To finish, spread extra cream on top of the cake and garnish with more fresh strawberries, if desired. To give the whipped cream even more flavor, mix in some lemon curd or grated white chocolate before serving.

    Layer It

An angel food cake is a light, sweet, and fluffy cake that may be topped with a number of toppings ranging from cream, custard, and buttercream icing, to fruits and preserves, jam, and chocolate glaze to create a delectable treat.Because of its low-fat content, however, this delightful morsel only lasts a couple of days before it begins to deteriorate. There is good news in that you may freeze any leftover angel food cake and eat it for several weeks without wasting one single crumb, as long as it is preserved properly.Learn all you need to know about freezing angel food cake to ensure that it keeps its best texture and flavor for future eating in the sections below.

    Types of Angel Food Cake

Angel food cake is a light and fluffy sponge-like cake with a delicate texture, similar to that of a sponge cake. One of the most distinguishing characteristics of angel food cake is that it does not contain any egg yolks, nor does it contain any sort of fat such as butter, shortening, or oil.It is produced with an egg white foundation, flour, and sugar as a base ingredient.Angel food cake may be created in a number of tastes, including vanilla, chocolate, orange, and lemon, despite the fact that all forms of angel food cake have the same basic components (with the exception of egg yolks and fats).

With a little dusting of icing sugar, the cake can be served as is or with a drizzle of glaze, frosting, or a dollop of cream. As soon as the cake’s base is completed, the possibilities for decorating, frosting, and filling it are virtually limitless.

Can I Freeze Angel Food Cake?

Angel food cake is a type of cake that may be frozen.Because the cake does not include any fats or oils, it does not retain a significant amount of moisture when it is frozen. As a result, it is critical to follow the instructions for freezing the cake in order to guarantee that it retains its great quality when defrosted. While the angel food cake is still fresh, ideally no more than 2 or 3 days, it should be stored in the freezer for storage.

Keep in mind that a cake that is old before it is frozen will remain old after it has been frozen.Placing the cake in the freezer will have no effect on the quality or freshness of the cake.Because angel food cake is such a light cake, it is recommended to freeze it without any toppings, as the toppings may cause it to get stale while in the freezer.

    • The best option is to bake (or purchase) the cake and freeze it in its unfrosted state.
    • Defrost the cake and decorate to your heart’s content, making sure that the cake not only looks lovely but also retains its texture and flavor once the toppings have been incorporated into the cake’s composition.
    • Continue reading to find out exactly which toppings are ideal for freezing if you have already decorated the cake or if you need to store leftovers in the freezer after baking.

How To Freeze Angel Food Cake

Angel food cake is prone to drying out in the freezer due to the low-fat component makeup of the cake. Follow the methods outlined below to keep your cake party-ready even after it has been placed in the freezer.

How To Freeze A Whole Angel Food Cake

    Step 1: Cool

If you have a newly made angel food cake, allow it to cool entirely to room temperature before cutting into it.It should be sufficient to allow for two hours of cooling time.It is ideal to freeze the cake as soon as it has completely cooled and is still fresh in order to avoid it from losing moisture and drying out during transportation. To avoid the cake becoming bogged down in the freezer, save the icing and decorating for right before serving, when the cake has been defrosted and cooled completely.

    Step 2: Cling Wrap

Wrap the entire cake twice in cling film to protect it from moisture.Check to see that all of the corners have been thoroughly coated and sealed. The goal here is to guarantee that no area of the cake is exposed to any amount of air at any point in time.Loss of moisture, which causes the cake to become dry and crumbly, and odor absorption from neighboring items are all possible consequences of gaps in the wrapper.

    Step 3: Foil Wrap

Wrap the cake in aluminum foil one more time, making sure it is completely covered and there are no visible spaces. A resealable freezer bag that is large enough to hold your cake can also be used; simply place the cake in the bag and push out all of the air before sealing it.

    Step 4: Label

In order to keep track of how long your cake has been in the freezer, label the wrapped cake with the date that it was frozen.

    Step 5: Freeze

When the cake is placed in the freezer, it will retain its soft and delicate texture. You may store the wrapped cake in a Tupperware container to keep it from being smashed by other objects on the table. Alternatively, place it on a big freezer-friendly plate or board to guarantee that it remains on a level surface during the freezing procedure.

How To Freeze Angel Food Cake Leftovers

    Step 1: Keep it Fresh

It is recommended to freeze the cake as soon as possible after making it to avoid it from losing moisture and drying out throughout the freezing process. If you are not planning to consume the cake within 5 days, you should consider freezing it.

    Step 2: Remove Cream Topping

Make sure to take off any fresh cream or fresh fruit decorations from the cake since they will not freeze properly and will ruin the cake. You may safely freeze a cake that has been frosted with buttercream, filled with jam, or sprinkled with confectioners’ sugar as long as the topping has not been broken or damaged.

    Step 3: Portion

Using slices or squares, cut the cake into pieces so that you may thaw only the amount of cake you need at a time.

    Step 4: Cling Wrap

Wrap each item in cling film twice, one on top of the other. Make certain that all of the corners are completely covered and sealed to ensure that there is no exposure to the outside environment. Gaps in the covering can result in freezer burn, moisture loss, and odor absorption from the items around it, among other things.

    Step 5: Foil Wrap

Wrap the pieces, either together or separately, in aluminum foil one more time, being sure to completely cover them and leave no exposed parts. Alternatively, place the cake in a zip-top freezer bag and gently press out all of the air before sealing the bag closed.

    Step 6: Label

In order to keep track of how long your cake has been in the freezer, label the wrapped cake with the date that it was frozen.

    Step 7: Freeze

When the cake is placed in the freezer, it will retain its soft and delicate texture. You may store the wrapped cake in a Tupperware container to keep it from being smashed by other objects on the table.

How To Freeze Store-bought Angel Food Cake

Angel food cake purchased from a store is rarely topped with additional ingredients and is often sold plain or lightly glazed. This makes it an excellent choice for freezing. Also, store-bought pre-packaged cakes are more likely to contain some form of stabilizers and preservatives, which extends their shelf life and makes them somewhat more moist than the all-natural, homemade version. When purchasing a store-bought cake, make sure to remove the plastic base and dome lid before wrapping the cake in two pieces of clingfilm yourself.

In the dome, there is an excessive amount of exposure to the air surrounding the cake, which will not only damage the cake but will also dry it out.It is important to remove all of the air from the cake if it is packaged in a plastic sealed packet. This may be accomplished by penetrating the bag and gently squeezing out the air, followed by double wrapping the cake in two layers of clingfilm.

    • Once more, wrap the cake in aluminum foil or place it in an airtight freezer bag, pushing out any air before sealing it up.
    • Label the containers and place them in the freezer according to the instructions in the previous section.

How To Thaw Frozen Angel Food Cake

Angel food cake should be enjoyed within one to two days of thawing once it has been defrosted.

    Step 1: Refrigerate

Removing your cake from the freezer and placing it in the refrigerator to thaw for a few hours while it is still covered in plastic wrap is recommended.

    Step 2: Remove Wrapping

Remove the cake from its packaging when it has thawed.

    Step 3: Restore Moisture

It is possible to reheat the cake in the microwave for a few seconds shortly before eating it if it has dried out throughout the freezing procedure. In addition, serve it with a fresh fruit compote, cream, or custard on top to finish it off.Keep in mind that it is not recommended to microwave cakes with buttercream frosting on top.The frosting will melt, separate, and become sticky as a result of the heat.

    3. Label the bags with the current date so that you can keep track of how much time is remaining. Angel food cake will store well in the freezer for up to 4-6 months
    4. however, it is best served immediately.
    5. Place the bags in a plastic container, such as a Tupperware container, and freeze for several hours or overnight. This will prevent the cakes from being crushed by other objects in the freezer while they are cooling.
    6. Consume the cake within 6 months of receiving it.

This procedure is effective not just for home-baked cakes, but also for store-bought desserts. In reality, freshly made in-store cakes are almost always transported frozen, making them perfectly safe to refreeze. You should avoid freezing freshly baked angel food cake with the frosting on it if you wish to save it for a long period of time.If you use icing or other toppings on top of the cake while it is freezing, the cake will get heavier.

Make careful to allow the cake to cool to room temperature before storing it in the freezer for later use.A solid two hours will suffice.

How to Defrost Angel Food Cake

In order to enjoy a slice of the beautiful cake, defrost it in the refrigerator for a few hours or until it has thawed completely to room temperature.Angel food cake must be consumed immediately after it has been thawed, or it will dry out, becoming crumbly and tasteless.Adding a layer of sauce or fruit slices on top of your angel food cake will help to moisten it if it becomes excessively dry.You may also try microwaving it for a few seconds to help return some of the moisture it lost during the cooking process.

Do not refreeze a cake that has been thawed.

    Tips & Tricks

If you don’t plan on storing the angel food cake for more than 4-6 months, simply store it in the refrigerator. It can keep for up to a week in the refrigerator if you cover it tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. This will assist in keeping moisture in the plant and avoiding it from drying out.

Keep angel food cake at room temperature for 1 to 2 days to ensure that it remains fresh and delicious.

While following these storage guidelines should keep you safe, it’s always a good idea to verify the cake’s freshness before consuming it. Examine the overall look. When you see mold, it’s time to evacuate. You’re welcome to take a smell of it as well. Simply throw it away if you notice a strange stench emanating from it.

    Substituting Ingredients

Angel food cake is a simple recipe that requires few ingredients. To get the ideal fluffy texture and flavor, it is necessary to follow the recipe to the letter. That means no substituting whole wheat flour for cake flour or reducing the amount of eggs used. 2 out of 10 for Taste of Home

    Using Cold Eggs

The ideal egg temperature for angel food cake is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. In order to ensure that the eggs whip properly, remove a dozen eggs from the refrigerator approximately one hour before you bake. 3 out of 10

Not Whipping the Egg Whites Correctly

Because angel food cake does not include any yeast to function as a leavening agent, it is entirely dependent on the egg whites to rise. If you whisk the whites for too long, the cake will become chewy and thick. Whipping the whites only until they form soft peaks is sufficient. (This is not good!) 4 out of 10 stars for Taste of Home

    Stirring the Batter

When you’re ready to drop the dry ingredients into your egg whites, it’s tempting to start stirring, just as you would with any other cake batter. But resist the temptation.Instead, carefully fold the flour into the whites, flipping the mixture over with a rubber spatula, until all of the flour is included. Are you brand new to this technique?

    Greasing the Pan

It may sound absurd, but it is true! For the angel food cake to rise correctly, it must be able to adhere to the sides of the baking pan while baking. If your pan has been oiled, the batter will not be able to accomplish this effectively. 6 out of 10

Not Using a Special Angel Food Cake Pan

Angel food cake requires a special shape, such as this angel food cake pan, to be properly made if you want to be successful at making it. Making this cake in a conventional cake tin or even a Bundt pan will not provide the same airy results as making it in a springform pan. 7 out of 10 Photograph courtesy of Shutterstock/Edith Czech

    Opening the Oven

This is something we’re all guilty of. You want to check on the cake every few of minutes, so you open the oven door every few minutes… However, those temperature fluctuations might cause your cake to bake unevenly or even collapse. While baking this chocolate angel cake, if you find yourself tempted to look, turn on the oven light instead. 8 out of 10 for Taste of Home

    Cooling the Cake Right-Side Up

This is a very necessary step.Every angel food cake must be cooled in the pan by turning it upside down. Why?The spongy nature of the cake will not firm until it has been allowed to cool fully.

It is important to flip it upside down to ensure that it does not collapse throughout the procedure. Some angel food cake pans are equipped with feet, allowing you to simply tip the pan over and allow it to cool.If your pan does not have this function, you can use the hole in the pan to fit over the neck of a bottle.

    • In my experience, they don’t remain fresh in the refrigerator for lengthy periods of time.
    • So, I was wondering if it was possible to freeze angel food cake.
    • The good news is that angel food cake can be frozen.
    • Angel food cake differs from most other cakes in that it does not include butter or heavy oils, which causes it to lose moisture rapidly and become dry and crumbly if not prepared properly.
    • Consequently, it’s important to freeze it immediately after cooking to ensure that it preserves its soft, moist feel after being frozen.

How to Make Angel Food Cake

Angel food cake, with its light and fluffy texture, is a popular spring and summer treat that is perfect for entertaining. From Bridget Edwards of Bake at 350, a blog about baking.Angel food cake is truly the stuff of angels; it is light, fluffy, and ethereal in texture.Given its lightness and versatility, it is the ideal cake for spring and summer, and it may be matched with any number of fruits or berries.

Angels begin to sing in the background. It is necessary to plan ahead of time while making an angel food cake. You’ll need an angel food cake or tube pan that’s specifically designed for this recipe.

    • The first and most important guideline of making angel food cakes is to never oil the pan!
    • I know it seems paradoxical, but those egg whites will not be able to crawl up the side of a greased baking pan.
    • In order to make the cake, you’ll need a lot of egg whites, 12 to be exact.
    • Use the 3-bowl procedure we discussed before to separate the eggs while separating the yolks from the whites.
    • Because there are 12 egg whites in the mix, you really don’t want the yolk to shatter into a large bowl of separated whites on egg number 11.
    • If you have a runaway yolk, using the three-bowl approach will save you a lot of eggs.
    • Egg whites must be room temperature before mixing, however they will separate better if left at room temperature for a few minutes.
    • Separate the eggs, then place the yolks in the freezer to be used to create a pastry cream or lemon curd (which would be delicious on a cake).
    1. In order to achieve the best results with this cake, you’ll want to make sure that your mixing bowl and any other instruments you’re using are clear of oil before beginning.
    2. As an extra precaution, wash everything clean with some white vinegar before rinsing with water and allowing it to dry completely.
    3. Another star of the show is cream of tartar (ideally not the one that’s been sitting in the back of your spice cabinet for the past six years), which can be found at any grocery store.
    4. Cream of tartar functions as a stabilizer for all of those egg whites, ensuring that they remain fluffy and towering in appearance.
    5. Cake flour is used in this recipe, which results in a softer cake with a more delicate texture when baked.
    6. The granulated sugar for this recipe will also be processed to make it smaller, simpler to dissolve, and lighter in weight so that it does not deflate the egg whites during the baking process.
    1. All you’ll need to do is pulse normal sugar in a food processor until it’s finer in texture.
    2. When making the peaks, you’ll be searching for soft and firm peaks at certain points in the process.
    3. In this case, the peak is said to be ″soft.″ Even though it’s a little frothy, and the mixture is about to create a peak, it flops over.
    4. A stiff peak is formed when the mixture retains its peak even after being shaken or beaten with a beater.
    1. The peaks are shiny and smooth in appearance.
    2. Once the cake batter has been thoroughly mixed, it should be spooned into the pan.
    3. Run a knife or a spatula through the batter very carefully to ensure that there are no major air pockets.
    4. Oh, it’s so beautiful.
    1. The top will be faintly brown and cracked when it has finished baking.
    2. The trick to retaining the beautiful height and fluff of the cake is to chill it upside-down while it is still warm.
    3. Angel food cake pans are available in a variety of shapes and sizes.
    4. Some of them have feet connected to them so that the cake may rest on them.

Others just have a hole in the center of the piece. The cake can be supported in the center with a bottle.(Now is an excellent moment to crack open that bottle of wine that’s been sitting half-empty in your fridge for a while.) A vintage Coca-Cola bottle may also suffice.) Unlike my previous pan, this one has handles on the side and a hole that is too small to accommodate a bottle.Thank god for a college-bound adolescent who came home from college and immediately thought of balancing the cake handles on two paint cans.Whatever works for you!

    1. Allow for a thorough cooling of the cake before putting it out, which should take around two hours.
    2. Invert the pan onto a cake plate by running a knife down the edge of the pan and into the center hole.
    3. Give it a couple vigorous shakes to get the air out of it.
    4. It may be necessary to pass the knife around the blade again and repeat the process if it does not release immediately.
    5. The best way to cut angel food cake is with a serrated knife.
    • I like to top mine with a colossal dollop (or three) of whipped topping before serving.
    • Of course, real whipped cream is always a wonderful addition to any dish.
    • Brown sugar-macerated strawberries are my favorite fruit garnish to serve with ice cream.
    • Fruits such as plain berries, cherries, peaches, and even chocolate syrup are other delicious options.
    • How long has it been since you’ve cooked angel food cake for your loved ones?
