How Much Does a Sheet Cake Cost?

That is not a question that can be answered with a ″simple″ response, in my opinion.Sheet cakes can range in price from \$25 to \$150, which is a significant disparity in terms of value. What’s going on?When purchasing a sheet cake, how much will you be charged in total? Many factors will influence the ultimate price, including the type of construction used.Let’s take a deeper look at what’s going on.

Size of the Cake

A ″simple″ answer isn’t really appropriate for answering the question. Sheet cakes can range in price from \$25 to \$150, which is a significant disparity in terms of cost. Who knows what’s up. When you purchase a sheet cake, how much will you actually pay? An extensive number of factors will influence the final cost of the project, including: Let’s take a deeper look at what we have here.

Flavor

A large number of sheet cakes are available in two primary flavors: chocolate and vanilla, respectively.Marble is also available as a ″basic″ taste at some establishments. While these flavors are certain to be delectable, not everyone is content to stick to the tried and true flavors.Does this ring true for you?If you want to try the ″premium″ flavors, you’ll have to pay a little more money.Premium flavors will, as you might expect, be more expensive than standard tastes.

• As a result, the \$25 quarter sheet cake may become a \$50 quarter sheet cake since you chose red velvet instead of plain chocolate.

Frostings and Fillings

Almost single sheet cake on the face of the planet is going to be decorated with buttercream or whipped cream in some way.As previously stated, these are the ″basic″ choices that are included in the base price. The majority of individuals will be satisfied with these alternatives because there are often a variety of tastes to pick from. What happens, though, if this is not the case? For those of us who prefer cream cheese frosting, there’s a solution for you. However, while I am a major lover of ″custom″ frostings, I can warn you that some bakers may charge a higher premium if you request a frosting that is not available in the standard selections.

Decorations

Decorations are another another (quite expensive) component of sheet cakes. It is possible that a basic sheet cake with the words ″Happy Birthday″ on it will be inexpensive.Adding embellishments, such as sugar balloons or chocolate flowers, may, however, increase the cost of the cake.Depending on the amount of intricacy and ornamentation you want, the cost might increase by anywhere from \$50 to \$300 or more.(You read it right: ″Yes, you read that correctly.″ You have to consider how time-consuming and complicated the decorating process is for the baker before you can understand why this is the case.

Cake Toppers

Is a cake topper required for your cake? After that, you may expect to spend even more money. Custom cake toppers may easily range in price from \$25 to \$100 depending on their complexity. It all boils down to what sort of cake topper you’re looking for in the first place.

Layers

The majority of sheet cakes will have a single layer of frosting. That is simply the ″traditional″ manner of going about things. However, this does not rule out the possibility of certain bakers experimenting with their sheet cakes and coming up with something unique.Finding a bakery that sells layers, and then deciding to purchase one, is going to be very expensive.A stacked sheet cake is going to cost you a big lot.An additional layer might easily add another \$40 or more to the cost.

Delivery

1. Not all bakeries provide delivery service.
2. But even if they do, don’t expect to be able to select the ″free delivery″ option during the checkout process.
3. Cakes may be finicky and need extra-special planning to ensure that they are delivered without a hitch.

Having said that, depending on the cake and where you are located, bakers can charge upwards of \$20.The good news is that you can be assured that your cake will arrive in pristine condition, with no bumps, scratches, or flaws.

2. When purchasing a cake, a major, big-box retailer such as Walmart or Sam’s Club will charge less, but a smaller grocery shop, local bakery, or home baker may price a little more.
3. It all comes down to what you’re searching for in the first place.

Do you want to be able to customize your order even further?Do you wish to help out your community’s small businesses?Do you want to be able to pick from hundreds of different design possibilities in one store? It all boils down to your requirements and what is best for you and your group!

How to Charge for Cakes

1. How to Determine the Price of Cakes.
2. What is the best way to charge for cakes?
3. What is the best way to establish prices?

What criteria do you use to determine how much to charge? What would you charge for this cake, if you were to make it?Every every week, I receive emails and comments (and, on sometimes, phone calls) from people asking me how to calculate what to charge for cakes or how to price cakes.Despite the fact that I’ve already shared it with a number of readers privately, it seemed like a good time to make the piece public at this point.

1. Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in it.
2. So here’s what I’ve come up with.
3. Please keep in mind that this essay is written mostly for home bakers, but anyone working in the cake decorating industry should find some useful information here!
4. One of the most difficult aspects of running a cake company is determining how much to charge for cakes.
• When I first started, I was simply tossing out random numbers and making educated guesses.
• However, after conducting some study, I came to the conclusion that charging ″by the serving″ is the most effective method for me, and it is also the most common method used throughout the cake business.
• The price of all cakes is determined by a basic price, which is then increased based on the complexity of the cake, the number of layers, etc.
• In addition, I charge for delivery.

5 Top Tips for Pricing Cakes

1. For the first two years or so that I was in the cake business, I charged \$1-\$2 a serving for my cakes.
2. That was a bad decision.
3. Despite the fact that I was unskilled, flying by the seat of my trousers, and learning as I went, I was still charging too little.

I was putting myself in danger by taking on too many orders and generating too little money, and my family and homeschooling were suffering as a result. This is an earlier price chart for me; my prices are now higher.I was also attempting to ″compete″ with mass production bakeries and grocery store bakeries in terms of pricing, and I didn’t want to charge ″too much″ more than they were charging at the time.Do not even consider attempting to compete with mass stores, as I have learned the hard way.

1. After more than two years of this, I realized I needed to make a change.
2. Everyone, even trustworthy friends and professional cake decorators, agreed that I was undercharging for the services I was providing.
3. Even some of my clients would comment on how ″cheap″ my cakes were, or how they would drive 45 miles to acquire a cake from me because it was ″so much cheaper″ than some of the custom bakery cakes they were used to getting elsewhere.
4. That was NOT the kind of reputation I desired.
• It’s also not the kind of reputation you want to have!

You do not want to be the cheap cake lady!

1. Another chart from a previous generation: Consequently, in 2012 (and again in 2013), I was forced to rethink my approach to charging for cakes.
2. After taking a look at what I was doing, I decided to raise my fees and accept fewer orders going forward.
3. I’m pleased to report that I’m now generating a solid profit on a consistent basis.

I still don’t charge as much as other neighboring bakeries (the nearest ″real″ town is 35 miles away – I live in the STICKS!), but since boosting my rates, I’ve been able to pay myself on a regular basis, which is wonderful!I’m also not undercutting or stealing business from local bakeries or bakers by offering ″cheap″ cakes. Please note that doing so will result in your being despised!

1. I believe it is OK to have cheaper prices (but not super-duper grocery store cheap) while you are first starting out and attempting to establish yourself, but once you have gained expertise, you should be earning a profit.
2. Particularly if you’re putting in high-quality, equivalent effort.
3. Although I am unable to answer that issue for you (since some bakers/cakers just do better work than others), you must be honest with yourself and establish your fees in accordance with that honesty.
4. For example, if you reside in a large city where the typical price for a beautifully decorated cake is \$7 per serving and you know (or have been told) that your work is as excellent as or better than theirs, don’t sell yourself short — compete with their prices!
• If your work and the quality of your decorating are more in line with what they’d find at a grocery store bakery, you may want to adjust your prices to be more in line with what they’re charging (although not as low as they are – they’re still not putting out homemade cakes and they’re still not paying retail for ingredients!).

You need to value your cake work & charge accordingly.

1. This is the most crucial thing to remember.
2. You must place a high value on your work in order for your clients to place a high value on your work!
3. Never, ever say or accept the phrase ″it’s only cake″!

Someone else may provide them with ″only cake,″ if that is what they choose!Oh, and please allow me to say this. When I first increased my rates, I was scared that I would lose consumers, among other things. In the meanwhile, it’s still difficult when people balk at my rates or decide not to purchase from me because they believe I’m too pricey (especially local people in my tiny town).

1. But, to be really honest, I’m still turning down 3-5 orders every week since I’m completely booked!
2. (PS: The vast majority of my customers, perhaps 90 percent or more, travel more than 30 miles to purchase my cakes.
3. I have a fantastic reputation, and customers aren’t bothered by the long commute!).
4. What a relief to know that I’m actually earning money doing what I enjoy rather than sacrificing my family life for naught.
• My cake is perfectly acceptable to those who cannot pay for it.
• Sometimes it’s a true budget issue, and I personally live within a budget – this does not bother me in the least.
• In other cases, though, clients request ″extra special″ items at an unexceptional price, and I am unable to accommodate their requests.
• I believe what I do to be an art form, and I typically devote 3-8 hours to each cake.
• I, like everyone else, require compensation for the time I devote to my job.

People who wish to pay \$.50 (or less) per serving must travel to a grocery store and get a low-cost cake in which the icing is scooped out of a 5 gallon bucket and the sheet cake is baked hundreds of miles away and delivered frozen.Although I have purchased and consumed my fair share of Walmart cakes, I do not hold it in contempt – it is nothing to be sneezed at – this is not what I do!A bespoke cake that needs me to take away hours and hours of my time from my family is not going to be affordable, especially if they want it delivered.Period.Your reputation of being cheap is something you don’t want, and you have to make it worthwhile for YOU to do it or you’ll burn out and stop.I do, of course, make allowances for family and friends in special circumstances.

I frequently offer them a discount, but I seldom do them for free, unless they are members of my direct family, in which case they may still be responsible for the cost of the materials.

How did I come to my ″per serving″ price?

• On the basis of three considerations, I developed my price list: Consider how much other area bakers/bakeries are charging for similar services. Call them and see if you can work anything out. We have to charge less at home from time to time, but not by much. Bakeries incur additional expenses such as paying for their facility, additional utility bills, commercial equipment, and maybe compensating other employees, among other things. You, on the other hand, want to be competitive. In this case, you should charge \$3-3.50 per serving if they charge \$4, rather than you charging \$1 per serving if they charge \$4
• this will cover the cost of your materials and other expenditures. You’ll need to put in some effort and do some arithmetic, but you’ll need to know how much your cakes are costing you. Costs for ingredients (break them down per serving), cake boards, tape, boxes (for deliveries), business cards (and even energy) should all be added up (if possible, check your previous bills and see if there was an increase after you started caking). All of these considerations are important
• your time. This is critically crucial! As a homeschooling mother of six children, I must place a high value on my time. I don’t want to be working on a cake for the fifth time in the hopes of making only \$20 profit. that would be terrible! When I initially looked at my money and profit, I saw that I was only making approximately \$2 each hour. That was really unacceptable. You must be aware of, or be able to provide an extremely accurate estimate of, the amount of time you spend on cakes. While it is true that there will be times when you will make a major mistake and something will take significantly longer than you anticipated, in general, you should have a good idea of the time involved and determine how much you want or need to earn per hour in order for it to be worth your time and energy

My Cake Pricing Guidelines:

• So here you have it. Please note that this is not a full pricing list, but rather a broad overview of the costs I charge for decorated party and wedding cakes. • smash cakes cost \$20-\$35 when ordered with a party cake, depending on size and design. The \$20 cake is a single layer 5″ round that I torte and fill to make it approximately 3″ tall, and it cost me \$20 to prepare. Always use buttercream and only the bare minimum of embellishments. Here’s an illustration:
• Delivery outside of a 10-mile radius of my residence begins at \$75. (UPDATE: The majority of my cakes are sent to larger towns around 40 miles away
• this \$75 cost covers those three towns only
• birthday cakes must be picked up in my little town
• I do not send wedding cakes.)
• Cupcakes start at \$20 per dozen, with bespoke embellishments at \$30 per dozen and more
