In 2015, the song Cake by the Ocean by the Joe Jonas-led band DNCE was playing on radios all over the world, including in the United Kingdom. While the song’s words may have been puzzling to some listeners when it was first released, what else is there to this smash hit?
How did Cake by the Ocean come about?
- Joe Jonas, the vocalist of DNCE, told MTV that the band had been working with Swedish producers to put out their debut album, who had been mixing the words ″sex on the beach″ and ″cake by the ocean″ throughout the process.
- ″That’s how the song got its start,″ Jonas said to the magazine.
- ″Afterwards, it evolved into this kind of lyrically bizarre tune that sort of defines the band’s personality.
- It’s funky, it’s new, and I believe it will be something that people will like dancing to.″ The significance of the song, on the other hand, is not immediately evident.
- While the song is frequently misinterpreted as a children’s song, many people are surprised to learn the true meaning behind the lyrics, including supermodel and America’s Got Talent host Heidi Klum, who told People magazine that she ″will not tell my children″ the true meaning behind the song’s lyrics.
What’s the meaning of some of the metaphors in Cake by the Ocean?
- Throughout the song, there are several cake and general dessert analogies and imagery that lead to the underlying meaning of the song’s lyrics.
- Throughout the song, Jonas sings about what he observes in the subject of his attention, such as ″you licking frosting off your own hands / Want another taste, I’m begging, yes, ma’am,″ and ″you licking frosting off your own hands.″ This is a more extreme version of the cake metaphor, with the ″licking frosting″ conveying a pretty naive approach to sexual desire, but one that is still entertaining.
- After singing of his desire to continue with this fantasy and not wait any longer in the second verse, Jonas says: ″I’m tired of all this sugar on dry land,″ which translates as ″I’m bored of waiting any longer.″ The candy represents the pair having a good time, but the cake represents the couple being sexually serious.
What happened to DNCE?
- The band, which included Joe Jonas, fellow Jonas Brothers drummer Jack Lawless, bassist and pianist Cole Whittle, and guitarist JinJoo Lee, went on hiatus in 2016 due to personal reasons.
- In preparation for the Jonas Brothers’ reunion in 2019, DNCE is now on hiatus in order to allow both Jonas and Lawless to return to work with the Jonas Brothers.
- Since then, the Jonas Brothers have performed Cake By the Ocean as part of their live shows while on tour across the world.

Cake By The Ocean by DNCE – Songfacts
- What is ″Cake By The Ocean″ and how does it work? DNCE’s Joe Jonas provided the following explanation: ″It might refer to the real act of having sex by the beach, or it could refer to the process of eating pastries while strolling along the boardwalk. It may be anything you want it to be. We consider it to be a universal party hymn that can be used for any event.″
- The band DNCE, which is led by Joe Jonas, released their debut hit, a funk-infused groove, as their first single. Besides Lee, the group includes bassist/keyboardist Cole Whittle (who was a founding member of Semi Precious Weapons) and drummer Jack Lawless (who was a member of the Jonas Brothers’ band)
- the song was inspired by a misunderstanding between Robin Fredrikson and Mattias Larsson, who together form the Swedish production team, Mattman & Robin
- the song was written by the Jonas Brothers’ bandmate, Jack Lawless
- and the Jonas Brothers’ band As soon as Jonas overheard the two discussing their desire to have some cake by the seaside, he knew they were referring to the cocktail Sex on the Beach. ‘Love Myself’ and Selena Gomez’s ″Good For You″ songwriter Justin Tranter and producers Mattman & Robin were inspired by the title to write this song. There is cake imagery throughout the song (″See you licking frosting from your own hands″), but it isn’t until the outro that we hear about all the different types of cake that would go well by the ocean. Joe Jonas performs the following song: In my life, there is red velvet, vanilla, and chocolate. I’m ready for some funfetti, and I’ll have it every night for a while. A cake battle on the beach between bikini-clad females and Instagram comic Josh ″The Fat Jew″ Ostrovsky is featured in the song video. ″Red velvet, vanilla, and chocolate in my life,″ says the singer. It was co-directed by Joe Jonas’ girlfriend Gigi Hadid and Black Coffee, who also appeared in the video. The cake was half cake and half, like, office supplies and cleaning items, according to Cole Whittle, when asked whether it was real by Radio.com. ″The treatment looked like a wedding cake in the initial draft, and we were like, ″No, no, no.″ Joe Jonas told NME about the inspiration for the song: ″We were working with these Swedish producers at the time, and they were telling us this narrative about having cake by the sea.’″ ‘Are you people talking about sex on the beach?’ I thought to myself. They were like, ‘Yeah, that’s right.’ After experiencing writers’ block in the studio for the previous week, we composed this song with Justin Tranter in less than 10 minutes.″
- When heard in its entirety, this song is quite obscene, with Jonas throwing a total of seven F-bombs. The phrase ″go f-king crazy″ has been replaced by the phrase ″go crazy wild.″ An further well-known verse is the combination of cake and water. The song ″MacArthur Park,″ written by Jimmy Webb in 1968, is famed for its fascinating lyrics, which read: Someone had left the cake out in the rain for several hours. I don’t believe I’ll be able to handle it because it took so long to bake it, and I won’t be able to get my hands on that recipe again. Oh no, DNCE stands out from the crowd with a unique aesthetic and lyrics that are even more unique, owing in large part to their multinational crew, who did not all grow up speaking English as their first language. It was their unfettered approach to songwriting that led to the creation of this tune. According to Jonas, who spoke to Entertainment Weekly: ″We were simply making things for the sake of making them. We let ourselves to be as loose and crazy as possible with ‘Cake By The Ocean,’ and we didn’t worry too much about it adhering to the conventions of songwriting.″
- The lyric ″I’ll be Diddy, you’ll be Naomi″ is a reference to the model Naomi Campbell and the music entrepreneur Sean Combs, who has gone by the monikers ″P. Diddy″ and ″Diddy.″ P. Diddy is the stage name of Sean Combs, who is also known as ″Diddy.″ Campbell and Combs were dating in 2002, while he went by the stage name P. Diddy
- a year after the release of this song, the R&B artist Maxwell recorded a song with a similar title: ″Lake By the Ocean.″
- So, what happened to the letter ″A″ that was missing from DNCE? According to Lee, who spoke with New York radio station Z100 shortly before the song’s release, its imperfection serves as a sort of mission statement for the band, proving that you don’t have to be a professional dancer to show off your abilities.
- Nile Rodgers, the legendary guitarist and producer, passed down the opportunity to create this single. According to The Sun, he said: ″I was meant to do it, but I just wasn’t available at the time. After that, I make a joke and say something to the effect of, ″Don’t worry boys, I’ve got it next time.″ ″in addition to this, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected]

- embedding DNCE Photograph courtesy of Sarah Balch for InStyle.com What was the genesis of this project?
- Joe: I’m sorry, but I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying ″Since 2001, I’ve known Jack and JinJoo and consider them to be good friends.
We’ve toured together, and I’ve watched them perform alongside some of the world’s most talented artists.I remember when Jack and I lived together and had this crazy notion to start a band. When the time was right, we put our plans into action and formed a band called The Blackouts.I was working on some material with some Swedish producers around a year ago, and things began moving pretty rapidly after that. Then I phoned Jack and ordered him to go off tour, and I called JinJoo, who was fortunate enough to be touring with a friend of mine, Ciara, so I asked if I could borrow her guitar player. She agreed, and I stole her guitar player.
Ciara, on the other hand, was quite supportive and sent her on her way to us.It took us a long time to figure out who would be this incredible fourth member, and we needed someone with an outrageous hairstyle and tattoos who wore jumpsuits from the 1980s.We were fortunate in that we were able to locate him.″ ″Can you tell me his name?″ Cole inquires.
″Cole,″ Joe says. What is the significance of the name of the band?JinJoo (JinJoo): ″DNCE stands for dance without an A, which is a clumsy way of saying that you don’t have to be a perfect dancer in order to dance in life.
Even if life will never be perfect, you may still enjoy it to the fullest.″ Speaking of dancing, do you have any plans to go on tour soon?Joe: I’m sorry, but I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying ″We will most certainly be going on tour! Our plans for November include a short run, followed by a trip to the Jingle Ball Tour in December. We are going to be touring the country, putting on concerts, dressing up in holiday garb, and inventing new terms along the way….Ho, ho, and more ho.″ Who are your musical inspirations, and what do they sound like?Cole: I’m sorry, but I’m not sure what you’re talking about ″We’re influenced by a lot of great funk and disco artists, such as Earth, Wind & Fire and Sly and the Family Stone, as well as amazing garage rock bands and classic rock bands, such as Led Zeppelin, who have all influenced us musically.
In addition, geeky rock bands such as Weezer.″Rock bands″ is all I’m going to say for the rest of this paragraph. But, for the most part, we are drawn to groups of individuals who treat their music as a way of life, and who live in their own little world throughout the day.In this sense, it is constantly a party all the time, similar to how we are.″ ″Funky!″ exclaims JinJoo.How important do you think fashion is to you?Joe: I’m sorry, but I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying ″It has a lot to do with one’s personal style.
- As for me, I’ve always been fascinated by the frontmen of the 1970s and 1980s, from Bono to Mick Jagger to Freddie Mercury, and their willingness to break away from the conventional norm.
- As far as musicians are concerned, those would be my style idols.″ Cole: I’m sorry, but I’m not sure what you’re talking about ″Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, super heroes, and Sanford and Son are among the sources of my inspiration.
- My style has taken on the appearance of a pile of clothing on the street.
- But in a positive sense.″ Joe, your brother, Nick, has also embarked on a new professional path.
- Do you feel under strain because of his comparisons to you?
- Joe: I’m sorry, but I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying ″It is, without a doubt, really welcoming.
We’re both pleased to be able to take advantage of this second opportunity to go out and do what we loved to do years ago: perform music that we enjoy and have other people enjoy listening to us.We are a huge source of encouragement.I go to his concerts, and he goes to mine, and so forth.″ From where did the term ″Cake By The Ocean″ originate to be derived?Joe: I’m sorry, but I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying ″We were working with these Swedish producers at the time, and they were telling us this tale, and they kept mistaking ″Sex on the Beach″ with ″Cake By the Ocean,″ so we decided to use it as the basis for a song.
Because they were playing a guitar that they’d owned for more than a decade, we grabbed it and began telling stories in the studio, and it all just came together naturally.″ What are some of your favorite cake flavor combinations?Cole: I’m sorry, but I’m not sure what you’re talking about ″Whiskey is a type of alcoholic beverage.Anything with alcohol in it will be devoured by this man.″ ″I particularly enjoy red velvet,″ Joe says.
- ″I’m a huge admirer of Fudgie the Whale,″ Jack says.
- JinJoo: ″Right now, I’m really desiring anything with a coffee flavor to it.″ You can see the video for ″Cake By The Ocean″ below, and you can purchase the single for $1 from the iTunes Store by clicking here.
Joe Jonas Wants DNCE to Be the Next E Street Band
- A flash of another type of inspiration struck Joe Jonas when he was filming the Korean War drama Devotion in Savannah, Georgia, earlier this year.
- ″I felt so inspired by what a lovely city I was in and some of the music I heard while I was there,″ Jonas tells Rolling Stone.
- ″I felt so inspired by what a wonderful city I was in and some of the music I heard while I was there.″ Using Zoom, he began working on new songs with colleagues such as Ryan Tedder and Jason Evigan as well as Mike Elizondo and Mikky Ekko.
- Eventually, he had composed practically an entire album, one that he believed was appropriate for the rowdy spirit of DNCE.
- While the Jonas Brothers were momentarily on hiatus, Jonas founded DNCE, a funky dance-rock band with drummer Jack Lawless and guitarist JinJoo Lee in 2015.
- Both artists have previously performed with the Brothers on tour.
- After being introduced to bassist Cole Whittle by pop songwriter Justin Tranter (the two had previously been in the glam-pop band Semi-Precious Weapons together), the quartet went on to write a series of deliciously fun pop songs, including ″Kissing Strangers″ and ″Cake by the Ocean,″ which became a massive hit in the United Kingdom.
- Prior to the Jonas Brothers’ reunion in 2019, DNCE released an album and performed as an opener for artists such as Selena Gomez and Bruno Mars.
- The group had been placed on hold for over four years, but that has changed today.
Lawless and Lee have both returned to the roster in order to complete it.Meanwhile, they’re continuing on without Whittle, who is currently concentrating on solo material and other projects. The Jonas Brothers singer reveals that when he was back in the band, ″I used the opportunity to put a halt on everything DNCE,″ with the approval of his other bandmates.″So it turned into this thing where we all walked off and did our own thing and then began thinking about what else we wanted to do.″ Cole has been putting out some very wonderful music that is exactly up his alley, and I am a huge fan of his.″ With a modest roster shuffle and the addition of several new co-writers who are already great musicians in their own right, Jonas has been able to re-imagine what DNCE might be: a ″living, breathing″ pop music spectacle that is always developing. It’s possible that it’ll turn into something like the E Street Band, with people coming and going.″ The Storyteller, a novel by Dave Grohl, has just been completed, and he is equally motivated by the Foo Fighters bandleader’s own varied variety of collaborators, both within and outside of the band.″It may be a terrific chance to bring in some outstanding visitors, such as Ryan, who is an incredible musician.″ I can completely envision him jumping up and down on stage from time to time.
He’s a little busy at the moment, but I believe it would be a fascinating notion.″ @joejonas Please excuse me, but this is a private bathroompopmusic original sound source – joejonas Jonas has been previewing the new track on TikTok, which has already been properly credited to DNCE by several of his followers. The track ″Dancing Feet″ will be the band’s debut release following their relaunch, with the video for the song being shot this week. The song was created in partnership with Kygo, a superproducer well-known for his tropipop originals and remixes in the EDM scene.
The song serves as an excellent reintroduction, a snappy, Eighties-inspired bop that is ready to meet all of your dance-floor requirements. With their growing relationship over the previous several months, Kygo and Jonas were delighted to discover that their new song, ″Stay With Me,″ fitted well with the material already written for the band’s upcoming reunion tour.″I’m quite pleased.
When it comes to the song, he describes it as ″that sensation of not really caring what happens to you and living life to its fullest.″ Bringing joy to people is something that DNCE has always done very well, and that is exactly what I intended to accomplish with this new set of music.″ Though obviously difficult circumstances continue, it serves as a reminder to us all that we can still go out and dance while living our lives.″ While DNCE’s funkiness will still be there, Jonas says that there will be a strong psychedelic impact on the band’s forthcoming music, which will be influenced by some of his favorite groups, such as Empire of the Sun and Tame Impala, among others.Because the Jonas Brothers completed a lengthy tour of their own last year, there are currently no plans for DNCE to embark on a similar journey. However, Jonas hopes to do a number of local performances with the band when they tour in support of their new album.A future tour with Italian rockers Mneskin is something he hopes to accomplish with the band.Furthermore, in addition to introducing DNCE’s new song to the globe, he is set to make a splash later this year in Devotion, his first serious film role, in which he will feature with Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell, among others. He’s already dipping his toes into the acting pool, most notably appearing in HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones in a cameo role as himself.
(As for whether or not he’ll be back onscreen before the season is up, that remains to be seen. Then he teases, ″I can’t tell you anything, so just keep watching.″ More than all, Jonas enjoys the fact that all of these endeavors can co-exist at the same time without conflicting with one another.″When new projects presented themselves in the past with the Jonas Brothers, I used to carry a lot of trauma with me since you could only focus on one thing at a time,″ he adds.″Now, I don’t have that baggage.″ Whether it’s acting, music, or any other activity that one of them might want to pursue, the trio pledged themselves that they would not hold one another back from pursuing their own ambitions.Jonas enjoyed his time with DNCE and was always hopeful that it would continue in some form in the future: ″It has just presented itself as a more creative environment when there was no deadline on any of it.″
Why Did the Jonas Brothers Break Up? Inside Their Split and Reunion
- When the Jonas Brothers announced their breakup on October 29, 2013, it crushed the hearts of fans all across the world.
- At the time, Nick, Joe, and Kevin Jonas announced the cancellation of their tour, with a spokeswoman for the trio informing People magazine that there was ″a significant breach inside the band.″ In the years leading up to their split, the trio appeared on Disney Channel shows Camp Rock and JONAS together and produced four full-length albums: It’s About Time, Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer and Lines, Vines, and Trying Times — all of which were certified gold.
- After it looked that all hope had been gone, Nick, Joe, and Kevin surprised fans by announcing their long-awaited reappearance in February of this year.
- Since then, the New Jersey natives have gone on a number of tours and published their comeback album Happiness Begins in June of this year.
- In addition, the siblings collaborated on the Chasing Happiness documentary, in which they discussed at length about their split and what happened behind the scenes of the production.
- The most startling discovery was that Nick was the one who initiated the discussions about the band’s dissolution.
- According to the ″Jealous″ singer, ″to call it creative differences is almost too simplistic,″ he remarked on CBS’ Sunday Morning in June 2019.
- In addition, I believe that many individuals have lost interest in what we were putting out into the world.
- Basically, we were putting up shows that weren’t selling well at the time.
We were putting out music that I don’t believe any of us were very proud of, and it wasn’t related in any way.″ Nick described his interaction with Joe and Kevin as follows: ″I had a conversation with Joe and Kevin and he said…″ It was then that I remarked, ‘You know, I feel like the Jonas Brothers should be no more, and we should each embark on our own adventure.’″ And things didn’t turn out that well.… In addition, I was concerned that, you know, we — they would never talk to me again.″ After splitting up to pursue individual careers — Nick recorded two studio albums, Joe joined the boy band DNCE, and Kevin spent more time with his wife, Danielle Jonas — the lads finally reconciled and re-formed the Jonas Brothers to resume creating music together.″I believe we — I think we were absolutely meant to go through all that we went through to get to this point,″ Joe stated during the group’s appearance on CBS Sunday Morning. We’ve got a second chance, and I believe this time we’ll get it right.″I believe it was fate, or whatever you want to call it, but we’ve got a second chance, and I believe this time we’ll get it right.″ Scroll through our slideshow to learn all you need to know about the Jonas Brothers’ breakup and what led to their reunion.Do you enjoy J-14?

Get a Glimpse Inside Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’s Glamorous Provence Wedding
- It was a closely guarded secret when Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas exchanged vows in 2019 in the southern French region of the country.
- Game of Thrones—the epic HBO series that launched Turner’s career—had just concluded its last season, and the media frenzy around the young couple had reached a fever pitch as a result of this.
- The location of the event was kept a mystery.
- It was necessary to go to great measures to keep the photographers away.
- There were few and far between pictures on social media platforms.
- They were the only ones who had any actual knowledge of what was going on at the party, and they were the ones who were there.
- Turner, on the other hand, eventually felt ready to share his feelings on their second wedding anniversary.
- It all started with a single Instagram post: a picture of the actress in a lace, long-sleeved Louis Vuitton gown, heading down the aisle with her new husband in hand.
- ″2 years as your wife holy moly I love you bub,″ she said in an email to her husband.
She then followed up with a slideshow of numerous more wedding photographs, which she shared shortly after. And she went on to say: ″I mean…fuck it, it’s been two years.″ The second collection of photographs included everything from formal to informal to personal settings. An image from the wedding shows Jonas getting ready with bridesmaids in a bare-faced and exuberant manner.Another is a close-up black and white photograph of the couple doing their first dance.Another image shows a portion of their opulent cake, which is a multi-tiered confection with Baroque-inspired decoration, including a pair of gilded cherubs.
A gorgeous overhead photograph of their wedding destination, Château de Tourreau, was also shared by her. There, guests congregate in front of the property’s huge pool, soaking in the warm Provencal sunshine. In addition to being timely, the photo leak comes at a time when extravagant vacation weddings are once again in vogue.
For the last 18 months, daydreaming about a grandiose event — or even merely viewing one on social media — has seemed outdated, if not downright depressing, given the circumstances of our pandemic-era existence. When you’re in the thick of a dark and uncertain future, it might be difficult to look back on a joyful and unknowing past.
Joe Jonas’s New Band DNCE Tell Us What Their Huge Hit ‘Cake By The Ocean’ Is Really About
- In all likelihood, you’ve already heard DNCE’s massive breakthrough hit, ‘Cake By The Ocean,’ and you may be aware that the group is headed by Joe Jonas, once of the Jonas Brothers.
- But who exactly is this chart-topping four-piece, and what is it that they are all about?
- In order to find out more about DNCE, we got down with Joe and his comrades Jack Lawless and Cole Whittle (unfortunately, fourth member JinJoo Lee was trapped in bed with a tour-related illness).
- What was the process via which the band came together?
- Jack and JinJoo are friends of mine who have known each other for more than ten years.
- We’ve always discussed the possibility of forming a band together.
- In the past, we’ve come up with all kinds of band names, such as Tick and Tick and Tick.
- ″Jack Joe, C Minus, Butt Heavy…″, they say.
- ″Joe would ring me up every six months and say, ‘We’re going to do this,’″ Jack recalls.
‘Is this really happening?’ I’d think to myself.″And this time it truly happened,″ she says.″JinJoo was on the road with Charli XCX at the time, so there were some logistical issues to work out, but she said yes right away,″ Joe explains. And I met Cole through a mutual friend, Justin Tranter, with whom I was co-writing songs at the time.It was during their time in the band Semi Precious Weapons that they became friends.″ In Cole’s words, ″It feels like the four of us came together at the perfect time.″ We’re supposed to be the DNCEs of the world. The only way things could possibly be is as it is.″ I’m curious as to how you came up with the name for your band.
Of course, this is after ″Butt Heavy″ was rejected.″One night, we were all messaging each other, and someone accidentally misread the word ″dancing.″ Cole: ″We were all laughing about it.″ And, I don’t know, it was a little bit of a Eureka moment. We thought it would be appropriate since it’s flawed, and there’s something fun and imperfect about us as a group.″ What would you say is the sound of the DNCE?
The music, according to Cole, ″sounds like disco-funk classics done by a really fantastic garage band.″ Sly and the Family Stone, The Isley Brothers, and Earth, Wind, and Fire are some of our favorite funk bands to listen to.But, as rock ‘n’ roll kids, we’re also influenced by bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Jane’s Addiction, to name a few. It’s the combination of those two sounds that we’re all about.
″We have a rock ‘n’ roll mentality, yet we perform funk music in a way.″ What is the backstory of the phrase ″Cake By The Ocean″?Isn’t it true that it’s not actually about the cake?JOE: ″We were working with these Swedish producers who were telling us this tale about having cake by the water. It was really funny.″ ‘Are you people talking about sex on the beach?’ I thought to myself. They were like, ‘Yeah, that’s right.’ After experiencing writers’ block in the studio for the previous week, we composed this song with Justin Tranter in less than ten minutes. It might refer to the actual act of having sex by the beach, or it could refer to the act of eating pastries while strolling down the boardwalk.
It may be anything you want it to be.″We conceive of it as a party song that can be played at any time.″ Do you believe that the general public understands what it is all about?Joe: ″When I watch my mother singing it, I think it’s a little strange……″ Cole: ″Somewhere, a loving Grandma is probably thinking about the cake she’s going to prepare later that day, and she’s probably right.″ It’s lovely, though, since it’s also about that in some ways.″ When can we expect to hear the finished product?″Because ‘Cake By The Ocean’ has been so successful, we’ve had to postpone our next single as well as the release of the album.″ Which is a fantastic dilemma to be faced with.Even though we want to share our music with the world, having more time to add more songs and polish everything is important to us.Even on a daily basis, I still believe that we are growing as a band.″ ″We’re almost through with the record, but we’re aiming for a late-August release,″ Jack explains.
- Last but not least, what do you want DNCE to be known for?
- ″If you happen to catch us on stage, we’re rushing about like crazy people.″ Cole: Anyone attending one of our events should not be concerned about what other people think of them, what they’re wearing, or how they’re dancing.
- The nature of the band is just a genuinely carefree vision of the world, as shown via their music.
- So far, I believe we’ve drawn people from all walks of life to our events, which is the best type of audience a performer could ask for.
- DNCE’s debut EP, titled ‘Swaay,’ is now available.

What does ″Cake by the Ocean″ mean? Here’s the true meaning of DNCE’s hit song.
- The song ″Cake by the Ocean″ by DNCE was their first significant hit, and it helped launch their career.
- Everyone was singing along to the lyrics: ″Let’s lose our heads and go fucking crazy/ Ah ya ya ya I keep on thinking we’ll eat cake by the seaside.″ The song took over the radio stations and reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
- There remained, though, one question: why would anyone want to eat cake near the sea, and what does it all truly mean?
- On first hearing, the words may appear to be harmless enough, but the song is actually riddled with sexual innuendos of a dark kind.
- In a 2015 interview with MTV, Joe Jonas discussed the meaning of the lyrics to the band’s song.
- In the words of Jonas, the song was inspired by the fact that the Swedish producers with whom they were working kept misunderstanding the phrase ″sex on the beach″ with the phrase ″cake by the ocean.″ ″That’s how the song got its start,″ he explained.
- ″Afterwards, it evolved into this kind of lyrically bizarre tune that sort of defines the band’s personality.
- It’s funky, it’s new, and I believe it will be something that people will like dancing to.″ Some folks were taken completely by surprise by this development.
- Take the case of Heidi Klum, for example.
As reported in an interview with People magazine conducted at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, the model was caught surprised when it was explained to her what the lyrics truly meant.″I’m not going to tell my children that,″ she stated.Since then, cake has never been the same.
