How to Make a Half Sphere Cake

In this video lesson, you will learn how to make hemispheric and complete spherical cakes without the use of a cake pan or any other cutting tools. The use of this simple form allows you to create a variety of 3D sculpted cakes, including soccer balls and basketballs as well as planets, faces and globes.

How to Make a Half Sphere Cake

In a bowl, baking a half spherical cake is the quickest and most convenient method. You may use a typical stainless steel prep bowl, but you can also use an 8″ globe pan if you like. I nest the bowl within a standard round cake pan in order to ensure that it remains level during the baking process. The following items are required: 8″ hemisphere pan

For nesting the bowl mold (commission earned), you’ll need an 8″ round cake pan or ring, as well as butter and flour to coat the baking pan and wrap the cake in plastic wrap. For the buttercream frosting, you’ll need a wood turntable or cake wheel (commission earned), and for the buttercream frosting, you’ll need a small offset spatula (commission earned).

1. Bake the Cake in a Bowl

  2. When using vanilla buttercream frosting, the filling is as simple as it gets.

  4. Using the remaining plastic wrap, wrap the cake completely and place it in the freezer for 30 minutes, or until the cake is cool enough to extract from the baking pan.

3. Pop the Cake Out of the Bowl

Because there are no corners or edges involved, it is, in my opinion, less difficult to frost than typical square and cylinder designs. This task may be completed using the palm of your hand. Alternatively, you can make use of a few tools.

METHOD1 Half Sphere Cake Frosting with Tools

  1. Crumb cover the cake with the buttercream frosting, using a tiny offset spatula to do so.
  2. In order to keep the cake stable while it is being moved in and out of the refrigerator to be frosted, it is best to place it on a working platform of some sort, such as a flat platter, larger cardboard circle, an old cake board, or, as in this case, a pizza pan (for which you will receive a commission).

However, this method is only effective if the cake has been well refrigerated so that the buttercream icing is solid.Remove spatula marks off the surface of the cake by wiping it with a piece of clean paper towel while the turntable is rotating (commission earned).The cake should be refrigerated once more before removing it off its working platform using an offset spatula.After that, move the cake to a serving tray and decorate it as desired.

METHOD2 Half Sphere Cake Frosting with Your Hand

Occasionally, the most effective instrument for the job is your own hand. In order to properly frost circular and curved cakes, an open palm provides the ideal curvature. Wearing a safety glove will ensure the smoothest finish possible.

How to Make a Full Sphere Cake

  1. Bake two half spheres together to get a whole spherical cake.

While it is not a perfect solution, it is a cost-effective and efficient starting point!
