    1. Knowing how to manufacture number cake toppers is a talent that has come in handy several times throughout the course of my life.
    2. They’re really necessary for birthday cakes and big anniversaries, and I even made some to ring in the New Year in 2020 (which, by the way, is a very happy New Year!).
    3. They only take approximately 20 minutes from start to finish, which is perfect for those last-minute occasions when you need a cake topper that is both professional and entertaining.
    4. They’re almost certainly going to make your cakes a bit more cheerful!
    • I chose Wilton Candy Melts as the basis for these brightly colored number cake toppers, but you could use any tempered chocolate as a base, and the method would be the same as with the Wilton Candy Melts base.
    • This technique is very useful since it allows you to produce numbers (or characters) in whatever typeface you like!
    • You may just print out your favorite number design onto printer paper, place a sheet of wax paper over the top, then pipe Candy Melts or chocolate on top of the wax paper.
    • Finish it up with your favorite sprinkles and you’re ready to eat.

    You Will Need:

    Step 1: Pipe the Number with Candy Melts

    1. Melt the Wilton Candy Melts according to the package directions, then transfer them to a piping bag with a small aperture (approximately 1/8 inch) and snip a small hole in the corner.
    2. Place your printed number template (facing up) on a level surface and cover it with a layer of wax paper to prevent it from being damaged.
    3. Fill in the middle of your number with melted Candy Melts after you’ve piped the outline of it with them.

    Step 2: Cover with Your Favorite Sprinkles

    1. Sprinkle lavishly over the whole surface of the Candy Melts while they are still wet, carefully pushing them into the number without spreading the Candy Melts outside of the lines.
    2. While the Candy Melts are still wet, scatter the sprinkles generously over the entire surface of the cake.
    3. When the surface has been evenly dusted, place the number in the refrigerator for approximately 10 minutes to let it to set.

    Step 3: Turn it Into a Cake Topper

    1. After the sprinkled number has been set, carefully peel it away from the wax paper backing and lay it face down on a flat surface.
    2. Placing a bamboo skewer in the rear and covering it with extra melted Candy Melts will complete the look.
    3. Allow for a further 10 minutes of setting time before returning the sprinkling number to the refrigerator (with the bamboo skewer still attached).
    4. And there you have it, a festive and colorful scattered number topper: : These scattered number cake toppers are the perfect way to finish off a cake and they are completely edible (minus the skewer, of course).
    • Furthermore, you can use the same procedures to create letter cake toppers in whatever font you like!

    How to Make Glitter Cake Topper Numbers

    1. To begin, cut out two sets of numbers from the sheet of paper.
    2. I used my Cricut Explore to make sure that all of the numerals were the same size as one another.
    3. There will be two sets required since one set will be used for the front and the other for the rear.
    4. Remember which number is on the front and which number is on the back, then adorn the front of each side to indicate which number is on each side.
    • For the reverse of the numerals, squeeze a huge dollop of the glitter glue onto the number and spread it around the paper with a paintbrush to create a textured effect.
    • They will curl somewhat while wet, but they will level out after they have been allowed to air-dry.
    • Apply a thicker layer of glitter glue to the front numerals and push the sequins into the glue to create the numbers.
    • Making smaller areas at a time while adding the sequins was more convenient for me so that the glitter glue didn’t dry before I could finish it.
    • Remove the numbers off the table and set them aside to dry.

    How to Make and Design Printable Cupcake Toppers

    • Creating and designing cupcake toppers is possible even if you have no prior graphic design skills. This article will teach you how to design printable cupcake toppers and cake toppers step-by-step using Adobe Illustrator. There are even free applications available to assist you in your endeavor! Several individuals have approached me with the request that I create a lesson on how to design the printable toppers that are available on my website. It’s much simpler than you may imagine, and you don’t need to be a graphic designer to do it. These are a simple way to customize cupcakes for occasions such as birthdays, baby showers, wedding showers, festivals, and other celebrations. (This post was revised on October 9, 21.)     What programs can I use?

    Canva:

    Canva is the program I’m using for this lesson since it’s simple to use and it’s completely free for the most basic functions. Depending on the graphics you want to use in your design, it might cost you a couple of bucks, but there are many free graphics available, and you can even submit your own images.

    PicMonkey:

    PicMonkey is a visual design tool that is extremely similar to Canva in terms of functionality. It’s simple to use and understand, and it does include several features that Canva does not provide. The only drawback is that it is not provided for free.

    Photoshop:

    1. Photographic software such as Photoshop is also available; but, it has a steep learning curve if you don’t have any prior design knowledge.
    2. There is also a monthly subscription for using the cloud-based version.
    3. You might always use a design application such as Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or another.
    4. Those programs, on the other hand, are more expensive, and some have a steeper learning curve.
    • Canva or Photoshop are the programs I use the most of the time since they are familiar to me and provide a comfortable user experience.
    • Canva will be used for this guide since it is less complicated to learn than Photoshop and because it is currently free to use at the time of this publication.

    Where can I find graphics?

    • There is one very crucial point to make concerning graphics. If you simply copy and paste any old graphic from a Google search, you are most likely infringing on someone’s intellectual property rights. While it may not appear to be a huge problem, take it from someone who has had their images taken and used without their permission: it is a very bad thing to do in my opinion. Check to see that the photographs or graphics you use are royalty-free or that you are not infringing on someone’s intellectual property rights before you use them. You may accomplish this by conducting a search for ‘royalty-free’ graphics or by selecting one of the choices listed below. It’s important to note that some of Canva’s designs are free to use, while others may need a little fee of one or two dollars. There are some fantastic graphics on the other websites, but you’ll have to pay to download them from the other sites. Canva, Creative Market, The Hungryjpeg, and more.

    What kind of paper should I print these on?

    You’ll want to use cardstock paper, which is just a little bit heavier than your typical printer paper, for this project.

    Do I have to use a hole punch to cut these out?

    The use of a hole punch makes the process of punching out the cupcake toppers much simpler and faster. If you don’t have one and are unable to obtain one, you may always use scissors instead… It’ll simply take a little longer. Let’s get started with the video lesson.     1. A cake topper with a standing number can be used as a cake decoration on its own.
    2. The majority of the time, the numbers are used to indicate the age of a birthday person, or if they are used on an anniversary cake, the numbers are used to reflect the years that have passed since the anniversary.
    3. It was for a birthday cake that I constructed this standing number cake topper.
    4. Butterfly and flower themed cakes were created for a young girl’s eighth birthday celebration.
    • It was a two-tiered cake, and the 3D number topper, which was coated in glitter dust, brought a startlingly beautiful finishing touch to the design.

    How to Make Standing Number Cake Topper

    These were the main supplies I used to make the upright standing 3D number cake topper:

    • To build the number ″8,″ I used Satin Ice white fondant. CMC powder is a powder that may be added to fondant to make it tougher to work with as it is drying. This powder has a similar impact to tylose powder in terms of its effect. For this number topper craft, I used around 1 1/4 teaspoons of sugar
    • I utilized a number ″8″ template since I was building a number ″8″ topper, and I wanted to make it look as professional as possible. In the end, I printed out the lettering using a Microsoft Word font that I had expanded on my computer to meet the size I desired.
    • Picks made of wood – I used two picks for this number. Each one was affixed to the bottom of the number in order to keep it standing erect on the cake.
    • Colored gel paste – I used Americolor gel color in Electric Purple for my project. A small amount of water was added to the paint before it was placed on the top
    • Glitter dust – I chose purple glitter for this craft since it was appropriate.

    And this was how I made the topper from start to end:

    The template

    First and foremost, I designed the template. Because I was making number ″8,″ I printed it on a sheet of paper from Microsoft Word (using the outline mode so that I didn’t waste any printer ink) and made sure that the template was the exact size that I desired for the cake.

    • I then cut the template out following its outline.

    Once the template was complete, I began working on the fondant. I kneaded it thoroughly after adding the CMC powder. Afterwards, I rolled it out to the thickness that I desired for the number to be.

    I traced my pattern onto the rolled fondant and cut out the fondant in the form of the number using a pastry cutter.

    In order to smooth off the edges all around the cutout, I utilized my modelling tool.

    Following that, I fitted the wooden picks into the bottom of the topper in the following manner:

    Painting the topper

    Then I went ahead and painted the topper. I painted the number with Americolor ″electric purple,″ which I slightly dilute in water before painting it all over. Because the paint will ultimately be covered with glitter dust, it is not necessary to apply it in an equal layer at this time.

    After I had painted the number on the front, back, and sides, I dusted the glitter dust all over the top of the design. This was accomplished by writing the number on a piece of paper and liberally sprinkling dust all over the top of the cake.

    I next use a spatula to spread the dust evenly across the surface of the fondant number, making sure that the entire surface is coated with the dust. I then went back to the front of the number topper and repeated the process there.

    I used a spatula to remove and disperse the extra dust that had accumulated in and around the topper, ensuring that no fondant spots could be seen on the edge of the cake.

    As soon as it was totally dry, I softly tapped it on the paper to remove any loose or extra dust, and then punched a hole in the center of my cake to place the topper. And I re-bottled the leftovers so that I may use them for other cake decorating tasks in the future.

    DIY Glittered Number Cake Topper

    • This year, one of my dearest girlfriends turned 40 years old. We created decorations and centerpieces for her celebration and placed an order for a cake. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to get the ideal cake topper for her, and I was forced to build one myself. My mind was already made up that I wanted giant sparkly numerals, so I headed to the craft store. Here’s how I created this DIY glittery number cake topper with sparkly numbers. Time allotted: 15-20 minutes (without drying time) Materials: We wanted something huge and dazzling, so I went to Hobby Lobby and discovered 5″ pre-cut unfinished wooden numerals that were the ideal size. Gluing craft sticks to the backs of the numbers was the first thing I did after getting them out of the box. In order for the glitter to adhere properly, I let each side to dry completely before moving on. After the numbers have dried, spray clear glaze over the top of the cake to prevent the glitter from dropping all over the surface. Krylon’s Clear Glaze in an aerosol can comes highly recommended. It is important to spray outside in an open, well-ventilated environment. Rockwell’s Bakery created a gorgeous two-tiered circular cake for us to celebrate our wedding. The first layer was made up of black and white stripes, while the last layer was made up of gold. The numerals were painted in teal, which happened to be the birthday girl’s favorite color.     How to Make Fondant Number Cake Toppers

    • Today I’m going to teach you how to make Fondant Number Cake Toppers, which you might find interesting. It seems to me as I write this, after spending the whole morning tinkering with photographs, that my collage on the right may be deceiving. I’m not going to go into detail about how I made each and every one of those tops. That would make for a very lengthy blog entry. My demonstration will be on how I created the numbers for a School Spirit Basketball Birthday cake for my son. And then I’m going to give you a few pointers on how to come up with the rest of the figures, with the goal that you’ll be able to work it out on your own. As is usually the case. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a comment and I will respond as soon as possible! Here are some items you *might* need depending on the numbers you’re working with (I’m not included everything in the photo, obviously!): Fondant and Tylose – If you are using fondant (homemade or purchased), you must add Tylose or something similar (to aid in the hardening of the numerals!)     • OR Gum paste can be used for the fondant and the tylose in this recipe. I prefer Satin Ice Gum Paste, but Wilton works just as well
    • Wires, Lollipop Sticks, Craft Sticks, Wooden Skewers, Coffee Straws, and other similar items have all been used to hold numbers in place inside or on the back of them
    • Satin Ice Gum Paste is my preferred choice, but Wilton also works well

    • Sugar Glue, Xacto Knife, and a little rolling pin are all useful tools.

    On this day, I’m going to demonstrate two different techniques of producing the numbers 1 and 3 that I employ.Let’s get this party started.I’m going to start with the number ″1.″ 1.

    Prepare the fondant: I’m using fondant today to match the cake, so I started by kneading 2-3 tsp.(up to 1 tablespoon) of tylose into around 1 pound of fondant, kneading until smooth.Basically, I simply slightly flatten the ball before evenly sprinkling the tylose on top of it before rolling it up and kneading it for a couple of minutes.Step 2: Take a tiny portion of the fondant ball and roll it out into a rope or snake about 6-8 inches long and a bit larger around than my pinky finger.

    Repeat with the remaining fondant ball.Note: I prefer my numbers to be in the neighborhood of three ″imposing in stature.Step 3: Cut a 5-foot segment of rope from the main rope ″long, then roll one end to a dull point, and repeat.Step 4: Roll it down into a curl and fix it with a small amount of sugar glue.

    • Step 5: Trim away any excess length, leaving it a bit shorter than you would like the full size ″1″ to be (since you will be adding a bottom to it).
    • Step 6: Using the remaining end of the rope or rolling out additional rope, prepare to construct the base of the ″1″ on which it will stand.
    • I laid out a rope and tapered the ends on both ends of the rope.
    1. The bottom section of the ″1″ should be flat (see the top middle photo in the collage up there), so don’t taper the ends as I mentioned in step 6, but rather cut straight ends instead of tapering them.
    2. Alternatively, curly ends might be added to the bottom pieces.
    3. Additionally, you will require the ends to be rolled to a taper.

    Once it’s been rolled, you’ll need to curl the ends and glue them together (roll one end up, the other end down).The top portion of the ″1″ will need to be trimmed at an angle in order for it to fit into the bottom portion of the ″1.″ Take a look at this: Step 9: Now grab a lollipop stick and put it through the bottom and top halves of the one you made before.For numbers that have a straight line (such as 1, 4, 7, and 9) I recommend using lollipop sticks since they are quite durable!Step 10: Attach the two pieces together with a small amount of sugar glue.

    Using your fingers, gently slide them together and smooth out any creases.Remove it from the water and let it to dry.For the time being, because I required a ″13″ to place on top of the School Spirit Cake, I’ll make a ″3.″ The next step is to roll out a long piece of fondant rope, maybe 10 inches in length.The length of this section will vary based on the numbers you’re creating.It’ll simply take a little trial and error to find the right size for you!

    Using one end, roll it to a point or taper, and then curl it down for the top of the ″3.″ Stage 14: I don’t have any pictures of this step, but you’ll be forming a ″3″ shape with the bottom end remaining flat.The number ″3″ should be formed by comparing it to the ″1″ (or whatever height you want your ″3″ to be).Once you’ve determined how long the rope has to be in order to make the number, straighten it out again and cut the rope, leaving an extra inch or two on either side.

    1. Curl the flat end and attach it to the tip, then reconstruct the flat end into the three-dimensional shape.
    2. Step 15: Because the ″3″ does not have any straight sides, we are unable to employ a lollipop.
    3. Instead, I’m going to use a floral wire to hold everything together.
    4. Then, using a wire, bend the ″3″ into the desired form.
    • It is not required for the wire to follow the whole form of the number, but I prefer to go at least halfway around every number I am working on.
    • When using fondant (or gum paste), the number will dry and keep its shape as long as there is enough tylose in the mixture.
    • 16th step: Lift the wire up and put some sugar glue below it before laying it down and painting some glue on top of it as well.
    • Roll out a little rope of fondant and flatten it with a rolling pin to finish the project in step 17.
    • To finish off Step 18, measure the length of wire you’ll need to completely cover and place it directly on top of the wet glue region on the 3.
    • Step 19: Allow them to AIR DRY!
    • For numbers like these, I prefer to make them at least 2-3 days in advance.
    • To dry the numbers, I spread some tylose powder onto a cookie sheet and place them on top of it (facing up) before placing them in the oven.
    • This keeps them hidden and out of the way while they work.
    • Just be careful not to mistakenly fry them.
    • That’s something I’ve done as well!
    • Putting the lollipops on the cake is as simple as sticking them right into the cake at the end of Step 20.
    • For wire numbers, I propose inserting the wire first into the cake via a coffee straw (cut to length) and then back into the cake through the coffee straw.

    3 – Created in the same manner as the instruction.40 – For the ″4″, I used a lollipop stick, and for the ″0,″ I utilized two pieces of wire.At the bottom, I twisted them together after bending one to curve up each side and bringing them together in the centre at the bottom.A wire would have been better than glue for this number, which was placed to the side of the cake since I wanted it to stand up.6 – Completed with the use of a wire 7 – Completed with the use of a wire 8 – Gum paste is flattened out flat and cut out using a cookie cutter to form the number ″8.″ After that, I drew stripes on top of it to match the cake and cut them off.

    On the rear, I used two wires to hold everything together.9 – Glued to the side of the box.It would be possible to use a lollipop stick to form a straight ″9,″ but a wire would be required if the ″9″ was curved.I hope this tutorial has been of use in getting you started in crafting number toppers.

    • To make the rope, I tapered both ends at the beginning and the end of the rope.
    • The bottom section of the ″1″ should be flat (see the top middle photo in the collage up there), so don’t taper the ends as I mentioned in step 6, but rather cut straight ends instead of the tapered ends.

    Alternatively, curly ends might be added to the bottom portions.In addition, the ends must be tapered to a point.Then you’ll curl the ends up and glue them together after it’s been rolled (roll one end up, the other end down).

    The top section of the ″1″ will need to be trimmed at an angle in order to fit into the bottom part of the ″1.″ Take a look at this link: Now, take a lollipop stick and insert it into the bottom and top of the one you just made.Step 9: Use lollipop sticks instead of pencils for numbers that have a straight line (such as 1, 4, 7, and 9) since they are much more durable.Attach the two pieces together with a dab of sugar glue in step 10.Step 11: Slide them together and smooth out any creases that may have occurred.Remove it from the water and let it dry.

    Now, because I wanted a ″13″ for the top of the School Spirit Cake, I’m going to make a ″3″ instead.The next step is to roll out a long piece of fondant rope – approximately 10 inches in length.Which numbers you choose to use will determine how long this section is.The only way to achieve the right size is to experiment and see what works!Using one end, roll it to a point or taper, and then curl it down for the top of the ″3″.

    In this phase, you will build a ″3″ shape with the bottom end remaining flat.I don’t have any pictures of this step.The number ″3″ should be formed by comparing it to the ″1″ (or whatever height you choose your ″3″ to be).Once you’ve determined how long the rope has to be in order to make the number, straighten it out again and cut the rope, leaving an extra inch or two on either end.Curl the flat end and attach it to the tip, then roll the flat end into the three shapes.A lollipop will not work since the ″3″ does not have any straight sides.

    A flowery wire will be used instead, as I’ve already said.Then, using a wire, bend the ″3″ into the desired form.It is not required for the wire to follow the whole form of the number, but I prefer to go at least halfway around any number I am working with.In the event that you have enough tylose in your fondant (or if you are using gum paste), the number will dry and maintain its form.Step 16: Obtaining a legal opinion on a matter of public importance.

    Elevate it up and apply some sugar glue below it before laying it down and painting some more glue on top of it.Make a little rope of fondant and flatten it with a rolling pin to finish the project.To finish off Step 18, measure the length of wire you’ll need to completely cover and put it directly on top of the wet glue region on the 3.19.Allow them to dry completely!

    • For numbers like these, I prefer to make them at least 2-3 days ahead of time.
    • To dry the numbers, I spread some tylose powder onto a cookie sheet and place them on top of it (facing up) before placing them in my oven.
    • Because of this, they remain obscured and out of sight.
    • Just make sure you don’t overcook them accidently!
    • That is something I have done as well.

    In Step 20, you may stick the lollipops right into a cake if you’re ready to put them on top of it.For wire numbers, I propose inserting the wire first into the cake via a coffee straw (cut to length) and then back through the straw.To see how I accomplish this, please refer to my post, How to Put Stars on Wires for Cake, which is located here.

    • It might be possible to use a lollipop stick to produce a straight ″9,″ but a wire would be required if you wanted it bent.

    How to Make a Number Topper for a Stand-Up Show A gum paste or fondant stand-up number topper is one edible embellishment that every cake decorator should be familiar with.They are one of the most often requested edible decorative components for birthday cakes, and they are quite simple to prepare!And incorporating them into a birthday cake gives it that that unique, personalized touch that everyone loves.Simply follow along with this simple guide to learn how to build them yourself!To get started on this project, I prefer to print out the numbers in the size that will be needed for the cake I am making.

    1. Using masking tape, secure the sheet with your printed numbers to a level surface (I’m using a tray to make it easier to transport my numbers to a spot where they can dry undisturbed).
    2. These numbers will serve as a reference to ensure that each of the gumpaste numbers are the same size and form as the other.
    3. After that, tape a piece of nonstick translucent paper over the sheet with the printed numbers and allow it to dry completely.

    I’m using a piece of wax paper for this.In order to make our number, we must first estimate how long a piece of gum paste/fondant will be required to complete the task.If you’re using a number that would be difficult to measure (such as a ″6″), trace around the number with a piece of string before cutting it to size.

    • Following that, arrange your string on your work surface.
    • Cornstarch should be used to dust the work surface.
    • Once the fondant/gum paste combination is in a very thick noodle (or snake) form and is the required thickness, roll it between your palms until it is in the correct shape and thickness.

    Using your index finger, gently roll the end of your fondant numbers until it gets thinner and forms a point on the ends.If you want the ends of your fondant numbers to be thinner and come to a point, trim your fondant snake slightly shorter than the length of the string.Make sure the end result is the same length as the string guide you used to create it.

    Keep in mind that you are not need to use a 50 percent fondant and 50 percent gum paste combination.If you are solely working with fondant, simply knead a small amount of tylose powder into the fondant to aid in drying.Alternatively, if you need your numbers to dry rapidly, 100 percent gum paste can be used.It’s time to give our number some structure.Grasp your fondant ″snake″ and place it on the nonstick paper that has been placed over your number guide.

    Form the fondant into the shape of a number.Feel free to decorate the ends of the fondant snake with whichever swirls you choose.You may dress it up as you like!If your gum paste number has an end that connects back to the number, wet a tiny paintbrush and paint the area where the two pieces meet with a little layer of water.When it dries, the water will aid in ensuring that the pieces remain attached to one another.

    Finally, it’s time to provide the structural support that will let your numbers stand out!Bamboo skewers are a favorite of mine.I just required one skewer, which I broke in half, to make these miniature figures.Each half was more than adequate to support these two numbers on their respective halves.Before placing the skewers into the numbers, trim them to the length that will be required for your project.Make careful to wet the end of your skewer before using it to guarantee that the gum paste will adhere to the skewer properly.

    Allow for complete drying of the gum paste numbers, which will vary according on the temperature and humidity levels in the air.It took approximately a day and a half for my numbers to completely dry.Please keep in mind that if you are in a hurry and need your topper to dry fast, you may set your numbers in your oven, close the oven door, and turn on only the oven light (do not turn on the heat!) and leave them to dry.Depending on their size, they may dry in a couple of hours or overnight, depending on the weather.Notification: If your bamboo skewer does not adhere to your number topper for whatever reason, simply prepare a paste with a little gum paste and a little water and use just a small piece of it on the end of your skewer to glue it to the number.

    Instructions: Use a broad soft brush to gently brush away any extra cornstarch from your number topper once it has dried completely.I wanted to include a little glitz and glam into my topper.I wanted to add some white disco dust glitter to my numbers, so I used white disco dust glitter.In order to do this, I lightly brushed a small quantity of water over my numerals (you could use a steamer if you own one).This will make the surface of your numbers sticky, allowing you to adhere whatever glitter or shimmer dusts you choose to apply to the surface of your numbers.

    • Then I sprinkled a little Disco Dust onto the moist surface and used skewers to put my numbers into the cake, which helped to keep the cake from falling apart.
    • That’s all there is to it!

    Tutorial – How to make Cupcake Toppers

    • In this tutorial, I’ll demonstrate the process of creating cupcake toppers for your next celebration. Two-inch party circles are included in each of my customizable party packs, on a page (or two) every pack. These party circles are ideal for use in the creation of Cupcake Toppers! What you’ll need to get started I recommend printing on bright white cardstock or heavyweight matte photo paper if you want to make your own unique party circles.
    • Scissors (or a paper trimmer) are required.
    • I use a 2 inch round punch (Fiskars 2 inch circular punch) or a 2 inch scallop punch for this project.
    • Toothpicks (or lollipop sticks)
    • glue or double-sided tape
    • and a pair of scissors.

    To begin, cut out each row of the patterns one at a time.If you don’t have a 2 inch round punch at this stage, you may just cut out each of the squares and use them as Cupcake Toppers instead.If you do have a 2 inch punch, place your paper so that the pattern is exactly in the center of your punch and punch out your 2 inch circle using your punching machine.After that, cut a blank circle from a piece of plain paper.This will be used to attach your Cupcake Topper on the back of the cupcake (to hide the toothpick).

    1. Turn the customised circle that you’ve filled out over.
    2. Attach the toothpick to the back of your customized circle with glue (or double-sided tape if you’re feeling fancy).
    3. Attach the blank circle to the top of the toothpick in order to conceal the toothpick.

    And now your personalized Cupcake Topper is ready to be placed on top of a frosted cupcake to serve!
