment when we arrived at our location and saw that neither a sign nor a single person could be found.Having taken the obligatory shots outside the bakery, we finally made our way inside, where we were one of the only people in the place. Our time was spent pacing between the display cases and sneaking looks inside the baking room, which brings us to the next point…
Can you meet Buddy or other family members at Carlo’s Bakery?
It is my regret that I must bust your bubble, but seeing Buddy at Carlo’s Bake Shop is extremely unlikely, if not outright impossible.Due to his various other initiatives and responsibilities, he is only seldom able to visit the bakery.Customers are frequently served by his sisters, Mary and Grace, and I’ve seen several images of individuals who were fortunate enough to meet them — even the official website states that you are always welcome to inquire as to whether any of the cast members are there!
Even if we weren’t fortunate enough, it’s absolutely worth a shot!
How much does it cost to buy a cake from Carlo’s Bake Shop?
I’m well aware that this is probably the most often asked question, and I’ll admit that many Cake Boss episodes had me frantically Google ″how much does it cost to have a cake custom crafted by Buddy?″ so I could figure out when I should begin saving…Your prediction is still as good as mine, based on information from multiple web sources and consumer testimonials.I’m more than ready to provide some insight into the process of purchasing pastries and cookies from Carlo’s Bakery (baby steps…)!
As soon as we entered through the door, we were confronted with an overwhelming selection of cakes, pastries, and sweets, each of which looked more delectable than the previous.Unfortunately, because we were leaving New York the next day and had a long travel ahead of us, we only managed to acquire a croissant for each of us and a present for my mother.Although it was difficult, I was able to admire the contents of each display case while attempting the near-impossible process of reducing my options down to just one object. Not to mention the world-famous cannolis, delectable lobster tails, and don’t even get me started on the red velvet slices (I’ve previously confessed my love for everything red velvet)…How about just one of everything, please?!
What are the prices at Carlo’s Bake Shop like?
Several individuals had complained about Carlo’s Bakery’s costs on the internet before my family and I visited. However, no specifics had been provided.I anticipated that the visit would put a dent in my wallet, but, to be honest, it didn’t stand out much from the other locations we saw during our trip in New York.
Cupcakes were priced between $2.95 and $3.50 towards the end of last year, while most cookies were priced between $3.25 and $3.50 at the same time period. While significantly more expensive than the previous day’s pastries, they were nonetheless reasonably priced given the bakery’s national renown — the vast majority of them cost between $3.75 and $5.95, with only one costing more than that.Unless otherwise noted, all solo desserts were $6.95, while cake pieces were $7.95 each.Alternatively, if you’re like me and have been dreaming of having a cake custom crafted by Buddy but haven’t quite found the right occasion or have the financial wherewithal to do so, you may settle for one of the pre-made alternatives, which start at $26.95.T-shirts and coffee mugs were among the goods offered, so if you’re a die-hard fan of the program, it’s well worth planning for a little more spending money on your trip!
And finally… is it worth the money?
When it came to buying something for my mother (I was visiting her the following Friday and there was only a limited selection of things that would last this long), I went with a traditional cannoli and a box of varied butter cookies – the cannoli cost $4.50 and the cookie box cost roughly $25.My mother graciously let us all to sample the cookies – I’m not a fan of sprinkle cookies, so these fell short for me, but the cannoli was without a doubt the greatest I’ve ever had.Until this day, the golden crunchy shell filled with light, fluffy cream has stayed with me.
Although costs are expected to fluctuate in the future, I hope you will find this estimate to be useful in the meantime. It’s true that if you’re anything like me and would gladly have one of each, the overall cost may quickly add up, but it was an experience I would cheerfully pay for over and over if I lived nearby – I have a feeling it will become a standard on my future NYC visits…Have you ever seen the television show Cake Boss? What sort of cake would you get from Buddy if you could have any kind of cake you wanted created to order?
