3 Things to Know about Buying a Gift Card with a Gift Card
I’ve used a gift card to purchase another gift card on a number of occasions, but in the last couple of years, I’ve seen that more and more companies are enacting store regulations that prevent you from purchasing a new gift card with a gift card you currently own.As a result, I was left with three questions.The first is who makes the decision on whether or not you may purchase a gift card using a gift card.Second, why would you want to do something like that?And, thirdly, why would you be denied permission to do so?
This is what I came up with as a solution.
Who Makes the Gift Card Rules?
The Credit CARD Act of 2009, approved by Congress in 2009, is a federal legislation that regulates credit cards.With its adoption, businesses were no longer permitted to set expiration dates on gift cards that were less than five years in length, nor could they impose gift card fees for gift cards that were not used within a year of purchase.Although I went through this Act, there was nothing that I could discover that addressed the legality of purchasing a gift card using a gift card.Consequently, I looked into state gift card legislation, but was unable to locate any mention of this sort of transaction once again.The ability to purchase gift cards using gift cards is not governed by federal or state legislation, thus businesses can decide whether or not to enable customers to use gift cards to purchase other gift cards in their stores–this includes purchasing the same brand card or a third-party card.
Be aware that Visa gift cards are not the same as other gift cards.While it is possible that you may not be able to use a store’s gift card to purchase another gift card, you will most likely be able to use a Visa gift card to purchase a branded gift card.I’ll go into more detail about this later.
Why Would You Buy a Gift Card with a Store Gift Card?
When asked this topic, I’ve heard people respond, ″Why would you want to purchase a gift card with a gift card?″ I’ve also heard, ″Why would you want to purchase a gift card with a gift card?″ My darling, there are a number of reasonable explanations for this situation.Allow me to describe a couple of them in further detail below: 1.To obtain the Gift Card that you desire.The development of gift card kiosks in malls, grocery shops, craft stores, petrol stations, and other locations means that you can go into one store and purchase a gift card for another without having to leave the mall.This provides an opportunity to exchange a gift card that you received for one that you prefer.
For example, my children received a gift card to Toys R Us shortly after Christmas last year.Because Santa had been so kind to them, I advised that they did not require any further gifts.They agreed because they were satisfied (at least for the time being).

Honestly, this is the only way I’ve found to truly ″swap″ a gift card without having to give up a portion of its face value.2.To divide the value of the gift card.Gift cards are simple to regift, but the amount on the card may be an unusual sum (for example, $23.42) or may be more than you wish to give to the person you are giving it to.
If you return the gift card to the business where it was purchased, you may be able to use it to purchase a new gift card (or cards) in the amount you choose from them.3.To bring the plastic up to date.
- I had a discounted Williams-Sonoma gift card in my wallet that looked like it had been there for quite some time.
- I really wanted to give it to a friend as a wedding gift, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to because I already owned one.
- Consequently, I went to the store and used the old gift card to purchase a little present, in addition to purchasing a fresh Williams-Sonoma gift card that seemed to be brand new.
- As part of the outstanding customer service provided by Williams-Sonoma, the cashier placed the new gift card in a lovely gift card holder that came replete with tissue and a bag.
