    Heading up to Glacier National Park

    We made the decision to come to Glacier National Park despite the fact that our traveling companions warned us about the smoke up in the mountains.We had made accommodations for the first week of September in Waterton Lakes National Park, so we knew we had to give it our best go.As we approached, we could immediately see that it was going to be a smoky night ahead.

    • Montana was engulfed in flames.
    • There was a lot of smoke in the air, and the photographs just do not capture how thick it was.
    • We could even see a few fires on the mountain tops as we were going up, which was unusual for this time of year.
    • We only stayed one night with Jim and Mary’s in Missoula since we had so much washing to do after our week of boondocking in Sawtooth National Recreation Area the previous week.
    • In addition, we wanted to get at the campground early to ensure that we would be able to secure a place.

    Apgar Campground

    We arrived at Apgar Campground in the early afternoon and found it to be approximately half-full at that point.In our minds, we were going to start at the far end of the campsite and work our way up to the front.So many of the campsites were on sloping ground or seemed like we wouldn’t be able to get into them due of their orientation.

    • We chose the first campground that appeared to be rather level.
    • There are walking and bicycling paths that lead directly out of the Apgar Campsite, which is a wonderful perk of staying in the campground.
    • From the Apgar Village and Visitor Center, we were able to ride our bikes directly there.

    We rode our bikes to Apgar Village, where it was a little difficult to locate a spot to put our bikes.It’s a small but charming hamlet with a general shop and a few of restaurants.However, due to the fact that we were unable to locate a location to store our bikes, we decided to travel to Lake McDonald.

    • Fortunately, it hadn’t become too smoky yet.
    • Fortunately, we had at least one day to take in the breathtaking beauty of the lake.
    • If you look closely at the top photo of the lake, you’ll notice that the clouds to the right of the mountain ranges are really smoke from the Sprague Fire, which is burning nearby.
    • Given the great weather and the children’s desire to play in the water, we returned to our RV and had them change into their swimsuits and retrieve their bucket and nets before heading back to the park.
    • They engaged in their favorite activity, which was attempting to catch minnows in the lake (catch and release of course).
    • It had been a pleasant and restful day.

    How to bake a cake on a propane camp fire

    Katie’s birthday fell the next day.So, because she expressed an interest in creating her own cake, we decided to try with baking one over a ″camp fire.″ I had purchased only a box mix to keep things as easy as possible, as this was my first time attempting to bake a cake while camping.Katie and I made the cake according to the directions on the box of cake mix.

    • Afterwards, Spencer cooked a cast iron dutch oven (with the lid on) over a campfire, with approximately one quart of water in the bottom of the pot.
    • We kept the fire as low as we possibly could and kept an eye on the temperature with our remote digital thermometer.
    • We were concerned about overheating the cake since we didn’t want the bottom of the cake to burn.
    • Once the oven was preheated, we gently lowered the pan of cake mix into the dutch oven using oven mitts.
    • During the process, we checked on it frequently and added additional water when the water started to evaporate.
    • It was over as soon as the toothpick came out clean.
    • It took about 45 minutes to bake the cake, which is about twice as long as the instructions on the box stated it would take.
    • Katie asked for my assistance in frosting and writing on it.
    • She wanted to decorate it, and the doggies were hoping that she would drop more sprinkles on the ground to make it look more festive.

    During the second day of our stay on Lake Michigan, the air was much more smoky.We could tell right away that the smoke smelled really strong just by walking around the campground.As you can see in the photo above, the mountains that we had been able to view the day before were completely obscured by smoke the next day.

    • The youngsters, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the lake.
    • We had leased it for an hour and were able to simply stroll about on the calm waters of the lake.
    • The boat rental company reported that the water was significantly calmer than typical that afternoon.
    • That was greatly appreciated by us.
    • Spencer let Katie to ″drive″ the boat for a short period of time, and we all had a terrific time.

    Glacier National Park Junior Ranger Badge

    Our visit to Apgar had coincided with the completion of their Junior Ranger books, so we proceeded to the Visitor Center to have them receive their Junior Ranger Badge.People may learn about the distinctions between Grizzly Bears and Black Bears at a table in front of the visitor center, where a ranger was on hand to answer their questions.He had a few of bear pelts out for the kids to touch and compare the claws on, which they enjoyed doing.

    • After that, it was Junior Ranger time.
    • We were a little saddened to see that the entire state of Montana was engulfed in flames.
    • I couldn’t believe how broad the blazes were.
    • We felt sorry for the people since we were able to just go, but there were so many houses with cisterns in front of their homes that we felt sorry for them all.
    • We have firsthand experience with the terror that comes with flames threatening your property.
    • Hopefully, they will be able to get all of the flames under control quickly and keep everyone safe.
    • We had to cancel our plans to Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada, which we did reluctantly.
    • According to the reports, they also experienced a large number of fires.
    • We assumed we’d have to come back here to make up for lost time some other time.
    • Our next objective was to choose a location where we could spend the long Labor Day weekend.

    Making Edible Trees

    The only obstacle we had was figuring out how to construct edible tree tops.Some individuals had taken Pretzel rods and drizzled melted green chocolate over them to create trees, which I considered to be rather creative.Brilliant!

    • We looked in three different local stores, but none had them.
    • We reside in Canada, so perhaps this isn’t a uniquely Canadian phenomenon?

    • As we strolled along the aisle of sugary delight, my daughter discovered these Pirouline rolled wafer cookies and immediately visualized them as the ideal tree trucks for our Christmas tree.
    • They were just amazing!
    • And let me tell you, trees have never tasted so amazing in my experience.

    1.Prepare the boxed cake mix according per the manufacturer’s directions.Divide the batter into two 8- or 9-inch round cake pans and bake for 30 minutes.

    • 2.After the cakes have been allowed to cool completely, arrange them on top of one another on a cake stand or cake plate.

    • Ice the stacked cakes with the chocolate icing that has been set aside.
    • Then, using Oreo cookie pieces that have been crushed, decorate the top of the cake.

    • To create the green chocolate tree toppers, either melt your green chocolate melts in a double boiler or set a heat-safe bowl over a pot of boiling water to melt your green chocolate melts.

    • Put two Pirouline cookie rolls on a piece of wax paper and set aside (or parchment paper).

    I made the error of not using parchment or wax paper, which resulted in my trees being quite difficult to remove from the plate.Take the melted chocolate and place it in a ziploc bag; then snip a little bit off the corner of the bag to use as a spatula.This will serve as your homemade piping bag.Making zigzag movements with the chocolate, shape it into the shape of a tree top by gently pressing it out.

    Once you’re satisfied with your trees, move on to the next step.After putting them in the freezer for 10 minutes, remove them and leave them aside.’ Making the campire cake topper may be done while your trees are setting up.

    To build a fire pit, combine some chocolate candy rocks with some pretzel sticks (cut the pretzel sticks in half if necessary).Finally, place your candles in the center of the table.7.Make a tent out of two graham crackers by leaning them against each other in the middle.

    You may apply some chocolate frosting on the top to help them stay together more securely.I didn’t use any frosting because they held together beautifully without it.8.When your trees are ready, remove them from the freezer and insert the cookie ends (also known as ″tree trucks″) into the cake.

    5 Ways to Cook Over a Campfire

    Cooking over an open fire is a fantastic way to prepare a meal, whether you are going camping, heading to the cabin, or organizing an adventure in your own garden.As a starting point, there are some essential pieces of equipment you should have when cooking over an open fire, including: a hot mitt or leather gloves for handling hot pots, long-handed tongs and/or a spatula for moving things around, and a bucket of water nearby to put out any stray sparks or put out the fire completely.Once you’ve gotten your fire starting, allow it to burn down to coals for more uniform heat distribution, which results in better cooking.

    • Then, using one of the five basic techniques listed below, prepare your food over the fire:

    1. On-a-Stick

    When it comes to cooking over an open fire, this is about as straightforward as it gets.Use a stick you’ve found in the woods or a metal one you’ve purchased – one prong, two prongs, three prongs, or whatever you have available.Make certain that your food is securely fastened to the stick so that it does not slip off when you flip the stick to toast all sides.

    • This type of cooking is ideal for typical campfire dishes such as marshmallows and hot dogs, among other things.
    • Alternatively, kabob-style with any number of veggies or meats can be used.

    Stick Bread

    • You may use any biscuit mix you choose.
    • Water
    • a stick that is longer than your arm and approximately the size of your finger across the circumference

    Combine the biscuit mix and just enough water to form a firm dough.Roll the dough into a ″snake″ with your hands after taking a portion the size of a ping pong ball from the bowl.Wrap the ″snake″ dough around the end of the stick and squeeze until it is securely bonded to the stick, as shown in the photo.

    • Bake the bread over an open fire until the exterior of the bread is golden and firm on the outside.
    • Allow to cool before carefully removing the bread off the stick.
    • If you choose, you can stuff the interior of the bread with butter, honey, jam, or peanut butter if you so wish.

    • Roasting stick
    • Fixings of your choice
    • Knife

    Cut the hot dogs in half lengthwise, leaving two inches of space in the centre of each half (that will go on the stick). Make four flaps on each end of the hot dog by slicing it a second time. Alternatively, cut the end of a hot dog into eighths. As you roast, the ends will curl up, giving the appearance of an octopus. An octo-dog is tough to wrap on a bun, so we just eat them on their own!

    2. Using Hot Water

    All you need for this cooking method is a vessel or kettle that can withstand the high temperatures of the fire.Because your pot or kettle will become blackened, avoid utilizing cookware that you use on a daily basis in the kitchen.The pot or kettle should be half-full of water when you lay it directly on the fire or coals down in the pit, or you may place it on an ash grate above the fire.

    • As soon as you start your fire, turn on the kettle so that it can take advantage of all of the heat and be ready when you need it later on.
    • With hot water, what can you do with it?
    • Hot liquids such as tea and cocoa, quick-cooking grains such as couscous or quinoa, noodles such as Ramen, oatmeal for morning meals, and other such items are recommended.
    • All you have to do is pour hot water into your cup or dish and stir.

    • In order to protect ashes from getting into your food, make sure your Dutch oven is securely closed.
    • Consider wrapping the interior of your Dutch oven with aluminum foil that can fold over the top of your dish before putting the lid on to prevent ashes from getting into your meal.
    • Examples of recipes that may be prepared on a cast iron frying pan or griddle include pancakes, hamburgers, chops, stir-fried vegetables, and more.
    • An apple crisp is one of our favorite dishes to make in the Dutch oven:

    Apple Crisp (serves 6-8)

    • 2 cans (each containing 21 ounces) apple pie filling
    • (Brown Sugar and Maple flavor is the best!) 2 packets of instant oatmeal (Brown Sugar and Maple flavor is the best!
    • Butter, cut (about 2-3 tablespoons)
    • Dutch oven (Dutch oven)
    • Foil

    Prepare a Dutch oven by lining it with aluminum foil (this is a pretty sticky recipe and using foil will make for an easier clean-up).Fill the Dutch oven halfway with apple pie filling.Over the pie filling, sprinkle the oatmeal packets.

    • Slices of butter should be placed on top of the oats.
    • Using 6 to 9 coals around the bottom of the oven and 12 to 18 coals on the top, bake for approximately 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
    • Every 10 minutes or so, rotate the oven on the embers to ensure even cooking.

    5. Pie Irons

    These incredible creations are fantastic for preparing a variety of dishes!A wide variety of outdoor equipment businesses, as well as camping departments at major retailers such as Target and Menards, carry these items.Make care to thoroughly oil the insides of the pie irons and to flip them frequently during baking.

    • It’s possible to cook almost anything between two slices of bread – we like to use sandwich fillings, make pot pies with a variety of vegetables and precooked meat, and put frozen tater tots or thawed frozen hash browns between two pancakes.

    Combine the egg and milk in a separate bowl.Tear the bread slice into bits approximately 1/2 inch in size and toss them in the egg wash to coat.Continue to mix until the bread is completely covered.

    • Pour the mixture into a pie iron that has been greased.
    • It is important to turn it regularly so that it does not burn.
    • When the dish is ready, top it with butter, jam, or syrup.
