Make use of your cake decorating equipment to their best capacity and think outside the box when it comes to decorating! The grass icing tip (Wilton 233), also known as the multi-opening piping tip (Wilton 233), may be used to produce a variety of interesting textures and designs.Ten of my favorite ways to utilize a grass icing tip are listed here, although there are undoubtedly many more possibilities. Please share with me any innovative and inventive applications you come up with!
10 creative ways to use a grass icing tip
1. Grass
Image courtesy of Erin Bakes Allow me to state the obvious, but the grass tip is ideal for piping grass, which you got it, is what it’s named after.Getting the grass to appear precisely the way you want it, on the other hand, may not be as evident. The use of buttercream with the proper consistency is essential. They will break if they are too soft, and they will crack if they are too stiff. Before piping straight onto your cake, test the amount of pressure you’ll need to use to produce the desired look on a separate surface. To pipe a tuft of grass on your cake, hold the tip of your pastry bag slightly above the surface of the cake.
Apply pressure to the tip of the cake and immediately release it while lifting the tip up and away from the cake in a straight line with your fingers.
2. Birds’ nests
Image courtesy of Erin Bakes Spring cupcake toppers made of sweet miniature buttercream birds’ nests are the ideal addition to a whimsical buttercream flower arrangement or as a stand-alone decoration. Here’s how it’s done: Create a circle of strands by piling them together.Pipe another circle on top of the previous circle to complete the design.Repeat the process, stacking each time, to build up the sides of the nest.Fill the nest with eggs by piping them in with a round tip or by adding candy eggs or jelly beans.
3. Wreaths
Image courtesy of Erin Bakes A buttercream wreath on top of a cake gives a stunning backdrop for a buttercream flower arrangement, which looks just stunning. In the case of a cake, it may be piped around the bottom to create a charming finishing border for any rustic-chic masterpiece.Make a wreath out of brown pipe cleaners to look like twigs or grapevine.Cakes in white might be made for a wintery event, while cakes in yellow and orange can be made to look like dried grasses or hay for an autumnal party.
4. Yarn
Image courtesy of Erin Bakes Create the most lovely ball of yarn cupcakes anybody in your knitting circle has ever seen by using a grass tip.In order to give realism and texture to your yarn, fill a piping bag halfway with a mixture of white and colored buttercreams.Cover the whole surface of the cupcake with strands that are all oriented in the same direction as the cupcake.Make a second layer of strands and pipe them over the middle of the cupcake, going in the other way.Leave the piped ends of the previous layer visible between layers.
5. Noodles
Image courtesy of jandunlev93522.Using a grass tip, you can whip up loads of noodles or mountains of spaghetti in no time.Maintaining control of the bag while piping lengthy strands of spaghetti Allow the noodles to collapse as you relieve the strain on the bag and take it away from the cake.Springy ramen noodles are created by moving the tip back and forth or in a swirling motion with the pen.
6. Fur or hair
Image courtesy of Lyndsay Sung Fur or hair is perhaps the second most typical application for the grass icing tip, behind grass. Line your tufts carefully in rows, as Lyndsay Sung, a Bluprint teacher, did for a clean buttercream fur coat. Alternatively, pipe tufts at random and let the ends fall where they may for a more wild, woolly look.
7. Flower centers
Image courtesy of Erin Bakes Buttercream flowers have returned to fashion!(Was it even true that they were out?) Making use of a grass tip while piping the center or stamen of buttercream flowers is a simple yet effective technique to add depth and texture to your creations.Pipe a dollop of yellow or green buttercream onto the top of the mound, just like you would to start most buttercream flowers (as seen above). Then pipe strands of yellow or green buttercream onto the top of the mound.Leave the stamens exposed by piping petals around the center of the flower.
8. Craspedia (billy balls)
Start with the step for the center of the flower if you want to make a quick and easy buttercream filler flower (above).Instead of piping blossoms around the edge of the mound of buttercream, pipe yellow strands all the way around the edge.To fill up the spaces left by bigger flowers on a cake, pipe billy balls right onto the cake or pipe them ahead of time and freeze before arranging them on your cake (optional).
9. Pine needles
Images courtesy of Erin Bakes A grass tip makes short work of piping pine needles, which would otherwise take a long time.Utilize a bit more pressure on the piping bag than you would normally use while piping grass in order to ensure that your needles remain straight rather of flipping over.It is feasible to construct a Christmas tree cake centerpiece in a fraction of the time it would take with fondant or gum paste by using a grass tip to pipe pine branches. If you’re making a camping or nature-themed cake, pipe pine tufts right onto the edges of a typical round or square cake to create an evergreen forest backdrop.
10. Borders and textures
- Image courtesy of Erin Bakes However, in addition to the extremely particular applications listed above, the grass tip may be used to create intriguing textures and borders (as shown above from left to right) by combining many different types of grass. When you want to pipe a basketweave on the sides of a cake to give it a loosely woven look, try using a grass tip next time
- Create a braided border around the top or bottom edge of a cake by piping crisscrossing lines around the edge. It would be the great finishing touch to a nautical design if it were painted white. A buttercream braid in a variety of hair color tones would look fantastic on a Tangled-themed cake
- Making use of a grass tip can give a contemporary twist to the classic shell border
- Drop flowers and daisy chains may be piped onto the cake by holding the tip near to the surface of the cake.
- Sugar pearls can be used to complete the daisies’ centers if they are black or white.
- Create a beautiful squiggly streamer border around the cake by wriggling the tip of the piping bag swiftly back and forth as you work your way around it.
Piped Buttercream Roses
These piped flowers are simple to make and require little time. In addition, they are pretty huge, which means you can use them to cover a whole cake and make a fashionable modern design in a short amount of time. When making the buttercream, it should be soft and creamy so that it can be piped easily.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
The key to successfully creating these flowers is to use the proper piping nozzle (tip). You’ll need a big open star piping nozzle for this project. The Wilton 1M is the model that I utilized in this example. Place the nozzle into a large piping bag and fill the bag with your desired color of buttercream before closing the bag tightly.
Step 2
Using a pipe cleaner, start at the center of the rose and pipe in ever increasing rings until you achieve the size you desire. You should be able to complete a full rose in a single sitting.
Step 3
To stop the flow of icing, gently insert the tip of the piping nozzle into the buttercream and gently peel the nozzle away from the buttercream.
Step 4
Pull the piping nozzle away from the buttercream after gently poking the tip into it to stop the frosting from flowing.
Step 5
For big cakes, begin by pipering flowers around the base of the cake, which should be buttercreamed, and working your way up from there.
Step 6
Place a second layer of roses on top of the first layer.
Step 7
Continue until the cake has been completely coated. Simply pipe a star into the spaces between some of the roses if you see any little or ugly gaps between the flowers. Poke the icing nozzle into the area, squeeze a small amount of icing out of the bag, then relax the pressure and peel the bag out from the gap.
Muffin WrappersTo create easy foliage around your rose cupcakes, stand each cupcake in a couple of green coloured tulip muffin wrappers. “Glue” the cake in place with a dab of buttercream if necessary.
Piped Rose 2
Another method for quickly and simply creating piped roses is demonstrated here. It is possible to use either buttercream or royal icing for this method.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1
You will need a petal nozzle, which is a piping nozzle with a long tapering tear shaped end, as well as a piping nail to complete this project. A big plastic or metal nail that can be rotated between your fingers as you smoke is known as a ″nail.″ Add your preferred color of buttercream to the nozzle of a piping bag and pipe out your design. To shut the bag, fold the end over a few times.
Step 2
Maintain a nearly horizontal position for the piping bag, with the thin end of the piping nozzle pointing upwards. With your other hand, hold the piping nail in place. Placing the thick end of the piping nozzle in the center of the nail will ensure that the nail is properly sealed. In order to pipe a cone-shaped design, squeeze the bag while twisting the nail at the same time.
Step 3
Squeeze the piping bag to force a small length of buttercream out of the nozzle while twisting the piping nail at the same time to form a flower on the cake. The petal should be able to wrap around the cone halfway. Pull the sack away from you by releasing the pressure on it. Repeat the process on the other side of the cone.
Step 4
Piping petals around the rose with a twisting motion of the nail is a good way to finish it. Increase the size of the rose to the desired level.
Step 5
Using a CLEAN pair of scissors, carefully lift your rose from the nail. Then open the scissors and slip them beneath the rose, lifting the rose off the nail with the scissors. Place the rose on top of the cake without touching it.
How to Make Buttercream White
- The following post was written by Olivia on December 17, 2020 | | This post may contain affiliate links. Please visit my Disclosure Policy for more information. These easy tips and tactics will teach you how to make buttercream seem white. Perfect for wedding cakes, wintery white cakes, and any other occasion where you need a white buttercream base to work from. The use of shortening is the most effective method of obtaining a pure white buttercream. It’s the type of cake you’ll see in most novelty grocery shop displays. Shortening and powdered sugar are used to make this straightforward American buttercream. While most bakers (including me) prefer to use butter instead of shortening in their buttercreams, there are exceptions. Not only does it improve the flavor, but it also improves the texture. To be clear, I have no objections to any buttercream, shortening or not, and I am a secret admirer of the horribly sweet grocery store cakes. If you’re using genuine butter, it’s likely that your finished product will have a yellow color to it. The degree to which something is yellow is determined by a number of elements, which I will discuss below. This is less than ideal for a variety of reasons, including: Sometimes you need a buttercream that is completely white (for wedding cakes, for example).
- When working with yellow buttercream, it’s ideal to start with a white foundation so that the yellow doesn’t tint the other colors (for example, adding blue to a yellow buttercream would result in a green hue).
Things that you can do to avoid your buttercream from becoming too yellow, as well as things that you can do to make your buttercream white or neutralize that yellow tint, will be discussed in today’s post.

How to Make White Buttercream
The following are some tips for making your buttercream whiter: start with a lighter foundation, eliminate color additives (vanilla), and neutralize any yellow pigment that may be left in the buttercream.
Step1 – Choose Your Butter Wisely
Butter comes in a variety of colors, so if you’re searching for a white buttercream, I recommend going for the whitest hue butter you can find.Take, for example, this snapshot from HowDaily, in which they tested the flavor of several types of butter.Isn’t that crazy? The diet of the cow has a significant impact on the color of the butter that is produced.Cows that are fed on grass have a higher concentration of betacarotene in their diet, which results in more yellow butter generated from their milk.Grain-fed cows, on the other hand, lack beta carotene and tend to produce milk that is more pale in color, which makes for more pale butter.
Organic butter will typically have a deeper hue than ordinary butter due to the presence of organic ingredients.More information may be found on this subject here.
Step2 – Whip it Good
This is a simple method for making American-style buttercreams. Before you add the sugar, whip the butter until it is as fluffy as a cloud of dust.Whisk it until it is extremely pale and fluffy, then add the sugar and whip it again. This will assist you in establishing a lighter foundation to work from.If you’re making Italian & Swiss Meringue Buttercream or German Buttercream, you may whisk the butter ahead of time and then fold it into the buttercream.I haven’t done it yet, but it should be beneficial.
At the very least, when all of the butter has been added, give it a really good and lengthy whip to ensure that it is lovely and light and fluffy in texture. The German buttercream, on the other hand, will be more difficult to make since the pastry cream will impart a yellow hue to it as well.Continue reading for more information on how to combat this.
Step3 – Skip the Vanilla
The buttercream will be tinted if you use vanilla or any other colored flavour. If you want to use vanilla, I prefer clear vanilla extract, which is less expensive. It does, however, have a more candy-like artificial flavor to it than the original.Using ordinary vanilla, on the other hand, isn’t a deal-breaker.In case you’ve chosen a lighter butter and beat it well, you may go to the following step to lighten it even further.
Step4 – Neutralize the Yellow
The use of violet color gel in the buttercream helps to balance out the yellow in the frosting.Take a glance at a color wheel and you’ll notice that the colors yellow and purple are on the opposing extremes of the spectrum.A color’s ability to cancel out other colors is enhanced when the colors are at opposing extremes of the spectrum. The reason your hairdresser recommends using purple shampoo on blonde hair is because it is effective! It aids in the removal of those yellow/brassy tones. To remove the yellow hue from buttercream, you only need to add the least amount of violet at the end to make it look more appealing.
My technique is to first dip a toothpick into the color gel, followed by a dip into the frosting. The quantity on the toothpick in the picture above is greater than what I added.I really just swiped the toothpick over the buttercream on the whisk, so I only really used one side of it in the end!Even with a huge quantity of buttercream, this was the case.I’d suggest starting with a smaller amount and gradually increasing the amount as needed.
Cake Tip!
Take cautious not to use too much violet color gel, as your buttercream will become grey from the excess.Allow for a thorough whipping of the frosting, and then check the color.Add additional violet if necessary, but avoid using too much otherwise your frosting may develop a grey/blue/purplish hue as a result of the excess violet. Before and after photos of the same buttercream recipe are shown below: The cake on the left is my Vanilla Cake recipe, which you can get here. For the White Cake on the right, I used a lighter-colored butter and clear vanilla essence, and I finished it off with a few drops of violet food coloring gel.
Step5 – Add Bright White Color Gel
Another fantastic alternative is to use a brilliant white color gel to decorate the icing before baking it.I don’t think this is particularly effective on its alone, but when paired with some of the other recommendations above, it will aid in the creation of a white buttercream.White chocolate ganache, which has a natural yellow hue to it, may be brightened by using the color gels (violet and white), as can be seen in the photo. Please let me know if you find these instructions on How to Make Buttercream White useful. Please inform me of your results if you use these or if you have any other suggestions that have proven successful for you.

How to make edible grass for cakes: 3 sugarpaste techniques!
- Make edible moss, cut grass, and long grass textures for your cakes with this video tutorial and step-by-step guidance from Zoe Burmester, who demonstrates how to create edible moss, cut grass, and long grass textures for your cakes! Edible grass is the ideal backdrop for a cake board with numerous layers. That means it’s quick and easy to make and complements the following cake themes perfectly: Themes such as sports, BBQ, and summer picnics are popular, as as woodland and fairy themes, Easter themes, and sculpted animals.
- Because grass textures are customizable, you may change them up based on the ″scene″ that you are creating.
- A mossy textured grass with brown tones would be ideal for a forest wedding cake, whilst a sports playing field might be less dimpled, greener in color, and even trimmed with white lines painted on the ground (think about a giant tennis or football cake).
- Also consider adding some longer grass for a more natural look by cutting blades of green wafer paper and putting them in little mounds of fondant to create a wilder effect.
- The options for applying edible grass methods are virtually limitless!
- And the greatest part is that you can do them all at home with ingredients you presumably already have on hand.
- Sugar Street Studios’ Zoe Burmester created this piece.

How do I make edible grass?
There are a variety of techniques for creating edible grass, including using piping nozzles with buttercream and royal icing, but in the following short lessons, we’ll focus on sugarpaste approaches that are ideal for both boards and tiers.
Choosing colour for your edible grass
- It is critical to have a vibrant grass color.
- As you probably already know, grass isn’t just green (believe it or not!) and you’ll need to select your colors carefully in order to get a genuine finish.
- Alternatively, you may use a leaf green tone or create your own by mixing green paste with a dollop of yellow and a dash of brown.
- This will provide additional depth and tone to the composition for optimum effect.
How to make edible moss
- Mossy grass is really simple to create and is suitable for a wide variety of cake designs. You will be in need of Green sugarpaste
- a plastic bristle brush or a nail brush – make sure you have a brand new one that has been sterilised in boiling water and dried well before using it for sugarcraft
- a plastic bristle brush or a nail brush
- Broom (optional)
- Dusting brush
- Petals dusts in shades of green and/or brown (optional)
Method
- In order to produce a dimpled texture, push your brush into the sugarpaste and repeat the process
- As soon as the texture has firmed up, lightly dust the surface with green and/or brown petal dusts — this will provide additional depth and accentuate the dimples
- The thicker the sugar paste, the heavier the dimples that can be used to provide texture.

How to make edible grass (cut)
- Shredded dried coconut creates a beautiful grass texture that gives the appearance of a ‘lawn’. Exceptional advice! It is possible to achieve a two-tone look by mixing yellow gel paste with the green. You will be in need of The following ingredients are required: green sugarpaste
- dried, shredded, unsweetened coconut
- green gel paste (Zoe uses Garden Green by Magic Colours)
- yellow gel paste
- a few drops of vodka or revitalizor spirit/dipping solution (optional)
- edible glue.
Exceptional advice! If you’re having trouble getting the color to blend into the coconut, try adding a few drops of alcohol or rejuvenator spirit to smooth the process. Method
- To color the coconut, use green and yellow gel pastes and mix until everything is evenly distributed. Because the gel color you use may be too stiff to work with, you may need to add a drop or two of rejuvenator spirit/dipping solution or vodka to soften it.
- Cover your board or cake with a grass green sugar paste in a mid-tone shade
- Sugar glue should be applied thickly, and then the colored coconut grass should be sprinkled over and pressed into the sugarpaste
- Allow to dry completely and brush off any loose particles

How to make edible grass (long)
- This longer, messier grass texture works particularly well when there are animals or other characters resting on top of it, as shown in the example below. It may also be made to seem more appealing by scattering sugar flowers throughout it. You will be in need of The following items are required: green sugarpaste
- an open star nozzle tip (ideally big)
- an airbrush (optional)
- Pistachio green by Spectrum Flow
- an airbrush.
Method
- Using your nozzle, press the sugarpaste into the sugarpaste at an angle and draw away to give the appearance of grass blades being randomly placed in your application
- To draw attention to the finish, use scissors to gently raise the tips of the hair.
- Leave it as is, or softly run over it with an airbrush to help pick out the blades of grass.
That’s all there is to it… Three different edible grass techniques that may be used on cupcakes, cake boards, wrapped around a cake as a layer, or in any other way you like! How about bringing your grass to life by following along with these sugarpaste flower tutorials?
Minecraft Grass Block Cake without Fondant
- How to construct a Minecraft grass block cake that is simple to make and will not fail.
- Make a simple square cake with buttercream with this recipe guide.
- It’s great for kids and birthdays!
- It’s understandable that my oldest would desire a Minecraft grass block cake for his 11th birthday, which occurred some years ago.
- Especially when you consider how much my three sons and my husband enjoy playing the game together.
- These are the kinds of memories this brings up (he’s now a teenager)…
So, when he asked for a Minecraft-themed birthday cake, I gave it some thought and went through all of the Minecraft cake designs I could find, trying to figure out the best approach to create this cake.Because he requested a grass block, I opted to make the earth section of the block out of chocolate buttercream to match. After that, I made the grass out of standard buttercream frosting, however this time I tinted it green. While creating the grass on the cake is the most time-consuming element of the entire process, it is made incredibly simple with the help of one handy dandy little cake tip.
- The feature of this cake that I most enjoy is…
- In order for it to appear decent, you don’t even have to do anything else to it other than that.
- Because the mud and grass serve as the décor, you won’t even need a cake topper unless you really want one.
- I enjoyed working on it, and it was much more enjoyable to see the pleasure on his face when it was all said and done.
- Related recipes include a Minecraft pig cake and another Minecraft cake that is really simple to make.
- Alternatively, delicious Minecraft cupcakes can be substituted for the cake.

- Scroll down to the bottom of this page for a printable recipe card if you’d prefer to bypass all of my cake decorating suggestions, crucial information for this recipe, and comparable recipe ideas – and instead just get to the Minecraft grass block cake recipe. You’ll need two 10-inch square cake pans for this project since you’ll be making a grass block.
- To decorate the cake, you will set it on a cake board coated in freezer paper after it has been cooked and cooled.
- Spatula for Spreading Icing Between Cake Layers and Around the Outside of the Cake
- Pastry bag – Fill the pastry bag with your icing
- seal the bag and set it aside.
- This tip and coupler from Wilton allows you to make grass out of icing
- however, it is not recommended for use with fondant.
- In the case of a birthday cake, you can decorate it with candles or any other decorations you like.
To Use Fondant or Not to Use Fondant
You’ve come to the correct site if you’re looking for instructions on how to build a Minecraft cake without fondant. This recipe contains almost no fondant at all. Even fondant is a source of contention for me, since it never seems to taste as wonderful as frosting in my experience. Having stated that… Here are some pointers on how to create the most gorgeous grass block cake possible.
Tips for How to Make This Minecraft Cake Recipe
- Prior to beginning the decorating process, you must first bake the cakes and prepare the icing. Make two 10-inch square cakes in a 10-inch square pan (the grass block should be square-shaped). Jacob requested chocolate, so I made two chocolate cake mixes to make the procedure go more smoothly. While the cakes are baking, I made the frosting, which I put together while the cakes were baking. Buttercream frosting and chocolate buttercream frosting are two of my favorite recipes, and I use them both. It’s very delicious
- Important: Make sure to save aside approximately 1 cup of the chocolate buttercream to be used to sandwich the two cakes together. Green food coloring should be added to the standard buttercream frosting until you’re pleased with the hue you’ve obtained.
- When you’re done, break up some Peanut Butter Oreos and mix them in with the chocolate buttercream icing to make the remainder of the frosting seem even more like muck and mud. As a result of this combination, the dirt portion of the grass block has the ideal texture.
- The cakes should be placed on a square cake board that has been covered in white freezer paper once they have cooled. An optional step is to chop the cakes’ rounded tops off with a cake slicer/leveller after they have cooled. This makes the cakes have a flatter shape and is easier to design as a result of this technique.
- Spread the bit of chocolate buttercream frosting that was kept on top of one of the cakes. Then sandwich the two cakes together using a spatula.
Spread the chocolate buttercream ″soil″ frosting along the sides of the cake, working your way around the perimeter. It’s fine if your dirt appears a little sloppy; this just adds to the authenticity of your dirt’s appearance.
