    • In the first step, combine the powdered sugar and the butter
    • In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer on low speed, blend the powdered sugar and butter until completely incorporated. If you do not have an electric mixer, you may alternatively use a wooden spoon to combine the ingredients.
    • Step two: Mix in the vanilla and the milk.
    • Mix in the vanilla extract and one tablespoon of milk until well combined. Combine until everything is well-combined.
    • Adding the remaining milk is the third step.
    • Gradually add in the remaining tablespoon of milk, beating constantly, until the frosting has acquired a smooth and spreading consistency. You can thin the frosting by adding a few drops of milk, one at a time, until it achieves a creamy consistency. If the frosting is too runny, you may thicken it with a tiny quantity of powdered sugar until it is the consistency you like.
    • Step Four: Add the Food Coloring to the mixture.
    • Add the food coloring after the frosting has been thoroughly blended. This recipe calls for around 60-70 drops of navy blue food coloring to achieve the appropriate colour of frosting for four cups of buttercream.
    • In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the food coloring and frosting until they are completely blended. To incorporate the food coloring into the frosting, you can use an electric mixer, a wooden spoon, or a rubber spatula. If the color does not come out the way you want it to, you may add additional food coloring to it.
    • For store-bought frosting, scrape the frosting into a mixing bowl using a spatula after it has been chilled. Afterwards, you may add food coloring to the frosting and properly combine it all
    • If the blue color gets on your clothes, it may cause discoloration, therefore make sure to remove the stain as soon as you see it. You should use caution when eating it since the navy blue coloring may stain your teeth, tongue, and lips for a short period of time.
    • It may appear like 70 drops of food coloring for four cups of frosting is an excessive quantity of food coloring, but it will most likely be the exact amount needed to get the desired navy blue hue. To put things in perspective, 100 drops of food coloring are equivalent to around one teaspoon of dye.
    • If you store the frosting in an airtight container at room temperature for two to three days, it will last longer. In the refrigerator, it will last up to a week and in the freezer, it will last up to six months.
    • It is possible that the frosting and food coloring will separate after being kept, in which case it will need to be blended.     Introduction: Blue Foods! Colorful Cooking Without Artificial Dyes

    Blue is a color that is notoriously hard to come by in the world of natural foods.And, even among foods that are referred to as blue, only a handful of them have a pigment that is truly blue (as opposed to purple or greenish).However, due to the paucity of naturally blue foods, you have to make do with what you can acquire, so please accept my apologies if some of the items on my list are just blueish in color.Up until this point, the color research has been able to concentrate on relatively common plant meals and how to maintain them vibrant in appearance.However, when it comes to blue, things are going to become crazy.While conducting research and testing for this piece, I had the sensation of being a crazy scientist- (pH strips, mold, simmering pots of blue liquid).

    • Anthocyanins are responsible for the pigmentation of the majority of the blue foods I’m describing.
    • Most anthocyanins contain unstable pigments that are impacted by the pH of the environment in which they are found.
    • The classic example is red cabbage, which may change color from brilliant red to purple to blue to dark blue-green depending on the acidity to which it is exposed.
    • While under basic circumstances, most color shifting anthocyanins will lean toward the blue/purple range, and in acidic conditions, they will trend toward the purple/red range.
    • So you’ve discovered a blue food source?
    • It’s likely that if you mix it with acid, it will become purple.

    Also, what happens if you have a purple meal and you add acid?The likelihood is that it will become red.In the midst of all this wonderful pH color-changing activity, there is one major caveat: practically all meals are acidic.

    • Yeah.
    • So, what is the proper way to prepare food with blue?
    • There are a few exceptions, however: foods and preparation techniques that contain only a little amount of acid, allowing the color to remain blue (and cheating here and there with a pinch of baking soda).
    • Furthermore, there are a few exceptions to the variable anthocyanin rule that will allow you to use alternative cooking procedures while still obtaining a hint of blue coloration.
    • I’ve divided these blue meals into two categories: those that contain anthocyanins (the color changes) and those that do not.
    • Prepare yourself by donning your lab goggles, pulling out your pH strips, and preparing for some strange, blue culinary experiences.

    Anthocyanins are pigments that are blue or purple in color.When you pluck blueberries, they are blue in color, but when they are crushed, they turn reddish-purple in color.A blue pigment in the epidermis turns red when it is exposed to an acidic environment such as that created by the berries’ acid.

    1. When it comes to blueberries, the flavor is typically far more significant to me than the color, and the flavor is even greater when the blueberries are acidic.
    2. Occasionally, blueberries will turn green if they are exposed to an excessive amount of a base, such as in pancake batter or muffin mix.
    3. If you want to avoid this discolouration, either reduce the amount of baking soda/powder in the recipe or increase the amount of acid in the recipe, such as lemon juice or buttermilk.
    1. Blue Maize- Blue types of corn are high in anthocyanins, which are antioxidants.
    2. While blue corn will seem purple when grown in acidic settings, blue corn will appear more blue when grown in basic conditions.
    3. When making cornbread or tortillas, try substituting blue cornmeal with the yellow cornmeal.
    4. Red Cabbage- In the United States, red cabbage is the most often used natural blue food coloring source.
    5. If you soak cooked red cabbage leaves in a somewhat basic solution for a while, the color will ultimately turn blue purple.

    For a blue food dye, cut up red cabbage leaves and boil them for 10-15 minutes until they are soft.After straining the cabbage, reduce the cooking liquid to a consistency that is thick and syrupy (the cooking liquid from a full cabbage will decrease to approximately one-fourth cup).You should now have a syrup that is extremely purple.Only the slightest sprinkle of baking powder should be used (you really have to go slowly here or you can turn the whole batch green).Continue to add baking soda in very little amounts until the color is just beginning to turn blue.

    It is critical to use only a small amount of baking soda, not only for the color, but also for the flavor.When used in little amounts, baking soda has no influence on the flavor; nevertheless, if used in large quantities, it will be unpleasant.You now have a blue dye in your possession.

    • It may seem disgusting, but the flavor of the color is actually not that strong when combined with cooked cabbage and baking soda.
    • Using a gentle hand, you may add a bit of blue to icings, cake batters, and cookie doughs.
    • However, keep in mind that the hue is still subject to change.

    If you mix it with an acidic dish, it will return to its original purple color.Purple potatoes are a vivid purple while they are raw, but when they are cooked, the balance shifts to a magnificent blue-purple color.The limitations of my chemical understanding are being tested here, yet this color shift is of a different character than other acid/base variations.Cooked purple potatoes are vulnerable to color changes caused by acid, however they are far less susceptible than red cabbage or blueberries.

    Furthermore, when exposed to high doses of acid, purple potatoes bleach and turn a very pale purple—not at all like the strong purple found in raw potatoes.Purple potatoes, on the other hand, are not particularly sensitive to losing their color.For all of these reasons, they are an excellent way to add a splash of color to a meal without having to worry about the pH.Purple potatoes, which are high in anthocyanins, offer an advantage over white and yellow potatoes in terms of nutritional content.Try using them as a substitute in your potato dishes.Cornflowers, sometimes known as bachelor’s buttons, are a brilliant blue flower that blooms in the summer.

    The blooms are edible, and they may be used as a garnish for a dessert dish or as a fresh addition to salads.As an alternative to fresh flowers, dried flowers can be used as a garnish.There is no discernible flavor (you’re really only using them for the color, after all).Cornflowers are included in some loose leaf tea blends, and they definitely form an eye-catching show when juxtaposed with the shriveled black tendrils of the tea leaves.To ensure that you receive the highest quality flowers, always check with your supplier to ensure the flowers were produced organically or treated with chemicals that are safe for humans to consume.

    • The borage plant, which is commonly cultivated alongside tomatoes and eggplant, has large, hairy leaves as well as clusters of small, five-pointed blue flowers.
    • The use of borage blossoms is said to have mood-enhancing properties, according to several folk medicine traditions.
    • And, after all, how could adding a few delicate flowers to your dish fail to brighten your disposition?
    1. Fresh borage blossoms can be added to salads or used as a garnish on desserts.

    Navy Blue Buttercream in 3 Easy Steps!

    What is the best way to make navy blue buttercream?This is one of the most often asked things I see on social media in the cake world, and it’s easy to understand why.This is due to the fact that it might be difficult to achieve the correct, deep navy blue without adding an excessive amount of food coloring.And we all know that using too much food coloring might result in the dreaded bitter flavor in your buttercream that everyone hates.Today, I’m going to reveal my technique to creating a stunning, deep navy blue buttercream that is quite simple to create and will not leave a bitter aftertaste in your mouth.Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, which means they earn a commission if you click on them.

    To mix navy blue, you will need:

    • Use your favorite uncolored buttercream (I recommend my American Buttercream recipe).

    In creating this color blend, I didn’t utilize precise measurements. I’ll show you step-by-step how I created the hue with my eyes closed.

    Step 1-Darken your buttercream with cocoa powder:

    Following the preparation of your chosen amount of buttercream in a bowl, a tiny amount of cocoa powder will be added.The cocoa powder is used to deepen the color of the buttercream without adding any black to the mixture.This tip will assist you in avoiding that unpleasant bitter taste.As an added bonus, it reduces the need for food coloring.You save money as a result of this!(The chocolate also helps to cover any bitter flavors that may have crept into the dish!) Please ensure that your client/customers are aware that this buttercream will have a chocolate flavor to it owing to the use of cocoa powder in the recipe before proceeding.

    • The buttercream should look somewhat like this after you have added a little bit of cocoa powder to it…
    • I start with a very modest amount of cocoa powder and work my way up.
    • There’s always the option of adding more later if your mixture isn’t dark enough, but you won’t be able to take any out if you’ve darkened it too much already.

    Step 2-Mix in your blue food coloring:

    After you’ve darkened the buttercream with cocoa, it’s time to include the blue!I don’t use pre-mixed navy blue or dark blue colors since they are too bright.When I do this, I find that I have to use a lot of food coloring and that the finished product is typically murky in color.Instead, I work with a modest selection of fundamental colors that I can mix together to produce hundreds of different variations of the same hue.This is one of my most effective cake hacks for saving money!This is also why it should come as no surprise that my very first blog article is on how to make a buttercream color mixture with food coloring.

    • To achieve the right navy shade, I use Americolor’s ″Sky Blue″ gel color in conjunction with the other colors.

    • You may already have other colors in your color library that would work well as substitutes for this particular brand and hue, so don’t worry if you don’t have these exact ones.

    Step 3- Mix in your pink food coloring:

    Blue is a highly important color and one of the most often used colors on a painter’s palette, and it is represented by the color blue.If you can learn how to blend different shades of blue hues, it will be quite beneficial to you since it will immediately increase your color mixing talents.A wide variety of blues are available, including bright blues, dark blues, warm blues, muted blues, and many more.Here you will discover the critical subtlety of what colors combine to form blue and how to obtain the desired effect of generating different hues of blue colors.

    What colors make blue?

    Blue is a primary hue, and as a result, you will never be able to make a ″pure blue″ by combining different colors. However, via the technique of color mixing, we can produce a plethora of different shades of blue! Look at the colors that, when mixed together, produce different hues of blue. We’ll start with a light blue color and work our way up.

    How to mix light shades of blue colors

    In many cases, you will be required to combine multiple hues of blue colors that are lighter in tone than the primary color.An example of mixing several types of lighter blue hues with ultramarine blue and cobalt blue may be seen below in the form of a chart.You will see that I used ultramarine blue in the first two color mixing and cobalt blue in the last two color mixtures, as you can see in the images below.I just used blue and white to lighten the color of the blue.As a result, the color is vibrant and rich.When combined with white, ultramarine blue and cobalt blue become extremely vivid and saturated hues.

    • As a result, I demonstrate a muted blue by combining a small amount of orange with blue.
    • Orange combined with a lighter blue produces a light blue that is slightly muted, as seen in the second and fourth lines of the illustration.
    • When the blue is brightened with white, it is easier to see how ultramarine blue is warmer (and leans toward purple) and cobalt blue is cooler (and leans toward blue-green) (leans slightly more towards green).
    • There is a distinct variation in appearance between the two blue colors shown in all of the color charts below.

    How to make dark shades of blue colors

    Blues are wonderful for use as dark hues! Because ultramarine blue is already a very dark hue, it is only natural to use it to produce other dark colors.     Dioxazine Purple

    As can be seen in the first line, the combination of dioxazine purple and ultramarine blue produces a rich dark hue. It is not just that dioxazine purple makes ultramarine blue darker, but it also gives it a slight purple tint, which is a bonus.
