The following ingredients are needed to prepare a king cake: flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk, and yeast.Modern King Cakes have evolved since the 1950s, with fillings becoming increasingly popular, particularly cream cheese and praline fillings, as well as butter and spices for a cinnamon-roll effect, among other things.Ingredients are simple to come by, and decorative ideas may take you all the way to the top since this cake is about expressing yourself and not following in the footsteps of others who have gone before you.Prepare to be awed by the countless variations on this delicious and unusual delicacy that can be found by searching for King Cake on the internet.

MY RECIPE FOR A BEAUTIFUL, DELICIOUS KING CAKE

Here’s how I prepare a traditional King Cake. I sometimes create a single large cake, and other times I make two smaller ones so that I may share the delight and enjoyment with other people.

Ingredients

CAKE

  • Twelve-cups lukewarm water (110 to 115 degrees)
  • two packets active dry yeast (approximately four and a half teaspoons)
  • two teaspoons plus one-and-a-half cups granulated sugar
  • 3 12 to 4 12 cups all-purpose flour
  • (plus up to a third of a cup extra as you knead the dough).
  • Salt, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or nutmeg), 1 teaspoon finely shredded lemon zest, or orange zest (optional), 12 cup lukewarm milk (110 to 115 degrees), 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest, or orange zest
  • 5 egg yolks are required. battered to a pulp
  • Eight cups extremely soft butter, cut into 12 inch pieces (about a half stick, four ounces)
  • In addition, 2 tablespoons of extremely soft butter
  • 1 pecan half or walnut half, 1 whole almond, or 1 uncooked dried lima bean
  • 1 shelled pecan half or walnut half
  • 1 entire almond
  • 1 uncooked dried lima bean

GLAZE BEFORE BAKING (optional)

  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk

ICING

  • Iced sugar in three colors: purple, green, and yellow/gold (sugar and food coloring in a glass jar with a tight-fitting cover, shake it up!)
  • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice or orange juice with 1 tablespoon milk, or 3 tablespoons milk is a good starting point.

Instructions

CAKE

  1. In a small, shallow dish, whisk together the lukewarm water, yeast, and 2 tablespoons of the sugar until thoroughly combined
  2. set aside.
  3. Remove from heat and allow it rest and bloom while you prepare the flour mixture.
  4. To make the cake, in a large mixing bowl, add 3 12 cups of the flour, the remaining 12 cup of granulated sugar, salt, cinnamon, and grated lemon zest
  5. whisk until thoroughly combined.
  6. To produce a very soft dough/thick batter, form a well in the flour and add the puffed-up yeast mixture, lukewarm milk, and beaten egg yolks, stirring constantly until the dough/thick batter comes together
  7. Work in soft butter chunks, pushing against the edges of the bowl to ensure thorough mixing
  8. Pour in an additional half cup of flour, and more if necessary, to produce a dough that is rather sticky but retains its shape
  9. Make a very, very soft ball or lump out of the flour, making sure it is more dry than sticky.
  10. Turn the dough out onto a floured cutting board or counter top and knead it for 5 minutes, rotating and scraping the dough as you go, adding flour sparingly as you go
  11. Allow your dough to rest while you grease the interior of a big mixing bowl thoroughly with vegetable oil or additional soft butter
  12. after your dough is soft, springy, and dry, set it aside.
  13. Using a kitchen towel, wrap the dough ball in the bowl and set it aside in a warm location for one to one and a half hours, or until the dough has doubled in size and seems dry and puffy.
  14. The dough is knocked down with a powerful, brave punch: POOF! After that, gently knead the dough for a few turns.
  15. Divide the dough into two equal halves and roll them out to form two rings. Alternatively, leave it to form a single massive ring.
  16. Prepare a large baking pan or cookie sheet for each ring (either one large or two smaller ones), coated with baking paper and generously oiled with butter
  17. Using one piece of the dough, roll it into a plump 20-inch cylinder that is parallel to the counter’s edge
  18. Placing it on the prepared baking parchment, form it into a large open ring, either round or oval, pushing it out to the corners while leaving the center open (see photo).
  19. Insert the feve (a half-pecan or whole-nut pecan, a whole-nut almond, or a large flat dry bean) into the dough near the bottom, where it will be concealed from view.
  20. WARNING: If you have a plastic baby, hold off! Pour the mixture into the cooled cake, pressing it in from the bottom. Plastic and ovens are not compatible
  21. Cover the formed ring with a kitchen towel and allow it to rise for another 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  22. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit for baking.
  23. Meanwhile, using a pastry brush or the back of a spoon, very gently brush the risen cakes with the egg-milk mixture until they are completely covered. Obviously, icing will take care of this
  24. still, it’s a nice finishing touch.
  25. Bake at 375 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes, checking and rotating the cake halfway through to ensure uniform browning.
  26. When the cake is golden brown and lustrous, take it from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature before icing it
  27. then place a plastic baby or feve in the bottom of the cake before frosting it again.
  28. Prior to icing

ICING AND DECORATION

  1. In a large mixing basin, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, lemon juice, and milk. Prepare the glaze by stirring it thoroughly with a whisk, big wooden spoon, or spatula to get a smooth, lustrous, rich, and pourable finish.
  2. Remove cake from oven and place it on a cooling rack over a sheet pan or a parchment-lined counter surface to collect any icing that seeps down the edges
  3. To ice the cake, use a big spoon, a ladle, or a whisk to spoon, drizzle, or smear icing all over the top and sides of the cake
  4. Colored sugars should be sprinkled on quickly in stripes or large color regions. It’s up to you whether you want it thick or thin
  5. Allow for a 15-minute setting period. Transfer to a serving tray and allow to cool before serving at room temperature.
  6. NOTES: Eat it immediately after making it, rather than storing it, and use the remaining KC to make French toast, thinly sliced and well-buttered cinnamon toast, or bread pudding.

The Times-Picayune King Cake Contest named this cake ″A Favorite,″ and a blind taste test conducted by the Washington Post named it ″BEST.″ Cinnamon and raw cane sugar sweeten Sucre’s buttery danish pastry, which is then folded with a thin layer of creole cream cheese to create the restaurant’s trademark dessert.

Gracious Bakery’s King Cake Recipe

Dough

  • 170 g bread flour, 54 g all-purpose flour, 129 g whole milk, 24 g granulated sugar, 21 g whole eggs, 4 g instant yeast, 4 g salt, 2 g malt powder, 35 g butter, cut into quarter-inch pieces
  1. Place the flours, yeast, salt, and malt in the bowl of a standing mixer and beat until well combined.
  2. Place the bowl in the bowl of a stand mixer equipped with a dough hook.
  3. Pour in the eggs and milk until everything is well-mixed.
  4. 3 minutes on Speed 1 with the mixer.
  1. Scrape the bottom of the basin.
  2. Stream in the sugar while the mixer is running.
  3. Mix on speed 1 for a couple of minutes.
  4. Stop the mixer and slowly drizzle in the butter.
  5. Now, for the next 2 minutes, mix on speed 2.
  6. Nonstick spray should be sprayed into a medium-sized mixing basin.
  1. Place the dough in a bowl and wrap it tightly with plastic wrap to keep it from drying out.
  2. Refrigerate for 12 hours/overnight to allow flavors to blend.

Filling

  • 170 grams sugar, 47 grams bread flour, 2 grams salt, 10 grams cinnamon, and 20 grams vegetable oil are used in this recipe.

Combine all of the ingredients and carefully mix them together.

Icing

  • The following ingredients: 445 grams confectioner’s sugar, 15 grams corn syrup, and 118 grams water

In a large mixing basin, thoroughly whisk together all of the icing ingredients until smooth. Make sure there are no lumps in the mixture. It is best to complete this task while the cake is baking.

Assembly

The following day, prepare a work area and roll out the dough into a 3″ by 20″ rectangle.Cinnamon sugar should be sprinkled all over the dough.Roll up from the long seam, forming a single long cylinder.Pinch the ends of the rope together.Area the king cake on a sheet pan coated with parchment paper and leave it in a warm place for 1.5 to 2 hours, covered with a dishtowel.Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bake for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, or until the cake is well browned, after the dishtowel has been removed.Remove the pan from the oven and set it aside to cool fully.Glaze the cake with frosting and decorate with purple, green, and gold decorations when it has been allowed to cool completely.
