Which Grocery Store Has the Best Cakes? (by price, type & event)
It is almost impossible to avoid purchasing a cake from the grocery store at least a few times a year for almost everyone on the world. However, with so many possibilities, I began to question which grocery shop had the finest selection of cupcakes. What I learned on my tasting tour is as follows: Which supermarket has the finest selection of cakes?Walmart’s free smash cake option is a terrific choice for a child’s first birthday celebration.Costco is a fantastic option for huge groups and tight budgets.Target has a large selection of character-licensed cakes that are appropriate for children ages 5 to 10.
- Whole Foods Market, on the other hand, takes first place in terms of overall quality, flavor, and ingredients.
- However, this is only a snapshot in time.
- Some people are simply concerned with the flavor or texture of food.
- Others choose a vegan cake, a cake that is free of GMOs, or even a cake that is entirely organic.
- As a result, the term ″best″ might be quite subjective.
- Birthdays, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, graduations, and weddings are all occasions to celebrate.
- All of these festivals have one thing: they are all centered on food.
- It’s juicy, it’s sweet, and it’s just amazing.
- It’s a piece of cake.
- However, it is possible that you will not have enough time to prepare a cake, especially if you are in charge of preparing the party.
Your celebration should be memorable, though, and there are several grocery stores that provide wonderful cake options for your celebrations. So, which grocery has the finest cake, and where can you find it?You’ll have to keep reading to find out. It’s time to spread the word about this classic Cake Wrecks photo of grocery store cakes gone bad. When writing on cakes that are intended to be served at a Super Bowl celebration, extreme caution must be exercised.

Which supermarket does the best birthday cakes?
Even while we all know that handmade cake is the greatest, there are occasions when it is simply not possible. In certain cases, buying something from a local bakery might be even better than making it yourself. However, if you do not have access to a local bakery, supermarkets may be found all over the area. There’s a good chance that your neighborhood grocer carries cakes. Some establishments even bake them in-house.However, once again, the term ″best″ is subjective and depends on who the cake is intended for.
- As we’ll discuss more below, the most important thing about a child’s first birthday is that the parents have a good time, not the quality of the cake.
- Walmart takes the cake in this category since they will provide you with a free smash cake if you spend at least $15 dollars there.
- For kids aged 5-10, Target wins since they provide a large number of licensed character cakes (after all, who doesn’t want to hear a group of youngsters yelling ″Let it Go?″) However, not all sites are equipped with a bakery.
- It’s difficult to match Costco when it comes to size and affordability for a large gathering (for example, a work party).
- However, if what you’re looking for is a very high-quality cake produced from high-quality ingredients, Whole Foods Market is virtually tough to surpass.
Are Walmart cakes good?
- If you’re arranging a children’s birthday party, Walmart is unquestionably the best place to shop. Walmart is a great place to get your gifts, party materials, decorations, and, yes, even your cake. Talk about being in a handy location! I’m not sure how delicious their cakes are. Although the term ″good″ is very subjective, I’m going to assume that we can all agree that moist cakes are preferable than dry cakes for the sake of clarity. Let’s also assume that the icing that causes your teeth to pain is excessively sweet. Walmart does not provide a very diverse range of cake flavors. The following items are often found in most stores: White cake, chocolate cake, marble cake, and more variations are available.
Yellow cake may be found at ″select″ grocery shops.(source) The most massive portions of cake may be found in this grocery shop photograph.twitter.com/z9LsDu1CUw — Lizzie West (@Limeylizzie) on Twitter The 9th of January, 2020 I saw numerous reviews of Walmart cakes with themes that are comparable to mine.Reviewers have complained that they do not have a large range of cakes and that the cakes sometimes do not appear how they should.(source) I often find the icing to be too sugary, but the cake itself is delicious and delectable in my opinion.Walmart’s cakes are also quite reasonably priced, which is a nice plus.
- The same as almost everything else available at Walmart.com.
- Because Walmart is likely to be a decent choice if you aren’t searching for anything extravagant and simply want an economical cake.
- With a cake purchase of at least $15 and a free ″smash″ cake for your child’s first birthday, they will even offer you a free ″smash″ cake.
- A smash cake is a cake that is made expressly for the birthday boy or girl to smash and play in, rather than spreading their little germs all over the huge birthday cake.
- When your new 1-year-old is digging into their very own cake, it’s actually rather entertaining to watch.

Does Walmart bake their own cakes?
Unfortunately, no.Pillsbury sheet cakes are delivered frozen to Walmart stores.Their round cakes are supplied by Best Brands, which is situated in Minnesota.(source) As a result, if you enjoy Pillsbury items, including their boxed cake mix, you’ll probably enjoy Walmart’s cakes as well.As long as it is not objectionable, they will try their best to tailor it to your specifications. They will also write anything you want on it if you ask them to.
- But don’t go overboard with the glitz.
- Walmart is known for offering low-cost items and low labor expenses.
- There’s a good chance you won’t find a competent cake decorator on the payroll.
- Fascinating fact: A Costco sheet cake may be easily transported in an IKEA shopping bag.
- It’s a form of holy geometry.
- pic.twitter.com/xBdtcxNMWL — Lori Dziurda (@LDZbranch) will be celebrating her birthday on May 1, 2020.
What kind of cakes does Costco have?
Only two types of cake are available at Costco: white and chocolate. The white cake is layered with a cheesecake mousse filling on the inside. The chocolate cake has a chocolate mousse filling in the center. When it comes to decorating, they have a limited selection of possibilities. The flower possibilities are many, as are the sports themes and a few general children’s theme options.Of course, they’ll write on it for you as well if you want it.
- The important thing to remember is that value is important.
- Costco cakes are enormous and quite reasonably priced.
- With a price tag of less than $20, their half sheet cake weights an impressive nine and a half pounds and feeds 48 people!
- (source) Costco cakes are an excellent choice if you are serving a big number of people and want a simple cake.
- And, of course, Costco’s cakes are really delectable!
- In addition to your cake, you might want to consider picking up a rotisserie chicken while you’re in Costco.
- They provide rotisserie chickens that are large and tasty.
- At $4.99 apiece, you can get a lot of them.
- In fact, according to a recent report, Costco was voted the greatest rotisserie chicken in the US based on price and taste.
- There, I discuss not just who has the finest chicken, but also which chicken brands are the best to buy while shopping for chicken.
And if additives, hormones, and antibiotics are essential to you as well, I take it into consideration when determining the rankings. To read it on my website, simply click on the link. It’s difficult to beat Costco cake.Thank you very much for your birthday greetings, everyone!pic.twitter.com/qaJKScv4y4 — Matt Whitlock (@mattdizwhitlock) on Twitter, June 9, 2019
What does Costco cake taste like?
- The majority of folks adore Costco cakes! They have a light, delicate taste, and the icing and filling are made from a light mousse. In contrast to a standard frosting, the mousse is extremely light and not too sweet in flavor. When the icing is overly thick, it can sometimes result in stomach discomfort and discomfort. I also despise it when the frosting is excessively thick
- I wind up scraping the majority of it off my fingers. When you eat one or two pieces of Costco cake, you won’t get a stomach pain from the light mousse icing on top. As a result, Costco does admirably in this area as well. However, because to the low ingredient requirements, it does not function for me in the same way that Walmart does. The majority of Costco’s cakes come from the David’s bakery. In addition to the above components, you’ll most likely find: bleached flour, aluminum-based baking soda, artificial flavoring, artificial color, preservatives (Polysorbate 60 and Potassium Sorbate), dough conditioners, and other additives.
Call me crazy, but I just don’t believe that all of these items (as well as some of the other dozens of components) are essential for a nice cake to turn out.I’m not going to dive into the health implications of some of this, but you may look into the following published research for further information: Cakes made of aluminum and artificial colors are available from Target Bakery at a variety of prices and designs.Processpic.twitter.com/mpkBaCdhJ4 — Real World Recipe (@JatinAh06635122) (https://twitter.com/mpkBaCdhJ4) The 10th of September, 2018

Does Whole Foods have good cakes?
Whole Foods Market sells delectable cakes. And I say that with a certain amount of prejudice because I worked there for more than 20 years.A Whole Foods cake is far superior to any other grocery store cake in terms of taste and texture. They make use of authentic buttercream frosting. That slightly greasy texture you may have noticed in buttercream frosting is due to the frosting being a fake version rather than a true version of buttercream frosting.(source) This ″Bettercreme″ is made of chemicals, and it’s called ″Bettercreme.″ Yuck.
- It is a whipped dairy-free topping with a sweet cool whip flavor that can be used on anything.
- According to their policy, Whole Foods will not sell any items that have artificial sweaters in them in any of the products that are sold in their aisles.

We Ranked 15 Types of Cake, and Carrot Cake Is Absolutely Last
This post may contain affiliate links, from which we may get a commission if a purchase is made.More information may be found by clicking here.Cakes of different sorts are not all created equal.Leave aside the culinary gaffes of European provenance — savory cakes? What the hell is wrong with you, France?— there are certain cakes that, while insulting all of the senses, are popular enough to justify their existence.
- We decided it was past time to rate the cakes on a variety of criteria, including taste.
- While we were primarily concerned with potential tastiness, we also considered appearances and personality.
- Of course, we expect some dissenting voices.
- For example, the fact that fruit cake did not make our list of the worst types of cakes ever to grace a serving plate may cause some people to scratch their heads.
- And that’s great with us – we’ve invited the debate.
- If you can persuade us that we’re incorrect in the comments section, it’s possible that future rankings will take your bizarre tastes into account.
- Unless you’re a huge lover of carrot cake, in which case you should probably stay away.
- In the meanwhile, here is a definite ranking of the many forms of cake.
15 Types of Cake, Ranked from Worst to Best
15. Carrot Cake
When we last looked (i.e., somewhere during preschool), carrots were considered a vegetable — and veggies have as much right to be included in a cake as a bag of chocolate chips has to be included in a soup. What’s more, most recipes ask for boring oil in place of the delicious butter.Yes, this will assist to keep the carrot cake moist, but after a week, you’ll still end up tossing out more than half of the unappealing mess.
14. Fruit Cake
At the very least, they didn’t include the salad ingredients!Fruit, on the other hand, is still the substance of pies. For even greater horrors, fruit cakes candicate the fruits in brandy or black tea, transforming an ordinarily acceptable liquor-based mixture into a technicolor nightmare filled with squishy Skittles-like surprises.Fruit cakes have long been regarded the ″joke present″ of the holiday season, and they are only festive in the sense that they are the last thing picked in a Yankee exchange.
13. Angel Food Cake
You describe it as delicate, but we describe it as bland. What happens when white bread gets involved with a dish sponge is what is known as angel food cake.It is made entirely of egg whites, with no yolks. After they’ve been whisked until light and fluffy, they’re folded into the rest of the ingredients, resulting in a soft and fragile cake that must be turned upside down after baking to avoid sinking. It’s true that Angel Food cake offers a wonderful counterpoint to fresh fruits and syrup, but it’s just a polite way of saying that it’s riding on the coattails of more delectable treats.Assuming this is the type of cake the angels enjoy, we’d want to be invited to Hell.
12. Red Velvet Cake
Red velvet cake is to baking what Cheez Whiz is to cheese – it’s a synthetic creation.Velvet cake was a sort of cake that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s, when things were simpler.Red velvet cakes, on the other hand, gained its color from a chemical reaction that happened when buttermilk and cocoa powder were mixed together naturally.Buttermilk was eventually added to the cake to improve the color and taste of the cake. Then along came John Adams of the Adams Extract Company, who managed to persuade the entire world that this cake necessitated the use of an entire bottle of red food coloring. When it comes to color saturation, it appears that there is no such thing as a law of diminishing returns.
- If you enjoy the bouncy consistency and lighter crumb of this red velvet, we grant you permission to reduce (or just skip) the amount of red food coloring used in our red velvet cupcakes when you make them at home.
11. Birthday Cake
When we originally contemplated producing this list in 2005, birthday cake was among the top five items on our list.We adore how its layers of yellow cake, rainbow sprinkles, and teeth-meltingly sweet icing can be used to brighten up practically any birthday celebration setting. However, birthday cake-flavored things — many of which are not cakes — have taken over the market in the last ten years.Frozen yogurt, alcohol, pastries, popcorn, and lubrication are just a few of the options. You get the gist of it.Sorry, birthday cake, but you’ve reached the end of your usefulness.
- (With the exception of the funfetti cheesecake, we’ll make an exception for you.)
10. Pound Cake
Pound cake is just a brick that has been cooked.Even though it’s on par with angel food cake in terms of blandness, pound cake is saved a little bit by its basic, straightforward AF recipe, which calls for one pound of butter, one pound of sugar, one pound of eggs, and one pound of all-purpose flour. In case you’re having trouble maintaining your cake-and-pillow fort from tumbling down, this is the cake for you.
9. Chiffon Cake
It doesn’t follow that just because we’re in the Top 10 that we’ve gotten to the greatest varieties of cake yet.The chiffon cake is the richest of the sponge cakes, with a rich texture and flavor. However, baking this oil-based cake is one of the more difficult and time-consuming tasks you’ll ever do.It is necessary to separate the eggs and beat the whites until soft peaks form before adding the egg yolks one at a time to the whites. If you do it correctly, the completed cake will be light and airy, but if you do it incorrectly, the cake will shrink and deflate like footballs in the American Football Conference.
8. Mousse Cake
Mousse is not typically associated with desserts. As a dessert that is more liquid than solid, mousse (often chocolate) is essentially luxury pudding — which is like saying McCafé is fancy coffee. It’s also the only sort of cake on our list that doesn’t require baking, which is both a plus and a disadvantage. In most cases, it is baked in a springform pan and has a crumb crust, a layer of mousse, and a crumble topping. After that, it goes into the refrigerator to firm.Nonetheless, if you enjoy foods that you can spoon into your mouth and swallow without chewing, mousse cake may be a good choice for your dessert.
7. Flourless Cake
This flourless chocolate cake, which is yet another deviation from the tried-and-true cake formula of butter, eggs, and flour, does away with the nemesis of Celiac disease patients and our gluten-sensitive relative, who makes Thanksgiving so much fun! However, what this style of cake lacks in flour, it more than makes up for in flavor and texture.
6. Layer Cake
Layer cake is to cake what chocolate chip cookies are to cookies, or what Magic Mike was to male revues – these are the benchmarks by which all others are measured.Layer cake is a broad category that encompasses a wide range of tastes, frostings, and even layers! The layers, as well as the filling, can be made from whatever type of cake you like. For a sumptuous cake, stack layers of rich ganache and buttercream, like Ashlee Marie did in this layer cake recipe, is a good option.Alternatively, you might make a cream cake, which is baked with heavy cream instead of butter and covered with cream cheese icing, as an example. It is all up to you.
- Make an informed decision.
5. Génoise Cake
Genoise cake, also known as Genoese cake or Genovese cake, is an Italian sponge cake that was named after the city of Genoa in the country of Italy. It is produced by first beating the eggs and sugar together, which ensures that the cake batter is light and fluffy.Despite the fact that génoise cake and sponge cake are sometimes confused, a real sponge cake has no fats other than those found in the egg yolks, whereas a génoise cake contains butter and other fats.Despite the fact that its cousin chiffon is significantly richer due to the addition of more oil, we like the simplicity and pronunciation of génoise.
4. Coffee Cake
Only this particular sort of cake is regarded proper for consumption with, or as a part of, one’s morning meal.It provides us delight to think about having two of our favorite things together, even if the coffee portion of the name is meant to be a serving suggestion — ″Eat this cake with coffee!″ — rather than indicating a caffeinated element.Coffee cake is essentially a pound cake since it is created with flour, eggs, butter, and sugar, and it is baked in a loaf pan. However, the streusel topping, which is formed from cinnamon and sugar, elevates the dish to another level. The crunch tooth is satisfied – it’s similar to our sweet craving, but for crunching instead!
3. Butter Cake
As you may have guessed, butter is a favorite of ours.Even if butter cake consisted just of a brick of butter, it would still rank in our top five.Even better, butter cake is made with only four ingredients: butter, sugar, eggs, and flour.Like the majority of cakes. What characterizes a butter cake, in reality, is the order to ″cream the butter and sugar″ until light and fluffy.Theoretically, a few other kinds of cakes that we’ve ranked previously are also buttercakes, but those other kinds of cakes don’t have the word ″butter″ in their titles do they?
2. Dump Cake
Is it possible that you were hoping to find a gorgeous upside-down cake here?Forget about it.We’re all on increasing our return on investment. In the case of baking, it’s all about how little we can do while yet reaping the benefits of delicious results.Dump cake comes in handy in this situation.Bake no mistake, this is the simplest type of cake to make.
- For God’s sake, it only calls for fruit, water, sugar, and cake mix.
- It’s ridiculous!
- And it’s just as delectable as any seven-layered marvel your froufrou baker pal can concoct up in his head.
1. Cheesecake
- Cakes like cheesecake are the pizza of desserts – they’re the cakes that everyone enjoys but that one strange buddy won’t touch. The fact that cheesecake may be made in a variety of flavors, including chocolate cheesecake, peanut butter cheesecake, strawberry cheesecake, oreo cheesecake, vegan cheesecake, and New York-style cheesecake, among others, is sufficient motivation to create it1. People all throughout the world consistently choose Chocolate Cake as the most popular dessert of the year. The combination of a flawlessly moist cake that is densely filled with rich chocolate taste is truly a fantastic combination. Not only does it taste fantastic, but it also frequently transports us back to the great memories of our youth. Cake Basics
The majority of classic cakes demand for a conventional combination of ingredients, including sugar, butter, leavening, and gluten (a kind of gluten) (flour). A few simple materials on hand, as well as proper preparation, can ensure that your cakes turn out perfectly every time!
Sugars
Sugar is necessary in cakes since it is what gives them their sweet flavor.Cake batter is made by mixing sugar with butter or eggs until the sugar crystals are cut into the batter, resulting in thousands of small air bubbles that lighten the batter.During the baking process, these bubbles expand and raise the batter, causing it to rise to the top of the baking pan.Changing the amount of sugar in a recipe may have a significant impact. When a white cake bakes up moist and soft, the sugar to flour ratio is appropriate.Changing the recipe, however, by adding or subtracting sugar from the original recipe may result in a cake that is thick, flat, or difficult to cut into slices.
- Granulated sugar is the most frequent type of sugar used in baking.
Fats
When baking cakes, sugar is really necessary because it is what gives them their sweet flavor.Cake batter is made by mixing sugar with butter or eggs until the sugar crystals are cut into the mixture, resulting in thousands of small air bubbles that lighten the batter. The batter rises in the pan as a result of these expanding bubbles, which increase as the cake bakes and raise the batter. In some recipes, changing the amount of sugar used has significant consequences. It is a good sugar ratio when a white cake comes out moist and soft.Changing the recipe, however, by adding or subtracting sugar from the original recipe may result in a cake that is thick, flat, or difficult to cut into pieces.
- Granulated sugar is the most often used type of sugar for baking.
Eggs
Eggs are essential in the preparation of cakes. The addition of these ingredients to our cakes and cookies provides structure, color, and flavor. The whites and yolks of an egg are the two most important components of the egg.For example, a beaten egg white can assist in the rising of an Angel Food Cake. The addition of an egg yolk may change a plain white cake into a stunning yellow cake. The majority of recipes ask for one entire egg.
- It is critical to utilize eggs that are at room temperature and to ensure that you have the appropriate size.
- In my cakes, I like big to extra large eggs, and I will often indicate which size you should use.
- The difference in volume between the two is generally 1-2 teaspoons, and while switching them around won’t ruin a recipe, choosing the proper size can help you make the ideal cake every time.
Leaveners
When it comes to cake recipes, baking soda and baking powder are the two most commonly used leaveners.Bicarbonate of soda is the chemical name for baking soda.It balances out the acidity of certain components in the batter, allowing the cakes to bake up golden brown in the oven while still fresh from the oven.baking powder is made from a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar, which is a naturally occurring acid. The use of baking powder alone might result in a lighter texture in cakes.
Flour
The quantity of protein included in flours sold in grocery stores is the most significant variation between them.A cake recipe should specify the type of flour that is to be used, but if it does not, you may typically presume that the author is referring to all-purpose flour.All-purpose flour, often known as plain flour, is a versatile flour that may be used in a variety of recipes.All-purpose flour has a protein concentration of 10 to 13 percent and is known for its constant performance.Cake flour is the ideal type of flour for baking cakes because it produces layers that are extremely delicate. It has 8-9 percent protein, making it one among the lowest in terms of protein composition.
- Both bleached and unbleached flours can be used in cake recipes with no difference in results.
Salt
This is the one item that I use in all of my baking without a doubt. The flavor of the cake is enhanced by the use of salt; otherwise, the cake would taste like a sugar excess. In the absence of this flavor enhancer, the secondary tastes in a cake will be overshadowed by the sweetness of the cake.Salt may also serve as a protein strengthener, which can aid in the creation of the perfect cake.Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals, making the ideal cake is simple, no matter what recipe you choose. My collection of cake recipes is always growing, and I like being able to add tried and true recipes to my collection.
